In the play King Lear by William Shakespeare the characters in the play show many different symptoms and forms of madness. Madness is the state of being mentally ill, examples of madness are insanity, foolishness, idiocy and many more. Three characters in King Lear show symptoms of some madness; King Lear portrays true insanity, Edmund 's madness allows evil and manipulation, while the Fools form of madness is used to hide truths that need to be told. Lear needs to feel a sense of closure and he is trying to fill a void in him that he thinks Poor Tom can, Lear believes that by having someone who is going through the same type of madness and situation he would not be alone and he would have someone he can relate with. Lear brings Poor Tom with him as his personal Philosopher. Additionally, Lear holds an imaginary court trial against his two daughters Regan and Goneril “I 'll see their trial first. Bring in their evidence.” (3.6.36) Lear tries to restore order and sanity back in his life but does it in an insane way like the imaginary trial. He is the rejected illegitimate son of Gloucester, who only cares for his own blood-son Edgar. Edmund, in the beginning of Act 1, casts an illusion that his stepbrother Edgar is trying to kill their father. “If our father would sleep till I waked him, you should enjoy half his revenue for ever, and live the beloved of your brother.” (1.2.52-4) Edmund writes a letter to himself forging his brother 's signature to make it seem like it came from Edger. Edmund reveals the letter to their father Gloucester causing him to get angry at Edgar. Edmund also convinces Edgar to flee the kingdom because their father is angry at him “My father watches. O sir, fly this place! / Intelligence is given where you are hid”(2.1.20-1). Edmund is trying to cast an illusion of being the good loyal son, while in reality he is trying to take over their father 's wealth. Edmund is the evil son. In addition, Edmund shows his true form of evil madness when he betrays his own father and tells Cornwall about the letter Gloucester gave him to hide, the letter that proves Gloucester 's allegiance to King Lear and the invasion of the French army. “How malicious is my fortune that I must represent / to be just! Throughout Shakespeare?s play, Hamlet, the main character, young Hamlet, is faced with the responsibility of attaining vengeance for his father?s murder. He decides to feign madness as part of his plan to gain the opportunity to kill Claudius. As the play progresses, his depiction of a madman becomes increasingly believable, and the characters around him react accordingly. However, through his inner thoughts and the apparent reasons for his actions, it is clear that he is not really mad and is simply an actor simulating insanity in order to fulfill his duty to his father.
An insane person is one that demonstrates foolish acts because of their poor mental state. In the beginning of Macbeth, Macbeth is characterized as a brave soldier. His bravery on the battlefield earned him the titles of Thane of Cawdor and Glamis. The play leads the reader to believe that Macbeth is sane, but when he receives prophesy from the witches that he will be king, an insane character emerges from within. Macbeth demonstrates these characteristics when he claims to see a floating dagger and an illusionary ghost and also becomes obsessed with the idea of killing others, and not being completely human.
Lear banishes the Earl of Kent whilst the latter is in the process of protecting the relationship between Cordelia and Lear (7). Due to his love for King Lear, Kent disguises himself as a servant in order to protect and serve him (18). When Lear dies, Kent indicates to Albany that he has “a journey [...] shortly to go;/[his] master calls [him, and he] must not say no” (118). Despite the fact that Lear is dead, Kent still continues his facade as a loyal servant, and he would rather die than live without Lear. Another character who turns to madness is Edgar, who at the beginning of the play is naive and does not realize other’s deceit, however, upon realising other’s deceit, he becomes a different person — he becomes Tom o’Bedlam, a beggar (42). He chooses to descend into madness as Tom in order to warn his father and godfather, whom he loves and cares for, about the facetiousness of Edmund, Goneril and Regan. Edgar’s choice for a descent into madness is a strong parallel to Lear, who falls victim to it. Lear is the preeminent character who’s love leads to madness. Lear, whilst talking to the fool, confesses that he did Cordelia wrong and regrets acting as an extremely harsh father to her (29-30). Lear, upon feeling betrayal from his oldest daughters, tells himself to stop feeling heartache since that is what will impel his madness. Lear, later, mentions that Tom o’Bedlam “wert better in [his] grave than to answer with [his] uncovered body” whilst it is pouring rain, but then Lear asks himself if there were “any a man more than that” and begins to disrobe to clothe the homeless, poor Tom

What stings Lear even more is that he is now completely dependent upon his two shameless daughters, Goneril and Regan. Plus that he must now beg them when he took care of them like a father when they were once children, to drive Lears further into madness he realizes that as king he was so ignorant and blind with power that he never took care of the homeless and let them suffer. Edmund, the bastard son of Gloucester is not pleased with his status as a bastard. Edgar the legitimate son of Gloucester stands to obtain the lands, wealth and power of his father. Edmund thinks this is unfair and begins a plot to banish his brother and obtain the lands of his father. Through the use of insanity as a metaphor, William Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe, William Blake, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, introduced us to characters and stories that illustrate the path to insanity from the creation of a weakened psychological state that renders the victim susceptible to bouts of madness, the internalization of stimuli that has permeated the human psyche resulting in the chasm between rational and irrational thought, and the consequences of the effects of the psychological stress of external stimuli demonstrated through the actions of their characters.
A connection that is lost would include Lear’s relationship between him and his three daughters. If Lear’s lack of communication were to be put aside, then Lear could then understand and know his daughters each on a personal level. Thus, allowing him to realize that Cordelia is the most loyal and loving daughter of all. Whereas, he would recognize Goneril and Regan to be his two ungrateful daughters, who are known to be fake backstabbers that are capable and willing enough to get that they want. Secondly, with Lear’s deficient sense of communication, it has allowed him to gain the persona of haste irrationalism. The quickest take over of madness is exhibited in Hamlet’s love interest, Ophelia. The most important example of madness is shown in Hamlet after his meeting with the Ghost and his plot for revenge upon his uncle. The most unexpected example of madness is in Laertes who in a fit of rage loses all gentleman like qualities and almost upsets the kingdom. All of these characters add up to the idea that to lose someone a person cares about dearly, ultimately ends in losing one’s composure and going mad. If we take away anything from Shakespeare’s play, it should be that each of us should think over our decisions prior to making them to insure we don’t have the same fate as the characters stated
In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the main character, Hamlet, is often perceived by the other characters in the play as being mentally unbalanced because he acts in ways that drive them to think he is mad. Hamlet may very well be psychotic; however, there are times when he “feigns insanity” in order to unearth the truth surrounding his father's death. This plan seems to be going well until Hamlet's mental state slowly begins to deteriorate. What began as an act of insanity or antic disposition transitions from an act to a tragic reality. After studying Hamlet's actions, one will notice that as the play progresses, his feigned insanity becomes less and less intentional and devolves into true mental illness.

In William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, one of the most evident and important themes is the theme of madness. The theme is apparent throughout the play, mainly through the actions and thoughts of Hamlet, Ophelia, and Laertes. Madness is defined as the quality or condition of mental illness or derangement (being insane). Madness is at the center of the conflicts and problems of the play and is conveyed through Shakespeare’s elaborate use of manipulation and parallels between Hamlet, Ophelia, and Laertes to contribute to Hamlet’s tragic character. Edmund lusted for all of his father’s power, lying to his gullible brother and father aided him in his plan for total authority along with destroying their lives. As bastard son of Gloucester, Edmund wanted to receive all of the power destined for his brother, Edgar, who was Gloucester’s legitimate son. Edmund stated his disapproval of his brother, “Wherefore should I/ Stand in the plague of custom, and permit/ The curiosity of nations to deprive me/ For that I am some twelve or fourteen moonshines/ Lag of a brother? Why bastard?”(1.2.2-6). Edmund wanted the respect and love that Edgar received even though he was Gloucester’s bastard son. He claimed that he was not much younger or “moonshines lag of a brother” therefore he should be considered just as smart and able-minded as any legitimate son. He built up hatred toward Edgar and in order to get rid of him he convinced his father that Edgar had betrayed him through a letter.
