Leadership and followership are interrelated and cannot exist or be understood without one another. By definition, leadership is the complete opposite of followership. Both roles are vital to the success of an organization (Zogjani, Llaci, & Elmazi, 2014). Followership is the capacity to successfully follow direction, to go along with the projected plan, to be a team player, and to supply what is demanded of you (McCallum, 2013). Leadership is the process of how a person may lead a group to accomplish a shared goal and a behavior in which the person possesses characteristics to direct people and their actions in a methodical attempt (Bishop, 2013). Transactional leadership is founded on the concept of a job well-done results in reward and appreciation versus a job not performed as expected results in disciplinary action. It is a give-and-take relationship; which does not inspire followers to perform above and beyond their job responsibilities (Fernandes & Awamleh, 2011). Conversely, transformational leadership is founded on the concept of four basic traits: charisma, inspiration, self-regard, and intelligent motivation (Fernandes & Awamleh, 2011). An example of her transactional leadership is our annual evaluation and raise; all of which is dependent upon our overall accomplishments throughout the year. We are given an overall score which is translated into our increase in salary. Also, for outstanding performance in particular initiatives, we are rewarded by thank you cards, gift cards, or cafeteria tokens. As a transformational leader, she engages and motivates everyone to perform at their best and encourages creative ideas and solutions. Mary is very charismatic and inspires me to do well in all my tasks as a Quality/Patient Safety/Risk Manager. Being new to my position/role, she is an exceptional mentor and coach.
