While Americans frequently eat at fast food restaurants, most people do not know the harm it could be causing to their bodies. Obesity causes many illnesses, many of which are fatal, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. According to Jeffrey Friedman, “The United States is rapidly becoming the most obese nation in the world with nearly 300,000 deaths each year” (Friedman 594). Although lack of exercise and people opting for computers over outdoor activities contribute to the obesity epidemic, one of the main contributors to obesity is Americans’ frequent use of fast food restaurants due to the unhealthy nature of the food, which is often fried and accompanied by soda, and the lack of nutritional content; therefore, fast food restaurants should be …show more content…

Eating fried foods from fast food restaurants contributes to obesity. One of the negatives would be the oil used in preparing those fried foods. The different types of oil that are used to fry the food are vegetable, canola, peanut, and olive oil. All of these types of oil have 120 calories and 14g of fat. What about items like chicken nuggets and fingers that are battered and fried in the oil, which highly increases their fat content? Chicken nuggets and fingers are some of the most popular items, especially for young children, which is even worse. Children are being introduced to fattening, fried foods at a very young age, such as french fries, that come standard with every fast food meal. Let’s consider a breakfast item like hash browns that are fried. Hash browns contain a lot of glucose and carbohydrates. They are often unhealthy to eat because they lead to increased sugar and fat formation in the body.
