The major issues affected by power and politics in an organization are the output and productivity of employees. Positive power and politics foresees the implementation of strategies that increase the output of employees and they can include the development of dogmas and chains of commands that employees can comprehend and implement easily. According to Clegg et al (2006), the management plays a significant role in promoting positive power and politics in an organization since they are responsible of developing the policies that employee’s should adopt in the organization. The managers have the sole responsibility of creating political cultures that are in line with the employees’ interests. The politics created should promote the growth of the organization rather than cripple employee’s efforts and input in the organization (Dutt, 2009). The human resource managers can develop clear, defendable promotion and recruitment processes. Doing so will ensure that all employees working in the organization are treated fairly and are given equal opportunities to prove their viability in their different posts (Clegg et al, 2006). The facts of BP Oil, as set out in the judgment: 1. The principal (P) in this case is BP Oil, who hired the oil tanker ‘Target’ from her owners, Target Shipping. The issue is whether BP is entitled to recover some $1 million that Target Shipping charged them by way of overage freight and which, as BP claim, they paid by mistake. A1 would be Mr Andrew Finlinson, working for BP as a trader, who handled the charter of the oil tanker. A2 would be Mr Rickwood and/or Ms Myers, who authorised payment of Target Shipping’s freight invoice as part of BP's Demurrage Department.

It is not about “what you do”, “it is about who you are and who you know”. As employees, we have all heard sayings like this before when it comes to the business world. The “power and politic” mindset is a direct result of the type of tug of war experienced for millions of years; from prehistoric times through modern day. Ever since Ugha smashed Mugha in the head with a club back in prehistoric times, politics have been around in the workplace. Politics are a subliminal fight for survival and it actually happens in personal lives as much as it does in our work lives. Politics can go hand in hand with power, just as night follows the day. Many of the political situations that occur within a corporation are a result of growth and change. However, part of the task of becoming a viable asset to a corporation is to look beyond the surface and find out where the company is heading as a result of these changes. In this way, employees can position themselves to be a positive part of the growth and change.
In today’s environment of companies doing business in a global economy, teamwork is essential. “Employees working in effective teams help increase productivity, employee involvement, and contribution, while reducing costs and flattening organizational structure (Adams, 2003). It needs to be carefully hired, deserve an extra effort to retain it and requires training & development to upgrade and improve its capabilities. Other resources depreciate with the passage of time but when the human resource gains more and more experience, it becomes more beneficial for the organizations.
