Leadership and followership are interrelated and cannot exist or be understood without one another. By definition, leadership is the complete opposite of followership. Both roles are vital to the success of an organization (Zogjani, Llaci, & Elmazi, 2014). Followership is the capacity to successfully follow direction, to go along with the projected plan, to be a team player, and to supply what is demanded of you (McCallum, 2013). Leadership is the process of how a person may lead a group to accomplish a shared goal and a behavior in which the person possesses characteristics to direct people and their actions in a methodical attempt (Bishop, 2013). Leadership and followership are distinct roles that one person may have to perform simultaneously within their organization. The purpose of this paper is to discuss and evaluate a leader within an organization – who embodies both roles of leadership and followership, identify leadership skills that the leader needs to further develop, and discuss whether or not the leader exhibits the essential qualities of an effective follower.

...Bal, Campbell, Steed, & Meddings (2008), “leaders must exert power to achieve individual, team, and organizational goals; influence their followers to achieve greater performance; their superiors and peers to make important decisions; and stakeholders to ensure the vitality of the organization” (p.5). Currently, Mary performs these skills on a daily basis. She values feedback, encourages collaboration to resolve issues, and focuses on the “team” versus “individuals”.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Mary embodies both roles of leadership and followership which are vital to the success of an organization. Leadership and followership are greatly influenced by the other; weak leadership equals weak followership. Mary has the essential qualities of an effective follower such as, good judgement, good work ethic, competence, honesty, courage, discretion, loyalty, and humility.
