When I was around the age of 8 or 9, I read lots of books and realized it was so easy to be an author of a book. At that point of my life, I was convinced that I was going to be an author when I grow up. Throughout my life in elementary and middle school, I was given simple writing assignments that didn’t take much thought or research, making me feel as if the writing was effortless. I realized that when I entered high school, I would be writing papers that consisted of 5 to 6 pages long or longer and this would be challenging for me because of my weakness in writing.
It wasn’t until I was in 9th grade, when I was asked to write a response paper to an excerpt from James Madison’s Federalists Paper No.10. In order to be considered as a student in the upcoming school year’s AP United States History class, also known as APUSH, we were required to write two analytical paragraphs arguing why Madison was right and why he was wrong, from Federalist No.10, Madison states: “Democracy is the most vile form of government ... democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.” Looking at this excerpt only made me wonder how the course in the fall would be, and I dreaded looking forward to that. This assignment consisted of two things I didn’t enjoy: analyzing and history. I procrastinated until the last minute to attempt this assignment only because it didn’t spark my interest. It was important to share this milestone of my life because it represents my growth as a writer and how I have faced writing as a challenge and have overcome it. This pivotal moment in my writing life is an experience that showed me with practice; you can progress. The class dealt with a large amount of writing practice, which assisted me as a writer. Although it was a frustrating course due to the content and writing, I was able to complete the class and leave with more confidence in my writing. I am proud of myself for taking the challenge of writing the proposal essay and taking the class even though I felt as if I was setting myself up for failure. Failure never discouraged me but rather encouraged me to persevere with it and exceed. The writing was an obstacle for me but now that I have overcome that, I can write with more confidence and ease.
