John Augustus Sutter was born in Baden, Switzerland on the 15th of February in 1803. Sutter is the reason for the California Gold Rush that began in 1848. Sutter had a fort called “New Helvetia” beginning in 1842 that ended quickly in 1844. A man named James Wilson Marshall was planning to build John Sutter a water-powered sawmill, when he came across flakes of gold in the American River near Coloma, California in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This Discovery happened on January 24th in 1848 causing the town to have no till afterwards. Once the discovery got out it was soon the center for merchants and miners. Which was one of the many areas he spent time in before ending up in which is now the Sacramento area. John Sutter eventually ended up in Hawaii and he had intended to raise funds for a California expedition that ended up passing by Alaska. In 1839 John Sutter arrived on July 1st in 1839. Sutter approached the governor, Juan Alvarado, and was able to impress him enough to obtain a land grant. Sutter was given the opportunity to find a suitable location where he could begin a settlement. And if the settlement was successful, Sutter could eventually apply for Mexican citizenship. Many Americans probably thought this would be perfect living while Sutter was thinking the complete opposite. Which by this caused him to move back to the Moravian colony in Lititz, Pennsylvania. It seemed as though he couldn’t catch a break everything kept flipping on him. Earlier stated the Americans started expanding his for became the official role in early settlement of California. It was a perfectly convenient for refuge for those who traveled. It was said that Sutter was no doubt despot to Indians that he had employed. The workers were in holding pens or they were locked in rooms. These workers were not treated at all how they should have been. Their rooms were known to be “nocturnal confinement” which was not what the Indians had agreed on. He was miss treating his workers about living he also didn’t feed them properly, he fed them like creatures. He was also known for selling Indians into slavery. Lienhard described graphically their incarceration: “As the room had neither beds nor straw, the inmates were forced to sleep on the bare floor.
