James Naismith was born on November 6, 1861 in Almonte, Canada where he lived with his mother and father. James was one of three children. When he was eight years old he moved to a milling community in Grand Calumet. Just two years later he was orphaned because his parents gave in to typhoid fever. After that James and his siblings moved to Canadian village to live with their grandmother. After living with their grandmother for just two years they had to move in with their uncle because their grandmother died.
In his later years he attended Almonte High School. In his free time he worked on the family farm and played sports with his friends. After graduating high school he attended McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. There he played football, rugby, lacrosse, and gymnastics. In 1887 he graduated and earned a bachelor’s degree in arts of philosophy. After he graduated he started working with the YMCA. He wanted to be an instructor who combined spirituality and athletics for young athletes.
After serving as McGill 's Athletic Director, James Naismith moved on to the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA in 1891, where the sport of basketball was born (http://kansasheritage.org/people/naismith.html). He is also credited with designing the first football helmet. He penned the first basketball rulebook, and established the basketball program at University of Kansas (http://www.biography.com/people/james-a-naismith-9420059). James Naismith contributed a lot to the world of sports. He eventually died on November 28, 1939 in Kansas.

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA), was formed in Geneva, Switzerland in 1932. The founding eight countries of FIBA were Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Romania and Switzerland. Basketball became an Olympic sport just four years later. The US was not always a member of FIBA They did not become a member of FIBA until 1934
