Jack the Ripper is one of the most well-known serial killers of the ages. Although everyone knows the name, “Jack the Ripper,” nobody really knows of his true identity. When the murder victims were found the press and the detectives could never put a name with the crime.
Jack the Ripper is a mythic figure comparable with Frankenstein and Dracula. The Rippers first three murdered whores, in 1888, were believed to be by the same person. These murdered victims all seemed to occur around the Parish Church of Saint Mary, also called “the White Chapel.” (Fido…1)
“Jack the Ripper,” was the name given to an unidentified serial killer in the White Chapel district of London in 1888. The name came from a letter left at the crime scene, written by someone claiming to be the killer. The letter was believed to be a joke and thought to be written by a reporter in a deliberate attempt to heighten interest in the investigation.
It was said that Jack the Ripper would leave letters exclaiming him as the murderer. Sometimes the letters were put in poetic form, while others exclaimed in detail what he had done. The letters were neatly crafted and found pleasantly disturbing, but no one knew who they were from. Investigators and many others thought the reason for these letters was to scare or even play with the emotions of the victim’s family and friends. As the killer was never truly found, the investigation turned into a historical research. It was so prominent that the research of Jack the Ripper became known as Ripperology. So whether the world will ever know the true identity of the killer of all killers, it will always be in study.

Christopher McCandless had always admired the works of Jack London. He even went as far as naming Jack London “king”. McCandless relished the naturalisitc elements of London’s writings, elements that he chose to ignore in his own life. Jack London often depicted men as being controlled by their environment and being unable to withstand any heavy circumstances. He depicted themes about the frailty of man and man’s inability to overcome nature. But McCandless clearly did not take away any of the valuable lessons from these stories. He hailed London as “king” but never truly learned from London’s stories, dying in a tragically ironic way when he came to meet the same fate as the protagonist in Jack London’s “To Build a Fire”. These are but two from a long list that exists of Ripper suspects. Hundreds have at one time or another been alleged to be Jack the Ripper. Friends and acquaintances have debated the case for over a century. A renowned crime author has conducted her own investigation and has come to her own controversial conclusion about Jack. There have been movies made and board games created that revolve around Jack the Ripper. It seems that we will never know the truth of the Ripper’s identity, but in reality, do we really want to know?
Jack the Ripper had killed at least five female prostitutes around 1888 in London and was never identified. Although there are some suspects that might be the Ripper, like John Druitt, Prince Albert Victor, and other suspects. According to the evidence presented John Druitt is Jack the Ripper.

The first murder took place on August 31, 1888. The victim was Polly Nichols, a 42-year-old alcoholic. The Ripper cut her throat from ear to ear left to right, back to the vertebrae, and sliced open her abdomen from pelvis to stomach but no organs were removed. The autopsy found she sustained stab wounds to the vagina. The next killing took place on Saturday, September 8, 1888. Annie Chapman was 45 years of age, an alcoholic. She was found with her neck cut twice very deep almost as, in an attempt at deception. Her abdomen was cut open up to the breastbone and her small intestines placed on her right shoulder. Parts of her vagina and bladder had been removed and put over her left shoulder. On Sunday, September 30, 1988, Jack the Ripper committed a high risk double murder. The Ripper first attacked Elizabeth Stride in a courtyard. Stride was a 45-year-old alcoholic. The Ripper had cut her throat, severing the windpipe. The mutilation was very minimal compared to his previous victims and it is believed he was interrupted by a carriage entering the courtyard. Continuing in the tradition of Jack the Ripper and Dusseldorf Vampire Peter Kurten, while foreshadowing BTK, The Zodiac Killer was factually a world-wide, unknown murderer for five or numerous more murders in the northern region of California. The Zodiac Killer, whom is a strange, semi-secretive, smart killer has gotten away with all of his sneaky activities. The Zodiac Killer gave himself the unique name, and no one knows the meaning behind it. His target were young couples in the area. Was it a single, psychotic individual who did all of the killing, or was it a group of killers involved? The world is still blind to the fact of knowing exactly who is it to hold the culpability for these brutal murders.
Feigenbaum was a German psychopath who went by many aliases during his lifetime (his real name was Anton Zahn). He worked as a merchant on ships that had been docked near Whitechapel. In 1894, Feigenbaum was sent to the electric chair for the brutal murder of Juliana Hoffman. This assassination was committed with a dagger and there were traces of old blood on it. After dying, Feigenbaum’s attorney, William Stanford Lawton, stated that it was his belief that his ex-client was the notorious London murderer Jack the Ripper. He based his theory on a confession that Feigenbaum supposedly told him; “I have for years suffered from a singular disease, which induces an all-absorbing passion. This passion manifests itself in a desire to kill and mutilate every woman who falls in my way.” (www.casebook.org/suspects/carl-feigenbaum.html) His claim is supported by Trevor Marriott who wrote the book Jack the Ripper-The 21st Century Investigation. The authorities investigated these theories and found that Feigenbaum was in the White Chapel district when all the Jack the Ripper murders occurred. Additionally, witnesses claimed to have seen Feigenbaum frequently enter brothels. Lawton also claimed that Feigenbaum was knowledgeable on surgery and dissection. This theory, however, lacks evidence. Lawton’s theory was based on what Feigenbaum supposedly confessed, but who’s to say this confession happened? Furthermore, Feigenbaum only confessed
She was found early one morning lying near the side of the road. Her throat had been cut from ear-to-ear. Not long after this, the body of Annie Chapman was found. The cut in her neck was so deep it almost severed her head. Three weeks passed with no signs from the Ripper, but on September 27, 1888, a letter arrived that was supposedly from the killer himself. He stated that they would soon hear from him again and he would claim another life. There were many doubts that it was a sincere letter, but three days later he struck. Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes were the unlucky victims. Elizabeth had been cut at the neck, but unlike any of the other victims, the Ripper was unable to attack her abdomen. Police assumed he had been interrupted somehow. The Rippers last victim was Mary Kelly. She was much younger and prettier than any of the other victims. The Ripper had taken his time to mutilate her entire body. Her hair and eyes were the only things recognizable left. Police described this as the “work of the devil” (Anderson 7). He mutilated his victim’s bodies in a way that indicated he had some knowledge of the human anatomy. He is known by three names; “Leather Apron,” “The Whitechapel Murder,” and most infamous of all, “Jack the Ripper.” The man who terrorized the poor Whitechapel district of London’s East End during the Victorian era and left behind one of the greatest murder mysteries of all time.

In conclusion, there is still too much unknown facts about some of the suspect to pin it down to one person. They still have no idea who is Jack the Ripper and will most likely never will. There are many theories on who the Ripper come be. Will Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman ,Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly ever know their murder? Is Jack the Ripper Carl Feigenbaum or James Kelly? Will we ever know?
When he found out that his mother had attempted suicide he looked through all the newspapers and newsletters for anything about it, he also looked for the name of his true father. He thought that William Chaney might have been his father, but after writing to him and receiving a letter back stating that Chaney could not have kids he figured out that his mother had affairs with at least one other man, (Jacklondon.com). London was so destroyed by the letter he received from his “father” that he quit school. He then started to write more and more.
Jack the Ripper was one of the most famous and renowned killers in history. Even though he was not the first serial killer, he was the first killer to strike on a metropolis setting. Jack the Ripper was in his prime at a time when the media had a strong control over society and society as a whole was becoming much more literate. Jack started his killing campaign at a time of political controversy between the liberals and social reformers along with the Irish Home rule partisans. The reports of Jack the Ripper were collected and reported by the police, but then the different newspapers with their political influences slightly distorted the stories to give them their own effect. It has been more the one hundred years since the last murder and there is no longer any more original evidence, and the “facts” about the stories have changed over time due to different writers or differing sources. The press changed Jack the Ripper from being a depressed killer of prostitutes to one of the most romantic figures seen throughout history. One fact that most sources agreed upon was that the Ripper was a killer who wanted nothing more than to strike fear into the entire city by horribly mutilating his victims and then leaving them in locations where they were sure to be seen. Jack was the type of killer that wants fame and loved the fact that his “name” was on everyone’s lips and was able to strike fear into anyone and everyone’s heart.
