Interdisciplinary research is an important part of building knowledge in our world today. It brings together researchers across a number of different disciplines and combines necessary information to solve problems (Repko, 2011). Without interdisciplinary research we could never solve the major problems of the world today. If we simply just focus in on the expertise of one subject, we may miss out on key information that could help us solve bigger issues at hand. In Canada and the rest of the world there are many problems that affect us on a daily basis. For this paper I have chosen to study an interdisciplinary problem that I feel is a major problem in the world today and needs our attention. The issue of world hunger is a huge concern around
In this case, the problem I am trying to solve is the issue of world hunger. Looking at the issue in the form of a research question, it would read the following: “What are the major causes of world hunger”? Now that the research question and problem is clearly stated, it is so important to understand whether or not this research question is an interdisciplinary problem. Repko states in chapter three of our textbook that in order to look at this issue with an interdisciplinary approach it must meet several criteria (Repko, 2011). That criteria is the following: must include more then two disciplines, problem must be multifaceted, is still a problem in the world today (unsolved), and will only be solved by more then one discipline (Repko, 2011). Therefore after taking a look at the topic I have chosen and the research question surrounding world hunger, I have deemed the topic of my choice to fit the requirements of being an interdisciplinary
I have listed each discipline below, and also stated a research question for each different subject.
Agriculture: “What role does agriculture and farming play in the lack of food available to those in need”?
Social Sciences: “What role does poverty play in world hunger issues, and how does it affect the daily lives of those living without food”?
Politics and Government: “What role does war and conflict play in affecting world hunger”
These three disciplines will be the foundation to helping solve the problem of world hunger for this paper. To understand the issue even further it is imperative to now gather literature and information surrounding the issue in relation to the disciplines mentioned above, and perhaps opens new doors to other disciplines that are related to solving the issue of world hunger (Repko, 2011). This will help to further map out the problem and give us a starting point when gathering
