There are many juvenile offenders in adult prisons for many reasons.14-year-old Quantell Lott’s was sentenced to life in prison without parole for murdering his 17-year-old stepbrother Michael Berton. Both of the brothers were playing around with blow guns and darts. The situation increased so quickly. One of them grabbed a knife and stabbed the other one. Michael was dead before he made it to the hospital (Chen). Quantell is 23 years old now in prison and according to the article written by Stephanie Chen on CNN he says, “They locked me up and threw away the keys. They took away all hope for the future.” Those words that Quantell said have a meaningful argument. People don’t give second chances when they should. He was just a kid who made …show more content…

It is also a great way for the community to be involved by helping juveniles reducing their criminal behavior. According to the article “Preventing Juvenile Delinquency” by Alina Saminsky, “prevention programs positively impact the general public because they stop this crime from happening in the first place.” If kids can be addressed before a problem occurs, it can change peoples lives. Not only will the community benefit from it by avoiding future catastrophes, but so will teens by not spending time in prison. Prevention programs help detect risk factors that a juvenile shows at an early age. Those risk factors include “Fetal substance exposure, Prenatal difficulties, as well as an abusive and violent family” (Saminsky). Other factors that a child might be at risk of becoming a criminal are “Poor parental supervision, criminal parents or siblings, low income, large family size, poor housing, low intelligence, and low educational attainment” (Saminsky). Some programs have the community involved such as Mentoring, after school recreation, conflict resolution, classroom and behavior management are some examples (“Prevention and Early Intervention”). According to Sminsky “children who participate are less likely to drop out and perform delinquent behavior because they have had better early school experiences and a stronger commitment to education.” These programs helps teens reduce their criminal behavior, Which then leads them to not do serial crimes and end up in adult prisons. In the article “Prevention and Intervention Programs for Juvenile Offenders” written by an Australian screen and voice actor, special effects technician, researcher, designer and media consultant, Peter Greenwood says “an effective prevention strategy, particularly when the program includes home visits or works with parents in some other way” (197). In other words the more parents and adults are involved positively in a kid’s life it less likely for them to end up doing criminal actions.
