Imagine growing up and having to deal with strange looks all the time because it is difficult to hear. Often being ignored by parents because they do not understand the situation, or anyone for that matter. Imagine living in a wheelchair at the hospital for a small portion of life. Having an adversity throughout the majority of life is not something many people would take very lightly. However, there are some people who do not want this burden to take over their lives. Kathy Buckley is a powerful woman who has triumphed over many calamities such as being deaf, being run over, and having cancer all before the age of thirty.
Kathy was born in a relatively small town by the name of Wickliffe, Ohio. At a very young age, her family began to notice that something was wrong. Kathy had an inability to communicate. As a child, Kathy remembers attempting to play with other children, which was often difficult (Buckley). “By the time I’d hear someone say ‘hey Kathy, come and get us’ the game would be over,” she said (Buckley). Originally, her parents concluded that she was slow. However, it wasn’t until the 2nd grade that school administrators, psychologist, and audiologist determined that it was just a case of hearing loss. Having hearing loss affects your ability to speak correctly. When she discovered that she had a hearing loss, she had to begin wearing a hearing aid. Unfortunately, her hearing aid did more bad than good. The hearing aid she would wear was loud and painful to the point that it would bring her to tears (Buckley). While at school, her teachers did not give her the proper attention that someone with a disability should receive. She soon decided to transfer to a school that was specifically for her needs. Although both his parents could sign, he was raised without learning how to because his doctors told his parents and grandparents that they were afraid signing would interfere with his speech and interfere with his learning and education because he would no longer try and use his speech and hearing skills. Mark talks about his struggles faced while attending different schools and just not being able to understand people because all he can do is read lips which was especially difficult when he wasn’t familiar with the movement and pattern of the person’s lips. He also talks about the schools he attended and how they affected him in different ways and how kindergarten at the Henry H. Houston School made him feel out of place because he wasn’t able to sing along or hear any of the music in class. Then, in third grade he switched schools and attended the now Plymouth Meeting Friends School and thought it was going well until another boy kicked a football at him and knocked him to the ground causing him to lose his hearing aid battery. Another school experience he didn’t enjoy was at Germantown Friends School where Mark states 95% of the time he had no clue what was going on and that when the teacher was done lecturing he would scramble around asking for the assignment and had to learn how to do it on his own. Lynn has been through the special education system and was diagnosed with dyslexia in her twenties. During her elementary years, Lynn could not quite put her finger on it but she was different from the other children. She had difficulty reading and writing and could not keep up academically with her peers. Around this period of time, Lynn began taking special education classes where she would receive instruction, which would help her get on task. As she moved through junior high to high school, her LD became more apparent. Lynn felt alone and different from the other children, which was shown through her voice as she felt ashamed for having to go to summer school.
BM is a 63-year-old women born in St. Joseph Missouri. She sustained a right cerebrovascular accident 3 years ago responsible for her left hemiplegia. Since her stroke BM has not been able to independently live on her own, work or care for herself. Due to her health condition she is completely wheelchair bound and is dependent on the caregivers at the assisted living facility where she resides. It was painful to see how hard the parents worked to get Lynn to be normal like the rest of the family. They spent so much of their time focusing on getting her to talk and read lips that they overlooked one huge factor: that no matter how hard they tried, Lynn was deaf. It was so frustrating to see how much resistance they had towards using sign language. It was sad to see how disappointed the parents were when they learned of Lynn’s deafness even though it was easy to see they loved their child very much. I feel as though this book was a great look into how the world wants to fix, and repair people with disabilities and how strong and proud the deaf community is that they would rather consider themselves to be special and of their own culture than to be considered less abled than a hearing person. I like that the story started off with the parents frantically trying to fix Lynn, and ultimately led to their love, acceptance, and celebration of their daughter’s deafness. He has addressed the challenges in his life by staying positive and setting goals. He maintains a full time college schedule, participates in the work study program and has an after school job. He is very organized with his schedule and makes time for an active social life with his friends. He stated that he feels very independent. For those who are not familiar with the story of Helen Keller or the play 'The Miracle Worker', it recalls the life of a girl born in 1880 who falls tragically ill at the young age of two years old, consequently losing her ability to hear, speak, and see. Helen's frustration grew along side with her age; the older she got the more it became apparent to her parents that she was living in more of an invisible box, than the real world. Her imparities trapped her in life that seemed unlivable. Unable to subject themselves to the torment which enveloped them; watching, hearing and feeling the angst which Helen projected by throwing plates and screaming was enough for them to regret being blessed with their own senses. The Kellers, in hopes of a solution, hired Anne Sullivan, an educated blind woman, experienced in the field of educating sensory disabilities arrived at the Alabama home of the Kellers in 1887. "On Being a Cripple" is an autobiographical essay by Nancy Mairs. The author was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in her late twenties, and has since then lost full use of several limbs. Despite the stigma around the use of the word, Mairs refers to herself as a "cripple". With the use of this word she attempts to accept the reality of her situation without feeling sorry for herself. The author also demands the same of her readers and the people that she meets in her life. Mairs writes to those who wish to learn more about what it is like to live with this debilitating disease and how people react to it. She uses this essay to make a point about how society labels people while telling her story in a manner which cites examples from her life. She describes her life through everyday situations that occur when living with MS. Mairs does not have the same physical abilities that most of us don't think twice about, but she carries on with her life without the need for pity or a new vocabulary that attempts to make her condition seem less severe.
In order to successfully deal with a disability, a person must come to terms with how the disability will affect their lives, and the adjustment needed in order to live a rewarding life. Mrs. Cumberbatch disability was acquired, and she made the adjustment mentally first, not that it was easy but she had faith in God. Additionally, a strong support network gives the person the desire to continue to live.
The story takes place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where Mark was born. Both of his parents were deaf, but his grandparents were hearing. From birth until first grade, he had perfectly normal hearing so he developed language skills as any normal child would. Mark’s hearing loss was slow, and happened overtime without going noticed. When the reality of his hearing loss struck his family and teachers, questions about his education aroused. His parents and his grandparents were worried that teaching him sign language would draw him from learning spoken language, so it was decided that Mark would be raised as a normal hearing and speaking child.
Disability and reactions to those who are disabled are socially constructed, and vary from generation to generation and from culture to culture. As these precepts change and alter with time and knowledge how we treat those who are labeled as disabled evolves- sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worst. Harriet McBryde Johnson’s and John Hockenberry’s experiences are all too familiar. The challenges faced by these two individuals many times were not with the disability itself, but was from how the world responded to them. Harriet McBryde Johnson had many of her work colleagues unaware and unbelieving of a dire prognosis because of how she personally handled life, how integrated she was with the world around her. Disabilities can come in many forms and can cause many attributes of a person to shift or change over the course of time. Webster’s Dictionary defines disability as “a physical or mental condition that limits a person’s movements, senses, or activities,” as well as, “a disadvantage of handicap, especially one imposed or recognized by the law.” In the short story by Flannery O’Connor, “Good Country People,” we can see described one such person. Joy-Hulga shows both mental and physical conditions of her disability, but also the bravery to overcome her disability. Flannery O’Connor does a fine job showing the readers the difficulties of living with and overcoming a disability.
People who have physical disabilities often experience negative situations and connotations that they must overcome to thrive in society. People who offer narratives about their disabilities often give the most accurate representation about the challenges those with disabilities face. Ms. Marenge, reported that one of the hardest things about leaving the rehabilitation center after becoming paralyzed was living in a house that was inaccessible, and having to rely on her family to carry her up and down the house (Casey Marenge, 2011). Similarly, a student with muscular dystrophy, says that she wishes more places were wheelchair accessible, because when they aren’t she feels that society is holding her back, and she can’t reach her full potential. Alisha also reported that t making friends is hard because some kids would ignore her at school because of her situation and she is often separated from the mainstream students at school. Alisha, doesn’t want to be defined by her disability, however, she believes that many people who look at her only see her wheelchair (Alisha Lee, 2011). Despite the many negative ways people who suffer from physical disabilities are affected, it is important to note that they don’t always feel bad for themselves, and that having a disability doesn’t stop them from loving
On March 3rd 1887 Keller’s life changed for the better, her mother Kate, heard about the Perkins school for the Blind and called Alexander Graham Bell and wrote to the head of the Perkins school for the Blind to ask for a teacher for Helen. This day was the day that Anne Sullivan arrived and became a large part of Keller’s life. Anne expected Keller’s behavior, because the girl was both deaf and illiterate. Anne knew she had to find a way to make Keller understand the meaning of words and, after a month of spelling in sign language words into Keller’s hand everything clicked into place as Anne held Keller’s hand under a water pump and the cool water washed over there hands she spelled out ‘W-A-T-E-R’ into Keller’s hand. Keller realized what this meant and was so excited and wanted to know everything, she learned 30 words that day.
Instead of addressing the fact that Laura has a disability, Amanda ignores it. Amanda expects Laura to have many gentleman callers, like she did. In reality, Laura is shy and self conscious, because she has not gotten over her minor disability. Amanda does not help Laura overcome her disability but denies it, and gives in to the illusion that Laura is okay. “Why, you’re not crippled, you just have a little defect--hardly noticeable, even (1.2.17)!” Laura’s disability drove her to miss class every day and go to the park. As mentioned above, deafness and blindness used to be two big obstacles in Keller’s life. Keller used to live in darkness and desperation as she couldn’t contact with the world normally like others people would do. However, by great effort, Keller overcame her challenge of communicating, thus “force” people to acknowledge to the abilities of a such deaf-blind person like her. Sullivan, a wonderful teacher who was also Keller’s teacher, helped Keller a lot with her communication.Thanked to Sullivan's extraordinary instructions as well as her patience and competence, after few years, Keller not only could read and write in Braille, but she also knew how use the sign language fluently. Knowed how to communicate helped Keller to gain her confidence, for she finally could express her thought to the world. Additionally, Keller conquered the challenge that seemed unable to vanquish, that would give Keller more courage to cope with her future challenges. Keller was saved from “ darkness” and “ hopelessness.” However, Keller not only found the way to get out of darkness for herself, but also she found the way out to thoses who had same obstacles like
