Well i believe they should be, but only in the public sector and not in the private sector. Labor union are a thing of the past, more primarily the 20 century. Let face it, the economy is shift towards white collar jobs. Blue collar jobs are die due to machines. Thier jobs can be replace, but with a skill worker his job is protect. With the public sector run their business quite differently compared to the private sector. With employees of the public sector, wage are paid through tax. Unionism can be described as "a continuous association of wage-earners for the purpose of maintaining or improving the conditions of their employment"(Smelser). This means that a group of workers can unite to gain more power and leverage in bargaining. The bargaining may include many aspects but usually consists of wages, benefits, terms and conditions of employment. The notion of union came about in the 1700's. In the beginning as it is today workers united to "defend the autonomy and dignity of the craftsman against the growing power of the company" (Montgomery).
The history of capitalism is replete with examples of the need for labor unions, however in industries where labor unions were powerful, they helped to cause the decline of U.S. dominance. Labor unions’ principal objectives are to increase wages, shorten work days, achieve greater benefits, and improve working conditions. Despite these goals, the early years of union formation were characterized by difficulties (Hunter).
Labor unions were established as a way for workers’ needs and grievances to be heard by management. According to Fossum (2012), “forming a union creates a collective voice to influence change at work” (p. 7). The collective voice of workers in a union holds much more power than any single employee’s voice. It can loudly draw attention to mistreatment or abuse of workers. The organized collective voice of workers demands to be treated in a fair way by its management in terms of wages, hours, benefits, and working conditions.
The disadvantages of union membership are viewed from the employee and employer perspective. Through the employee lens, the disadvantages manifest in the form of fees, loss of autonomy, and less collaborative work environment. As part of the union, you surrender many of your individual rights in exchange for the organized results that can potentially manifest through the collective bargaining process. Therefore, there isn’t any assurance that your individual concern will even be addressed.

At this point in time, our company is non-union and believes the disadvantages of unionization to be greater than those benefits which may come from it. Many of the benefits which are supposed to come from unionization are canceled by various disadvantages. Additionally there are several, negative effects brought on by joining labor unions which should make any employee think long and hard before they begin the process of joining a union.

Trade unions exist because an individual worker has very little power to influence decisions that are made about his or her job. By joining together with other workers, there is more chance of having a voice and influence. However, throughout last twenty years there has been much debate over the impact of trade unions on productivity. Trade unions have been defined by two faces, as outlined by Freeman and Medoff in What Do Unions Do? As the basis of much of the literature surrounding unions has stemmed from this, I would discuss it in detail in the following paragraphs.
