########This is missing the beginning##########engagement in school work coupled with planning for a future in further and Higher education. The end of year 11 concludes with a trip abroad to experience a residential at a University for the top 12 achievers. Typically the year 11 trip visits the UMass Boston Upward Bound programme on their summer residential experience. Students live on campus with American Upward Bound students that attend Boston Public Schools. These students are from similar economic backgrounds but are from different cultures .
The programme is ultimately judged by the number of students who progress to further education and achieve above predicted in their GCSE’s. While programme structure is focused on academic development, it is inclusive of youth development activities. Students attend voluntarily on Saturday mornings during the school year. Programming begins at 10 AM every Saturday for 28 weeks a year for two years. Programme attendance is closely monitored and reported to schools and families. Programme attendance is also used as a evaluation tool.
The staff structure is multifaceted and includes both paid staff and youth volunteers. The staff are overseen by a University employed Head of Schools, Colleges and Widening Participation and a Programme Manager employed by Islington Council. Group leaders are employed to follow students through their entire two years in the programme. Their role is designed to oversee pastoral issues, socialisation and the academic development of students in their group. The two Pastoral Supervisors provide for structured interventions for students on a one on one basis. Pastoral Supervisors also mentor 2 student alumni to oversee the peer mentors who work on the programme (Young,A., Perrewe,P.L.. 2000). Student Ambassadors are University students provided by London Metropolitan University Widening Participation Department to provide academic assistance to the students in class and to impart knowledge of their journey through further education into University. Most of the Ambassadors attend London Metropolitan University, however, there are a few who are Upward Bound Alumni, who now attend various universities. Volunteers are comprised of peer mentors. Peer Mentors are recent programme alumni who volunteer to assist students with academic and social support. Peer Mentors are typically further education students.
Upward Bound serves 8 out of 10 Islington secondary schools, currently excluding the Academies. Students attend a mix of single sex and mixed comprehensive schools in the borough.
