On the twenty fifth of August of this year, as I was making my way to the first class of that would kick off my college career, I thought of the renowned Lao-tzu saying, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Anxious and unsure of my strength as a writer, I sat down in my Comp 1000 class where my journey in my writing development would begin, and with each assignment completed it would ultimately continue to escalate in its proficiency. The first task given was to write a brief treatise on something I possessed that was of high emotional value to me. This transcription would serve as the diagnostic verdict of my writing strength. Once after writing about my deceased grandmother’s earrings, it ascertained that while I was dexterous in some areas, I did have some weaknesses that throughout the course I should focus on refining. The facets in my writing that were highlighted as necessitating work on for improvement included organization, structure, and emphasizing support for my thesis. Now knowing the strengths and weaknesses in my writing, when it came to the first major essay, which was on a belief I strongly hold, I directed this essay into entombing bad habits encased in my …show more content…
The decision I chose to evaluate was whether or not I should get a sternum tattoo in the coming months. I found this composition the most challenging to compile as the preferred structure for this text was to be point by point instead of my own preference of subject by subject. Outlining the development of this essay proved to test me in my writing abilities as I could not seem to find the niche in which it would all mesh together coherently. Once I did find the rhythm of how this paper would flow, I found that when looking at this transcription as a reader, it is easier to understand, proving to be a more enjoyable reading

My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.

Then I used one hour to work on this essay after class. At the same time, I signed up for the writing tutor online, used my free time to meet with the tutor and fixed it at home as soon as possible. Above all I gradually improved myself. So, I become more and more self-conscious and responsible for the study of writing which I didn't have enough before.
Throughout this portfolio, I demonstrate my abilities to critique my own writing and to make an argument based on evidence and analysis. My revised papers are the evidence, and the analysis I make is how these papers show my growth, improvement, and now capable writing abilities to meet the outcomes of English 131. In the very creation of this portfolio, in addition to the revised essays, I accomplish multiple global objectives for this class. These objectives include writing a complex claim, writing with intertextuality, showing awareness of my audience, and revealing the effect of successful, critical revision and editing techniques. As I aimed to meet these outcomes throughout the quarter, my writing slowly, but surely developed into critical, organized, and academically correct text.
Going into this course, I felt that the reading and writing skills I learned in high school were very beneficial in preparing me for an English college course. In high school, I was enrolled in GATE and AP English courses. In these classes, I was assigned several readings and was taught to actively read by doing annotations. I was to summarize the writer 's main points, to write down my own opinions, or to connect it to any personal experiences. These annotations helped me understand the writer 's message better because I was able to break down the things the writer said and only focused on the important points. Then, I was also able to form my own opinion on that topic by deciding whether I agreed or disagreed with the author’s opinion. Moreover, I used evidence from the text to support my argument.
‘I am going to fail’ was the very first thought that crept into my mind on that very first day of class. Before I stepped into the classroom on the first day, I felt pretty good about my writing. I had done previously well in English, and didn’t think this class would be much of a challenge. This all changed on the first day of school, when my professor talked about the level of reading and writing expected for this class. I remember thinking ‘I don’t read, why couldn’t I have been born someone who likes to read?!’ Since this moment on the very first day of class, I have grown immensely through hard work. In this essay, I will explain what I have learned over the course of this class about myself, and about writing.
Writing isn’t my strongest suit and always has room for improvement. Throughout this semester writing composition 10103 wasn’t my favorite class in the world, but it was a great learning experience to improve my writing skills. Transitioning from a high school academic English class to college level writing class was a big step for me. I spent countless nights where I would just stare at my computer screen having no idea what to write, but practice makes perfect. Having a professor with high standards in his students in their writing skills really made me push myself the hardest I have ever pushed myself in a writing course. The work in this portfolio shows that I have improved in using methods of organization and sentence structure. Although I made drastic improvement in my organization and sentence structure methods, I have much more room for improvement in my writing skills, and also need to improve my essay planning and writing my essays on time.
Multiple essays have been formulated during the duration of Composition 1. These essays have taught me an important lesson about my writing, failure is acceptable in order to grow. On the other hand, I made an important discovery last year that I want to study journalism and advance further in that field after college. From taking journalism classes, to blogging in my spare time, to always getting an A on my papers, I thought I had no room to improve. I was mistaken. Therefore, because of the rigorous essay work each essay brought, I learned more about how to write different pieces and grow from my “failure”.
As a writer there are many elements of writing that I struggle with, especially when composing an essay. When writing an essay, there are usually many skills that need to be used in order to be successful with the writing assignment. Many times in writing I struggle with explaining and fully developing the supporting details and ideas in my essay. I would also like to improve on incorporating clear topic sentences and concluding sentences, connecting my paragraphs ideas back to my thesis. Lastly, improvement can be made in my writing by avoiding awkward or wordy sentences. Writers face numerous challenges in their writing but strive to overcome or improve these challenges with each piece they write.
The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning, revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills. As a collegiate writer, my strength lies in my clear understanding of the fundamentals of writing, while my primary weakness is proofreading my own work.
In the beginning of the English Composition 1 course, I felt as if I was not a very good writer. A lot of what I learned in high school was completely different than that of my college English course. Over the course of this semester our class worked on several different types of essays which include scholarly discourse, discourse community analysis, a persuasive paper, and finally a critical reflective essay. After almost completing the course, I feel like I have grown to become a more prepared writer because of all of the useful information that I have learned. Campus resources such as the Writing Center have also contributed tremendously to my success in my English course. I am convinced that everything that I have learned this current semester will be transferrable to all of my future classes because I will most likely have to write other scholarly essays, lab reports, and so on. Some of the many things that I have learned over the semester are that when writing a thesis statement you must include everything that you plan to talk about in your paper. Also learned is that feedback helps with your growth and allows for you to fix the things you did wrong in the next paper, because you will know what to do and what not to do. All of these things can be used in my future classes throughout my college career. This essay reflects on how my writing of English Composition essays has grown, or benefited from continuous revising, visiting the Writing Center, and implementing the feedback I have received from my instructor.
I still have a lot to learn about the writing process, but I have gained a lot of knowledge while working on the three projects for my 1102 course this past semester. The challenges that I have faced while completing the poetry exposition, critical analysis, and creative project have assisted me in discovering techniques to improve my writing. Each writing assignment has challenged my approach to reading and dissecting literature, as well as altered the way that I respond to literature with writing. As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
