The latest technology gadget arrives just in time for Christmas. Technology’s role is taking American’s to a cloud of destruction. Over the past 15 to 20 years this nation has become further technologically advanced than the majority of other nations. This behavior made us become extremely dependent on internet communications and modern technology. The giant boxed cell phone only company executives or the rich could afford is a thing of the past. Today, the majority of people are walking around with; a cell phone, I-pad, tablet or smart phone. Daily as we pass information referencing our personal and business information without any consideration to the potential the jeopardies associated. These gadgets are unlimited allowing us to become further mobile; however the true vulnerabilities not only to ourselves; yet to friends, family and our employers’ information need to be considered. While this advancement seems prodigious the positive and negative effects of advancing in technology requires further examination prior to implementation.
The initial observation of the lady’s glasses being electronic and they provide a display of information for her to request a cab directly in front of her. Does this exhibit make a bold statement in regards to the whole world will communicate be wearing glasses? What will citizens who wear contact lenses wear to communicate? How will people use these glasses during the summer when out in the direct sunlight and prefer to wear sunglasses? Will the image be visible in the bright sunlight? Does a person risk having their eyes burnt from the glasses absorbing the sun’s rays? Additionally, what happens when somebody losses or breaks their glasses? Sadly today people are communicating vastly through e-mail and text messages than verbally talking in person when possible or over the land line telephone. Each person has a responsibility and stake in advanced technology. When it is time to upgrade any electronic device for home or the office people need to take an interest and assess the vulnerabilities against the benefits. Think before purchasing. Quick impulse buying of electronics needs to stop. Research the products prior to purchasing and don’t think someone else already did that or the company selling the product would not sell something that could cause damage to humans or the government. Then if the negative effects surpass the positive effects further research needs to happen prior to making the upgrade.
Amy Gahran, a media consultant exploring communication in the technology era, writes about how cell phones are significant. She feels that cell phones have changed our lives by providing “…vital services and human connections…offer new hope, even through simple broadcast text messages” (Gahran). Gahran is insisting that cell phones allow us to learn news quickly, connect with safety, and can even fight crime through video recordings (Gahran). In addition, she feels that the overall benefits of owning a cell phone outweigh any negatives. This somewhat challenges the ideas presented by Rosen because it points out more benefits of cell phones. In “Our Cell Phones, Ourselves” Rosen mentions that although cell phones indeed connect us with safety, they can often lead to a sense of paranoia. To expand, she writes that parents who give children a cell phone for security purposes, develop a paranoid sense of their community and lose trust in “social institutions” (Rosen). In making this comment, Rosen argues that although cell phones may be beneficial, they can change the way we view our world. Without a cell phone, many individuals feel vulnerable, as if their phone protects them from all possible dangers that they may encounter. In fact, a Rutgers University professor challenged his students to power off their phones for 48 hours and report back with their experience (Rosen). Many felt almost lost without it and one young women described the feeling “…like I was going to get raped if I didn’t have my cell phone in my hand” (Rosen). In reality, having a cell phone will not save a person’s life in all situations. It is becoming very clear that the world is becoming overpowered with electronic devices, and it is no one but the people’s fault for the privacy loss that has and will continue to happen. The amount one spends on their phone or computer a day could be described as outrageous and to some a waste of time. People wonder why privacy is becoming an issue and it is clearly because the more technical we get with technology, the more power the government has over the people. Albeit convenient, we must be willing to accept our part in its use.
Privacy is becoming rare as our society continues to become more industrialized and move towards a society hyper-focused on technology. Nicholas Carr explains this obsession with technology in his essay “Tracking Is an Assault on Liberty.” He identifies three dangers that are present in today’s internet society that are: personal data can fall into the wrong hands easily, personal information may be used to influence our behavior, and personal privacy is eroding and may lead us as a society to devalue the concept of privacy. These dangers are not only possible but they are seen in our world today.

Almost every child between the ages of eight and twelve is getting cell phones. The average home in America has as many televisions as they do people. Only 20% of American homes do not have a computer. Technology is quickly becoming a new way of life. The amount of time people spend on their devices is growing rapidly.
Devices such as smartphones have become essential - over 1 billion smart phones were sold worldwide last year (Zeman, 2014). However, our reliance on technology has its pitfalls, and we are also more vulnerable, often in ways we do not know or understand. If we are to maintain our security we need to find ways to do this that fit in with our lifestyles. We can change behaviours, by education and training, but ideally we should design in security from the ground up, rather than adding it on, or trying to force actions that people simply won’t follow because they find them irritating or think they’re simply not important. Security should be something that just happens.
Everywhere I turn, I see someone on a cell phone, either talking or texting. Every car next to me in traffic has a GPS on the dashboard, including my own. It seems that everyone needs some help from technology on a daily basis. It both surrounds and intrigues us. Technology can be helpful, fun, and entertaining. Much of technology is created to assist with making projects faster or daily tasks more efficient. However, the collaboration of technologies in our lives has a few negative effects and I think we need to scale back a bit on our use of these much adored technologies.
