“I had hoped that the white moderate would understand that law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice and that when they fail in this purpose they become the dangerously structured dams that block the flow of social progress.” (pp.221) Martin Luther King Jr. discussed in his essay, as he sat in the Birmingham jail. While the justice system was created for law and order, the decisions of the judiciary department are rarely justified. Many of the cases that occur in court are unjustly swayed in favor of the more affluent member of the court, and as such become immoral to our society. While his victim faced many emotional issues, he made it appear as if he was the victim and she was falsely accusing him. When Turner received his sentence, it was a mere six months, when the typical sentence is nearly ten years. Since Turner was in college, his judge viewed him as a promising student and did not think someone with such a high status should ruin his life by spending time in prison. Behind the scenes, Turner’s parents were rich, and the public believes that the judge was bribed to give him a shorter sentence in order to allow him to stay on his swim team. Not only is this an injustice to the victim, it is immoral to allow someone capable of defiling woman to be back on the street. During Turner’s trial, his victim wrote a letter addressed to him, talking about her experience and how his actions traumatized her. She was felt like she was no longer in charge of her body, because she did not know what had been inside of her and what had happened to her. She no longer felt safe at parties that she formerly enjoyed because she did not know if it would happen again. The victim had no memory of what occurred that night and Turner used that to his advantage. He tried to explain in his new statement that she agreed to everything and he thought she was enjoying it. Individuals are free of consequences due to the severely damaged legal system. Our society is learning that women can escape consequences because of their sex, and women are using this to their advantage. Many women believe they can easily escape a ticket if they pretend to feel bad and as if they did not realize that they were doing something wrong, or by faulting their speed on “womanly problems.” Men can easily ignore consequences if they are of higher power or have the money to buy out the judge.
