The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has a website that announces its programs. Anyone can easily find and choose a concert. I chose a concert for Sunday July 25, 2010. This concert was emerging artists from Ipalpiti Festibal 2010. It included the four pieces of music that are described below. One of these was Fantasiestucke, Opus 88, both Romanze and Duet were preformed. This concerto was performed by pianist Luiza Borac, violinist Vladimir Dyo, and cellist Yves Dharamraj. The second piece was Ahnung, a new discovery piece from Kinderszenen. This piece was U.S. Premiere, played solo by the pianist Luiza Borac. The third piece was Piano Quartet in E-flat major, Opus 47. This piece was an Andante cantabile piece. This concerto was performed by pianist Luiza Borac, violinist Conrad Chow and Adelya Shagidullina, and Cellist Kian Soltani. The last piece was Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Opus 44. What I discovered about my own musical understanding by attending this concert is the following thing. I know how to appreciate and to enjoy music that is a little bit familiar, but my understanding stops when a very new type of music is performed. I made a conclusion from this experience. My conclusion is that learning about music will increase the pleasure of listening to music, but that musical learning is not, perhaps, as easy as learning subjects like Math or History. I will begin my description of the music that I heard at the LACMA concert with the work that I liked best. This was the new discovery from Kinderszenen’s Ahnung, the composer of this piece was Robert Schumann, U.S. Premiere performed by the pianist Luiza Borac. This piece was first beginning with the repeating chords accompanied with the soft moderato me... ... middle of paper ... ...xcited to have this experience. Part of the drama of the concert at first is felt when the musicians come in and sit down and begin tuning up their instruments. I would not be able to comment on the performance of the orchestra. During the performance, I seen the audience were moving with the music, but I felt like that everyone seems knows more music than what I learned throughout this semester. After I went home and did some of the research on these music I finally understand why these people like to attend the orchestra concerto, it was because that every piece of music has a history behind it. The Los Angeles audience seemed to me to be people who know music and who will listen to something new in a respectful way. All the same, when the more familiar sounds of the last piece were heard, I could feel a little sense of relaxation and fun coming into the room.
Overall I truly enjoyed myself at the opera. It gave me a new perception on plays and operas, before I went I thought it would be cut and dry and I would be ready to leave as soon as I got there, but it was the complete opposite of that. I laughed, I wanted to cry (but I didn’t), and I felt the energy from the stage. I did recommend this opera to some of my friends and I will recommend it to more people because it was really, really good. All of the music was well executed and performed beautifully. I can see myself checking out more operas and plays here at USC, they are really good way to spend an evening enjoying classical music and a good show.
Overall, this concert was worth going to. The orchestra played very well and it displayed two amazing artists from different regions of the spectrum coming together to make this concert stupendous. I would definitely like to hear more of Gerard Schwarz’s conducting and Ms. Astanova’s piano playing. I will be coming back to the symphony to hear more.
I was impressed by the range of the pieces that were performed as they were from 18th century classical symphony arrangements to contemporary techno pieces. However, the pieces that moved me most were Mozart’s Molto Allegro, Oaken Sky by Chris Rogerson and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. In hindsight, I am surprised that the two pieces from the Classical Era had such an impact on me. Perhaps, “classical” pieces were what I expected to hear at a Symphony. Oaken Sky evoked the most imagery for me and the conductor’s introduction of the piece was perhaps partly responsible for my ability to go from the earth to the sky in my mind’s eye. Oaken Sky was definitely a pleasant surprise and very pleasing to all of my senses. I was fully engaged in body, mind and soul with Rogerson’s composition. Cielito Lindo was interesting and the soloist really enhanced the piece with a stellar performance. Warehouse Medicine caused an incongruent stirring in me; perhaps I was not prepared for electronics to be added to the symphony. Ravel’s composition, Le Tombeau de Couperin, was a moving piece, but did not engage my senses, only my intellect. This work essentially left me feeling confused and although I appreciated the description of the dedication of the work by the composer, this was my least favorite piece. The “CPCC” soloist, Juan Caljero’s, rendition of Cileito Lindo was mesmerizing. Charlotte
The performance I attended was on campus at Estrella Mountain Community College. The Phoenix Symphony's performance was held February 18th in the Estrella Conference Center. Performers were dressed in essentially matching, clean-cut, black outfits. Chairs for the listeners were placed in neat rows leaving an isle down the center of the room in which the conductor, Marc Dix, walked occasionally. The orchestra was arranged in a "U" shape so the instruments all turned in towards each other. From the audiences' point of view, violins were on the far left, violas, to their right, cellos to their right, and on the far right side stood the double basses. The 1st violinist sat in the second to last chair to the left, and among all this, the concert master stood in the center.
...duction that I attended on the night of February 17th was not my first experience with classical music, it was however the first symphony production greatly enriched by the knowledge that I have picked up as a result of the class Music 100. Although my family has a deep appreciation for classical music, and mine is just beginning, the Seattle Symphony production certainly brought many of the musical ideas and terms such as texture and clarity to life. The three works featured February 17th, Johannes Brahms' Tragic Overture, Edward Elgar's cello in E-minor, and Sergey Prokofiev's Symphony Number 6 in E-flat minor were new music that I have not been exposed to. Also the treat of hearing the work of world renounced guest cellist, Antonio Meneses was without doubt a treat. I much enjoyed this Seattle Symphony production and would like to attend another in the future.
The Laidlaw Preforming Arts Center held a Wind Ensemble for the students of South Alabama. In this program there were a various Romantic style pieces which are listed on the program stapled to the back of this paper. Each piece of music shows a series of different styles, and the student band does so well with each. As the concert is coming to the end student conductors begin to conduct the pieces, and they all do a wonderful job.
All of the concerts I went to were good. The concerts allowed me to broaden my knowledge of music and learn more about how chamber music sounds. I moved along with the music I heard, and I thought about the works as I listened to them. I saw the musicians move as they played, and I know most musicians think about how they are going to play. Classical music may be losing the younger audiences, but it is still as great as it used to be when these pieces where played for royalty. Thought and movement are reactions to classical music which is why it’s an art form, and we should continue to support it because it is growing as composers write new pieces for the modern day instruments.
The second piece, Paratum Cor Meum, was a much shorter piece with very few lyrics. It was interesting to hear a piece by Haydn, since we had discussed this composer in class. I was impressed by the choir members’ ability to remember words in another language, and I enjoyed the sounds of the piano accompaniment.
The first piece, 7 Variations on “Bei Mannern, welche Liebe fuhlen”, WoO 46, by Ludwig van Beethoven, is unlike any other piece I heard at a concert. It is a continuous movement, a flow of sound and harmonical transitions from variation to variation. The original melody is smooth, slow, a little bit funny, and varies in its tempo. I attended the Los Angeles Philharmonic classical music concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on Friday 29 November 2013. The classical concert started at 8:00pm to the enjoyment of the huge audience that had been waiting for this amazing music extravaganza. Classical music concerts always offer magnificent entertainment and the audience in this concert was expectant to derive such entertainment or more. In attendance were Christian Zacharias who was the conductor and Martin Chalifour who was the LA Phil commanding Principal Concertmaster and Bach violin player. In readiness for the concert, I enjoyed a special dinner prepared for the audience. More specifically, LA Phil staffer introduced us to the evening classical concert amidst cheers from the audience. It was such a refreshing and joyous feeling to be part of this audience.
The wisdom one gain about music history cannot be measure. I was intrigue for the fact that the program included a brief note about each composer and special requests to the audiences. Most of the requests encompassed a series of etiquette guidelines to educate the audience. For instance, one needed to avoid things that may distract the performances. One need to avoid doing anything that creates noise or distracts the pianist and the audience during the performance, including talking, whispering, and cell phone texting. One can be appreciated of the fact that Mr. Attesti gave a brief explanation of each composer and their compositions. For my project, I chose to create a short, 30 minute concert for elementary-age children in their after-care program at school. Including my string quartet that I regularly perform with, I will allow kids to experience music in a way they may never be able to outside of this program. Through mixed media slides, videos, live performances of famous classical and contemporary music, and engaging activities, these children will hopefully gain a foundational understanding of the importance of classical music and enter into a world of music they have never before. I am extremely excited to create this program, and hope to see positive results from my planning and performing.
Music: the art of organized noise. The blend of pitch and rhythm combined in different mediums and enjoyed by our ears. A very interpretive art, music isn’t very clearly constricted or defined by one definition. With so many varieties of music, it’s difficult to say what aspect is really the most important. Some people think music’s history and the appreciation of music are the most important aspects to take into consideration. Some think complex in rhythms and melodies make the best music. Some people devote their whole lives to studying one genre of music in order to fully understand how that genre works. While all of these aspects of music are important, none of them can truly be compared with each other on a fair playing field. Music of different genres, eras, and geographic backgrounds were written for different purposes, different people, and different settings. Still, there is still one overarching theme that applies to all forms of music new or old: the way the composer presents his or her creation. The performance and presentation of a work of music is like the icing on the top of a cake. The cake may be the best you’ve ever tasted, but if the icing on the outside doesn’t look appealing or doesn’t taste good, chances are you’ll take a different piece of cake with better looking frosting next time. The performance of music is what appeals most to people. With live performance, an artist must “sell” his or her creation. They must put smile on their face and convey to the audience that this is their music and through the music explain why it’s awesome. On Saturday, September 24, 2016, at 8 pm, I attended the Bach & Beethoven concert performed by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and conducted by Jeffrey Kahane, music director. This event took place at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, California. The duration of the program was about 1 hour and 30 minutes. This was a very special night for me because it was my first time going to a classical music concert. I have heard music like this at weddings, movies, elevators, Cadillac commercials, or scanning through the radio stations in my car. But never have I been present in an auditorium filled with people gathering together for this reason, classical music. As I entered the theatre, I noticed everyone was formally dressed. The orchestra were all dressed in black. The lights were dim and set the mood for a relaxing night.
