Socrates said “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” (Socrates). If by starting out with Socrates words in mind then people go can in with a clean slate and open mind to the project ahead of them. It will also help leaders and team members alike to ask themselves how asking questions impacts the success of a project. However, asking questions alone isn’t enough; depending upon the project and your role certain questions need to be asked. Also, once the questions start flowing how leaders or a team member know that all the right questions have asked, in a sense crossing your “t” and dotting your “i”.
Impact of Questions on Success of Projects
Let’s look at how asking questions impact the success of project. By team members asking questions it says two things. First it says the team members are actually paying attention and interested. The second indicates that the team members want to do what is asked of them. Questions asked by team members helps to clarify any unknown factor, confusion over the directions, and about possible limitations that may be placed on the group. Also, questions can cause good conflict that can lead to great ideas. Even before the team starts the project, asking questions like who, what when, where, and why can help improve the success of the project. By asking the five w’s it can help eliminate obstacles and help ensure the proper supplies are ready for the team members (Clark 2013).

To achieve win-win outcomes, it is essential to separate the people from the problem. Thus, it is important to "Face the problem, not the people. The basic approach is to deal with the people as human beings and with the problem on its merits" (Fisher,Ury & Patton,1991, p.40-41).

Questioning in the planning stages empowers all team members a chance to voice their diverse opinions, which helps create a solid plat form to build your project upon (Leadership & Direction, 1997). When all team members are actively involved in the planning of the project they will be much more likely to want to achieve the goals of the leader, as they will feel like they are a significant piece of the team. When team members realize that their questions and ideas matter in formulating a successful project, they are more willing to give it their best effort.

When people think of leadership so many things rush through their heads. For example am I a leader, am I apart of a group that has a leader, and what does being a leader mean? A common definition of being a leader is a person who leads or guides a group of people. So now knowing the definition of a leader who pops into your head; Phil Jackson, Mike Krzyzewski, Martin Luther King Jr.? All of these people are great leaders, but the real question is why are they so great? One very important thing that all these men have in common is they have a philosophy of leadership. This philosophy is going to help guide these men during turbulent times, or when they need guidance themselves. Nobody is perfect and everyone needs direction no matter how wise or gifted you are. I am no different, which is why writing this philosophy of leadership is going to be a fruitful experience for years to come.
From the lessons, I have been able to understand various methods and procedures in managing a project team. My lecturer gave a brief introduction of the topics which are going to be discussed in the 2nd course “Managing the Project team”. I was excited to go through those topics as some of the terms were familiar to me.
As a project team leader with an ever growing and dynamic project base, which often has four or five projects running simultaneously, this project leader has recognized the need for an authentic leadership vision that inspires others within the organization and correlated project teams to share the vision. Establishing consensus and evaluating the implementation of a vision process will be addressed within this document along with a step by step vision implementation process where a positive vision is created and fostered within this project oriented organization. The vision implementation process will consist of: a) eliciting a sense of urgency for implementing the vision; b) developing an expert vision implementation project team, c) developing interaction strategies where feedback is valued from the entire team, d) navigate challenges through scenario planning sessions, e) modify project strategies so changes are accepted and implemented quickly, and f) document and record project progress, obstacles and lessons learned. In conclusion, there will be a summary of what success within an authentic leadership organizational vision entails.
Often, the goals and visions of the projects are not clearly discussed. The project management team doesn’t understand the needs of the organization.
Similar to understanding the context of the team, to effectively manage and understand the composition of the team it is important for the team and its members to answer the following questions: “(1) to what extent do individual team members have the technical skills required to complete the task?; (2) to what extent do they have the interpersonal and communication skills required to coordinate their work with others?; (3) to what extent are individual team members committed to the team and motivated to complete the task?; and (4) is the team the right size to successfully complete the task?” (Dyer & Dyer,
Leadership is defined as a process by which an individual influences others to obtain goals. There are three aspects that should be addressed when explaining leadership. One aspect is that leadership is a social influence process; leadership could not exist without a leader and one or more followers. Another leadership aspect is compliance; all of the leader’s directions must be complied with voluntarily. Compliance is what separates leadership from other influence-based formal authority. Finally, leadership results in the followers’ behavior, that is purposeful and goal-directed which must be in some organized setting (Leadership Theories and Studies, 2009).
This is probably one of the hardest, as a leader it is easy to do, but finding the right people and engage them in the process and continue to keep them motivated will mean in the end we will reap the risks and share in the rewards.
It is important to have the whole team involved and every team member should about the status of the project and identify there responsibility towards the project success.
