Kant and Mill have different views on the connection between feelings and moral actions, and whether the two are competing or cooperative values. Are we, as humans, supposed to base our moral actions solely on our feelings, or on a rational reason? What is our goal in life? Is it to be moral, self-determining human beings or to acquire happiness for as many people possible? Does happiness, as a form of feelings, contradicts with what is considered as morally right? These philosophical questions were raised by the writings of both Kant and Mill, which I will be addressing in this opinion piece through an evaluation of both arguments.

After my relatively short, but rich experience in life, I came to believe that we, humans, are a mixture of feelings and emotions that cannot be separated from our rational reasoning, even in the toughest of circumstances. We try to separate our feelings from clouding our judgments, but we are likely to fail in some shape or form. Even if the juries of our courts are required to give an impartial verdict, many times they find themselves swayed by their feelings and emotions. Our weakness is the lack of separating feelings from rational reasoning, which Mill turns it into a strength that could bring us together. He suggests that we should strive to make the best of our feelings by focusing on reaching the “high pleasure”, which is to be shared with others around us. If the action that we are about to do is going to increase our collective happiness, then Mill deems it as moral. That is the strength of Mill’s philosophy which, in essence, took Utilitarianism to the next level by shifting the focus from quantity to quality. This shift is aimed at sharing happiness in the community which depends on our “higher pleasure”.
