Every person will have their own opinions and input on education and what is, or is not, wrong with it today. Some of these people include those who can actually make a change in the system; we have heard empty promises from senators, congressmen, and our very own presidents. We all want to improve the system for our children, siblings and for ourselves. In 1848 Horace Mann found solutions for education, but today we need more focus on foreign languages, nutrition, and personal finance classes.
In 1848 Mann wanted a lot from the education system that was already being provided for children. One of Horace Mann’s main ideas is about physical education. Horace states the following in his essay, “[…] It is the duty of all governing minds in society […] to diffuse a knowledge of these beauty and beneficial laws of health and life throughout the length and breadth of the State (112).” In other words, Horace Mann wanted everybody to be responsible for teaching the younger minds about nutrition and how to live better lives. Mann wanted the officials and common people to make an example of healthy living in order for the youth to grow accustom to these habits; if children grew up surrounded by these examples they would carry these healthy habits with them and be able to teach them to the future generations. A second idea that Mann focuses on is about the importance of moral education. I personally believe that this idea is a signification point to bring attention to. All things considered it is fair to say that we need to demand more from the school system for the children of the future. Not many countries can say that education is provided free of cost. But how can we take so much pride in the fact our country does when what is provided in the United States is not actually preparing the youth for success after they graduate from high school. There is so much knowledge that high school graduates lack now going into college or the working field and we need to find a solution to fix this nationwide problem.
