Transactional and transformational are two types of leadership styles; each defined by specific characteristics and focuses. Transactional leadership is founded on the concept of a job well-done results in reward and appreciation versus a job not performed as expected results in disciplinary action. It is a give-and-take relationship; which does not inspire followers to perform above and beyond their job responsibilities (Fernandes & Awamleh, 2011). Currently, Mary performs these skills on a daily basis. She values feedback, encourages collaboration to resolve issues, and focuses on the “team” versus “individuals”.
In conclusion, Mary embodies both roles of leadership and followership which are vital to the success of an organization. Leadership and followership are greatly influenced by the other; weak leadership equals weak followership. Mary has the essential qualities of an effective follower such as, good judgement, good work ethic, competence, honesty, courage, discretion, loyalty, and humility.
