“If you think you are leading, but no one is following, you are just taking a walk” (Eikenberry). Leadership is described as “the power or ability to lead other people” (Merriam-Webster). Great leadership is a hot commodity in the world of business. Its not about whether or not you can boss people around, or have the ability to yell really loud. Leadership is about how you handle people and how they perceive you as a leader. As you read this consider if you have any of these qualities.
The values you hold will tell a lot about what kind of leader you are. Your values are what believe in or what you stand for; for example, what is right and what is wrong. These are some of the values the United States Army uphold. Loyalty is bearing true faith and allegiance is a matter of believing in and devoting yourself to something or someone. Duty means always fulfill your obligations. Respect is treating others with dignity and respect while expecting others to do the same. Selfless service is the commitment of each team member to go a little further, endure a little longer, and look a little closer to see how he or she can add to the effort. Integrity is always doing what’s right, legally and morally, even when no one is looking. Personal courage is daily standing up for and acting upon the things that you know are honorable. Honor is carrying out, acting, and living the values of respect, duty, loyalty, selfless service, integrity and personal courage in everything you do (Army Values). These are only the values the Army follows, but there are many skills that help to make a great leader.

Dwight David Eisenhower (1955), the 34th President of the United States, gave an explicit definition of leadership, “The job of getting people really wanting to do something is the essence of leadership….” The Army, like any other civilian organization, defines different levels of leadership depending on a size of a unit a leader is in command of. Tactical and organizational leaderships are two first interconnected levels of leadership in the Army. Both levels of leadership have many commonalities regarding duties and responsibilities; yet they are very different in the way the leaders develop themselves, train, and take care of their soldiers.
I strive as a leader and a person to live fully each day, laugh often and love intensely. I strive every day to have more patience, to say kinder words, to gossip less, be a good friend, good teacher, and a good mentor. In addition, I try not to be too hard on myself when I do not always succeed at those things, which is often I might add! Then I remind myself to remember that all I can do is try harder next time and learn from my mistakes and hope that my soldier see that I am imperfect and just as they are. My leadership can expect a top tier performer who strives to be one of the most competent Non-commissioned Officer’s within the unit. I will do this by adhering to the regulations, unit sop’s and any other guidance which governs my section. I will ensure my soldiers do the same, holding them to strict but attainable standards and expecting nothing less. I will teach, coach, counsel, and mentor these soldiers-teaching them what a leader is and grooming them to be leaders also.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. To me, leadership is the ability to inspire the people around you in any situation and under any circumstances, to work or live for a common purpose, and to be able to handle anything that comes your way. Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.
The contemporary leadership we researched was Situational, Distributed, and Collaborative. We researched all these because we thought that this type of prInciples would make the game more interesting for the players and leaders. I felt that with these principles we would have a chance to show how to effectively apply it, the research we did supposedly told how each principle worked and how to effectively apply it. Some other examples of the research were that what games apply to these principles the most which were for situational was capture the flag, this game was that you had to get the ball and bring it to your side, but when the opponent gets the ball from your goal. The team would have to go from attacking to defensive instantly which show that when a situation changes how a person reacts to the change, for distributed was the four squared game In which the team with the ball had to get the other team out, in this game there was a use of two principles in one collaborative and distributed as an example some people would have to mark the opponent and work together to get the person out. We used Situational, Distributed, Collaborative, we delivered collaboratively and the distributed perfectly because we worked with each other and the rest of the class to work out an outcome since our game wasn't that good and people kept asking if they could change the rules which made us think if we needed more time to execute our game , since we only had 50 mins to play . Loyalty in the Military is very important both to your country and to the men around you. As a leader in the military you should have loyalty to those below you. They should know that you would do anything for them as long as they are squared away. You as a leader should have confidence in your abilities as a leader to have inspired loyalty in your men towards you. Dedication to the missions, tasks and the organization you belong to. Motivation and more importantly self motivation is an important value. Anyone can be externally motivated but true motivation comes from within. I value those who have a fire burning inside of them to press on and succeed purely on their own. If someone demonstrates that they never quit on themselves and can motivate themselves to keep going then they are the kind of person who will never quit on you either. Lastly Pride, you should have pride in everything you do, if you don 't then it wasn 't worth doing or it wasn 't the right thing to do in the first place.
