The Republic of Latvia, located in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, borders Russia to the east, the Baltic Sea to its west, south of Estonia and north of Lithuania. The capital and largest city of Latvia is Riga. The unitary state has an official language of Latvian, one of the last of the Baltic languages that has been passed down throughout generations. The climate of Latvia is temperate with the capability of some extreme cold temperatures and heavy snowfall in its winter season. With recent activity by the Russian government and its entry into the Ukraine drawing attention to the region, gaining knowledge about a country bordering Russia that I knew little about seemed advantageous.

Until the situation with Crimea is resolved, I don’t see the tension between Latvia and Russia going away. While Russia may not have officially announced any plans to annex Latvia, the likelihood of it happening is still there. As stated previously, Latvia’s location and access to the Baltic Sea make it a strategic gain for Russia. On the other hand, with so many world leaders and NATO making it known to Russia that what they have done to Crimea is not acceptable and is actually a violation of international law, they may not invade Latvia at all. The unknown is what scares Latvia, and until there is a resolution they will remain on high alert and work through the strained relationship as much as possible.
Located between the Moldovan-Ukrainian border and the River Dniester, the territory of Transnistria covers approximately 4160 km2 where over half million people live (Blakkisrud and Kolstø, 2013). In 1992, the civil conflict broke out in Transnistria (Cantir and Kennedy, 2015). When the former 14th Soviet Army interfered with the insurgent side, the Moldovans had to withdraw (Blackkisrud and Kolstø, 2013). It was thanks to Moscow that the attacks and fighting between Moldova and Transnistria were ended in July 1992 (Chamberlain-Creanga and Allin, 2010). Latvia, a country which first established its independence in 1918, was taken over by the Soviet Union in 1940 as a result of World War II, and the establishment of this new communist rule had many ramifications. The country became one of many under the rule of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and was forced to adhere to the strict rules the Soviets put in place, such as replacing the Latvian language with Russian and reprimanding those who did not comply, and eradicating Latvian culture by not allowing ethnic natives to practice their traditions (Plakans). For most of the first half of the 20th century, Venezuela was ruled by generally benevolent military strongmen, who promoted the oil industry and allowed for some social reforms. During the seventh and eighth centuries, the Swedes were merchant seamen well known for their trade. In the ninth century, Nordic Vikings raided and ravaged the European Continent as far as the Black and Caspian Seas. During the 11th and 12th centuries, Sweden slowly became a united Christian kingdom that later included Finland. Queen Margaret of Denmark united all the Nordic lands in the "Kalmar Union" in 1397. Frequent tension within the countries and within the union gradually led to open conflict between the Swedes and the Danes in the 15th century. The union's final disintegration in the early 16th century resulted in a long-lived rivalry between Norway and Denmark on one side and Sweden and Finland on the other.
