Jazz the word comes from a creole word that means both African dance and copulation. As jazz grew in popularity and influence, jazz served as a means bring young people together. The people of today, raised by the sounds of The Beatles and Pearl Jam have forgotten all about the musicians that paved the way for these artists, and the musical styles that evolved into rock and roll, rhythm and blues and rap or hip hop. Unfortunately the music that once dominated the night clubs, restaurants, and radio stations is now heard only in elevators or when we go to a grandparents house to visit. What is left of jazz are small portions of the music that people take and sample with in a new song. Jazz and its historical figures have mistreated and forgotten by today's society. One of the figure most forgotten is John Birks Gillespie, known to the jazz world as "Dizzy" Gillespie.
The jazz side of Fusion Jazz gives it a sense of sophistication and complexity from the improvisations among the musicians. The rock side of Fusion Jazz gave it the power and the hard yet simple rhythms that came from the electric guitars and basses from rock music. This style also incorporated more straight rhythms, such as eighth notes, instead of the previous swing style. Because of the wild popularity of rock music after Hard Bop jazz, the composers and performers of Jazz music wanted to get into the fad and capitalize off of it, thus the creation of Fusion Jazz. This plan worked, to an extent. Many true rock fans who did not consider themselves fans of regular, older styles of jazz enjoyed Fusion jazz more than “classic” fans of jazz. Many people do not even consider Fusion jazz to be “real” jazz music. However, many forget that Jazz music was created because people wanted to be able to interpret music however they please, not have it be constricted to the rules or guidelines of other genres. Miles Davis again holds an important role in this style of music, and created one of the most well known and important fusion jazz records, “Bitches Brew”. Other notable artists of the time and style include Chick Corea (keyboards), John McLaughlin (guitar), and Whether Report
Imagine you are walking the streets of New Orleans. You are standing right where jazz was established in the United States of America. Jazz wasn’t just about music, it also affected the culture involving social, economic, artistic and jazz leaders.
The cool jazz style arose after WW2. This new style of jazz was created by the great Miles Davis he is credit for this because of his Birth of Cool recording but in fact Lester Young is the face of cool Jazz. In spite of the fact that there were many other artists who made the cool jazz sound, a standout amongst the most compelling was Lester Young. This was a young saxophone player who had a more casual style than huge numbers compared to his peers, with an attention on smooth playing and an inclination to fall simply behind the beat as opposed to pushing it ahead. He was additionally more centered around investigating and creating tune, while bebop artists were more inspired by investigating and surprising rhythms. Another big standout amongst the most well-known figures in the early cool jazz development was trumpeter Miles Davis. Davis set the cool jazz kind via looking for a lighter, expressive, and more casual sound. He did a progression of recordings in 1949 and 1950 to explore different avenues regarding this sound, and these recordings, later
Jazz is the kind of music that makes me want to do one of two things. Depending on the mood of the jazz, sometimes I feel like relaxing and just listening to the music and letting it run through me. Other times I feel like getting up and dancing as if I have not a care in the world. The jazz concert I attended on at SLO Brewing Company on October 6, 2001 inspired me to do both of these due to the variety used by the musicians in dynamic, rhythm, tempo, and many other aspects of music.
Miles Davis was a key player in the evolution of modern jazz. In the 1940’s he participated in the bebop craze, then initiated the cool jazz era in the 1950’s. Bebop involved a higher register and note fueled playing while Miles favored the middle register, with longer and less frequency of notes, and a
Before diving into his TV appearances, a summary of the man himself and his extraordinary contributions and accomplishments seems to be in order. Trumpet player, band leader, musical innovator, composer and in the words of fellow musician Chico Hamilton, “jazz’s only superstar” (Kart 201), Miles Davis boasts a career that spans five decades, from the mid 1940s to 1991, which is almost unheard of in the music industry where careers tend to be much shorter. His long career includes awards such as eight Grammy awards, a Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement, and three Hall of Fame awards. Davis is an icon in the jazz world, not only for his long career but also for revolutionizing the jazz genre. Without Davis’s influence, jazz would not possess the rich and complex sound it has today.
Jhon Coltrane and Miles Davis to be among his biggest influences in music. After playing
Jazz music is a musical art genre that developed in the African-American communities in New Orleans. Although jazz was originally thought to be a lower class movement meant for the impoverished black communities, jazz music quickly developed to become a major form of musical expression in the 1920s. The musical elements of jazz permeated throughout American literature, as a means of exposing the struggles of African-Americans living in a racist society, while providing comfort and healing through the universalities of suffering. The musical techniques of jazz, including call and response, syncopation, and improvisation, provide a means of communication and an expression of hardships to provide comfort and healing
From there, his arms moved across the set playing on and off drum heads. After the first listen, his rhythms seem to not connect together. But after another go-around, they fitted just right. What makes his style unique is that he sees a melody in a drumset. When he hits the drums and switches back and forth to demonstrate the individually different pitches, it comes out as an improvised phrase just like any other brass instrument would give in a
All types of music require musicians. In the H.R (Harlem Renaissance), there were many who contributed to this new style of music known as jazz. These musicians all have their own style and form. Each of these styles has in some way influenced the evolution of jazz. Louis “Sachmo” Armstrong is recognized as the most famous trumpet player of this time. His “hot bop” style was heard in places like the Cotton Club and the Apollo Theatre. Everyone from all over the country would come to see him. Armstrong recorded such works as I’m in the Mood for Love, and You Rascal you (http://library.thinkquest.org/26656/english/music.html). Another famous person during this era was Coleman Hawkins, a saxophone player. Hawkins is recognized as the first great saxophonists of Jazz. His most famous work was a piece named Body and Soul (http://library.thinkquest.org…). Hawkins has also recorded with artists such as Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington. Other people such as Bessie Smith, Josephine Baker, Duke Ellington, and “Dizzie” Gillespie have also made many contributions to the development of Jazz.
Jazz comprises of a wide range of music from the ragtime to the present music listened to by many people. The music evolution has taken roughly 100 years and jazz has been put in this particular evolution as one of the music styles today. In the definition of jazz, there is no actual definition of jazz because it a composition of very many music styles hence making it hard to get the required definition that would describe it fully. Attempts being made to define jazz have a basis of traditional music that have similar characteristics as jazz but not real jazz. Using the American or African music examples, the researchers argue that the definition is very broad and wide. Ernest Berendt one of the researchers says that jazz originated from America in the process of confronting Negros with Europeans in terms of music. This can then be termed as a tool of identity between the two groups of people due to the racist and discrimination aspects that faced America. This was now a tool that could identify the two groups to bring about national integration and understanding among the members of America. In America jazz has incorporated time as a special factor and is now referred to as swing. Swing means spontaneity and vitality of the production of music which has an improvisation role to play to the listeners. This particular jazz music contains a particular manner of phrasing which acts as a mirror to an individual and the personality of the musician performing that particular jazz music on stage. The early jazz musicians include Double Bassist Reggie Workman, saxophone player Pharaoh Sanders, and drummer Idris Muhammad who were performing in 1978 hence dating back to early jazz performance and presentation.
Now a days, many believe that jazz is not that important of music genre, but with our history, jazz plays a big role. “Jazz does not belong to one race or culture, but it is a gift that America has given to the world.”, quoted by Ahmad Alaadeen. Jazz in the 1920’s opened the eyes of whites and invited them into African American culture; it evolved Americans to where we are today since it brought a change to the music scene, an acceptance of African Americans, and a change of lifestyles.
a unique sincerity and magnetism that has withstood the test of time. From its humble beginnings in New Orleans, jazz quickly spread throughout the United States and soon became an illustrious component of American culture. This art form not only offered a distinct and musically euphonic prospect, but also gave voice to the African American community. The development of jazz tore down barriers and confines forever shaping music and culture around the world.
Jazz has been a genre we have been studying over these past couple of weeks. During these weeks I have acquired new knowledge that has interested me in this genre. I never viewed jazz as being a political style of music nor did I know that there were songs that contained political messages. Finding out about these different songs and jazz having some aspect of political style to it intrigued me to write about this genre.
