Shakespeare manipulates the audience’s opinions on whom was most responsible for the death of Duncan in many ways, I feel he does this to create question and surprise to the play. Shakespeare leads you along one path of thought, to then divert your thoughts onto another. Many people have different opinions and interpretations to this play; A.C Bradley once wrote “Lady Macbeth is the most commanding and perhaps the most awe-inspiring figure that Shakespeare drew. Sharing, as we have seen, certain traits with her husband she is at once clearly distinguished from him by an inflexibility of will, which appears to hold imagination, feeling, and conscience completely in check. To her the prophecy of things that will be becomes instantaneously the determination that they shall be:
‘Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt be
That thou art promised’.
She knows her husband's weakness, how he scruples 'to catch the nearest way' to the object he desires; and she sets herself without a trace of doubt or conflict to counteract this weakness.”
In his book Shakespearean Tragedy he explores this first thought into more detail and to how he believes Shakespeare manipulates the audience’s opinions.
In my own opinion Shakespeare manipulates our train of thoughts like Lady Macbeth did to Macbeth in the play. Lady Macbeth is probably one of the most influential characters in all of Shakespeare’s plays. Its appearance vs. reality throughout the play; the way Shakespeare goes against the context of 17th century Britain. In 17th century Britain things were much different than things are today; women had few rights and people then. When Lady Macbeth first reads the letter sent by Macbeth she instantly knows what she has to do but she knows her husband is a coward and that he “is too full o’the milk of human-kindness” and so she takes it upon herself to try and get him to do kill King Duncan because “Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt be that thou art promised’.” Once she set her aims/ambition high she knows in some way she can reach it, it also shows where her position in the relationship is. It shows that she is forcing/ordering Macbeth to be what she and the witches want him to be, which also says she is in touch with the supernatural side. Now we can see how manipulate this woman can be because she manipulates her husband into killing a king, which is treachery and could resolve in Macbeth being killed.

The play Macbeth contains many hallucinations. The hallucinations in the play were trying to make the characters realize the things they were doing was wrong. It is making them conscious of their miss doings. I believe this story is to teach people that they should do the right things at all time because if not there conscious will hunt them down. Throughout the play Macbeth there is a couple of characters hallucinating about so many scenes going on in this play. Here are the things they hallucinate about in this play. Macbeth sees a dagger, Macbeth imagines a voice that warns him “Macbeth shall sleep no more,” (2.2.35-36) and he imagines that the sleepers could see him listening to their exclamation of fear, Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo, the three apparitions from the witches, and Lady Macbeth sees blood on her hands. I am going to talk about the many of hallucinations that were in the play.
The play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, explores the darkest corners of the human psyche. It artfully takes its audience to a place that allows one to examine what a human being is truly capable of once tempted by the allure of power. In the play, Scottish noble Macbeth and his wife inevitably fall prey to their own self corruption. Initiated by prophesies made by three mysterious witches, the Macbeths set their sights on the throne. When the curtains open on the plot to murder King Duncan, Lady Macbeth is the driving force. Her criminal mind and desire for ruthlessness have led many a critic to define her as evil. Closer examination, however, reveals that she is a multifaceted character; other sides to her persona include: genuine good will towards her husband, coy manipulation, and feminine tenderness.
We are first introduced to Lady Macbeth at the beginning of Act 1, scene 5, through the letter that Macbeth sends her. This shows her to be his, ‘dearest partner of greatness’ and that he has no secrets from her. The witches’ prophecies intensify her ambitions for her husband, to be the King of Scotland. Lady Macbeth is the one who encourages him to kill the king and she not only encourages him, she makes all the plans herself. We see how clever she is and how she understands her husband well, she knows he has great ambitions, but she also knows that he is honourable and mentally weak:
Lady Macbeth is a very loving wife to Macbeth and she wants to do anything she can for him to achieve his goals. She just takes it a little too far, and she puts too much pressure on Macbeth to commit crimes that he is not sure he wants to do. After Macbeth sends her a letter about the witches’ premonitions, Lady Macbeth is no longer the sweet innocent lady we expect her to be. She turns into a person who is just as ambitious as her husband and she wants to do whatever it takes to help him get Duncan out of the way. She even goes to the point of calling Macbeth a coward, and mocking his bravery when he fails to complete the job. She is even willing to do it herself (plant the bloody knife with the guard). Lady Macbeth is constantly putting the pressure on Macbeth to do things that he is not sure about. She almost turns into a bully who dares Macbeth to go out and do evil things. She even says in a soliloquy that she wants to be released of all her morals and values so that she can help him commit these crimes.
Lady Macbeth’s atypical and complex character directly challenged the archetypal principles and beliefs of the Jacobean era which as a result, drew major fascination through the ages. Lady Macbeth was Shakespeare’s device to not only stimulate audience’s emotions, but to also provide historical context and elicit dominant themes which reflected Jacobean society. Her ambiguous character and remarkable influences in the play raised a lot of controversy and fascination amongst both modern and Jacobean audiences. She can either be seen as linked to the witches in a feminist bid to overthrow the balance of power, or as a representation of the evil side of Macbeth. Nevertheless, it was her distinct characteristics and actions which ultimately catalysed the chain of conflicts of the play. Again, this reinforces her important role in the play.
The two scenes that the essay will be focusing on are Act 1 Scene 1
Throughout Macbeth, Shakespeare dramatically shows what can happen when our common gender roles are broken. He shows the power that people can have over others when they aren’t acting the way they’re expected to.
Lady Macbeth was a small but very important part of the play Macbeth. She is always on the side of Macbeth telling him what she thinks he should do. When Macbeth was off at war, and told lady Macbeth that the witches greeted him as Thane of Cawdor, and King of Scotland before he received those titles, she was probably scheming no how to fulfill those before he returned home. Once home, they had King Duncan stay at Dunsinane. Lady Macbeth then b-tches at her husband and ridicules his masculinity in order to make him commit murder (Friedlander). Macbeth reluctantly murders Duncan, even though he wanted to wait and have it all play out without killing anyone. When he went to the well to wash off his hands he speaks of his remorse, and lady Macbeth finds out that he did not implicate the guards, so she tells him to go do it. But he wont, so she insults him more, and goes to do it herself.

In this soliloquy, Lady Macbeth comments on her thoughts after having read a letter from her husband, Macbeth, informing her about the witches' prophecies on the possibility of Kingship. A variety of well-known topics are explored, including the revelation of the true traits of characters such as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. "Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt be What thou art promised; yet do I fear thy nature, It is too full o'th'milk of human kindness To catch the nearest way. Thou wouldst be great, Art not without ambition, but without The illness should attend it. What thou wouldst highly, That wouldst thou holily; wouldst not play false, And yet wouldst strongly win. Thou'dst have, great Glamis, That which cries, 'Thus who must do' if thou have it; And that which rather thou dost fear to do. Than wishest should be undone. Hie thee hither, That I may pour my spirits in thine ear And chastise with the valour of my tongue All that impedes thee from the golden round, Which fate and metaphysical aid doth seem To have crowned thee withal." -Lady Macbeth, Act 1 Sc5, Lines 13 -- 28 Her first thoughts are based on the reaction of the realism of Macbeth being Thane of Glamis, and possibly Cawdor as the witches predicted. This is expressed through the words "What thou art promised". The idea of having soliloquy interacting with the witches' predictions creates a sense of spirituality. This being Lady Macbeth's first appearance in the play is effective as it allows the reader to associate this sense of spirituality and evil with her character, that has yet to have any substance to allow the reader to interpret her role by. She continues by expressing her fear over not being able to "catch the nearest way" due to Macbeth's overly kind character. This is demonstrated through a variety of techniques. For example, Lady Macbeth explains how her husband would 'not play false' nor would he 'wrongly win'. This suggests a fair person with a kindness too powerful for him to be a false king, through murder. The extent of Macbeth's kind character is described as "too full o'th'milk of human kindness".

This is cleverly portrayed by Shakespeare as women in that era were regarded as inferior in the mind, will and body. Alternatively, men were superior yet Lady Macbeth was able to take control and overrule Macbeth. This is how Lady Macbeth’s character became so cold and calculating. Her role was vital, as Macbeth is tempted to perform evil deeds, Lady Macbeth is the key human agent, the one who Macbeth loves and trusts the most. Lady Macbeth can use this to her advantage to ensure the temptation is completed. I believe Shakespeare was a very accomplished writer and storyteller. The language Shakespeare uses clearly reflects Lady Macbeth’s character and personality. This creates clear impressions in your mind.

In Shakespeare's Macbeth, the focus that is placed on the character of Lady Macbeth helps to convey the play's theme of the strife created by the struggle for power and control that is present throughout the entire work. Shakespeare presents her character in great detail and shows her to be a dominating, authoritative woman who thrives on the power she holds over her husband. He then shows the principle character, Macbeth, rise up and join his wife in a struggle for power of his own. It is the actions that Macbeth takes in attempt to achieve ultimate authority that lead to his downfall, and it is Lady Macbeth's loss of control over her husband as he gains this independence which causes her own weakening and eventually leads to her demise as well.
