Every day the issues of gays and lesbians is becoming more and more known and making bigger strides every year. Along with them we get to learn about bisexuals, pansexual, asexual, and any other sexuality that isn’t defended as heterosexual. However, a certain cause is tied close with this but not making as many strides or being heard as much, the issues of transgendered people. While the famous LGBTA activist organization group does involve transgendered people their voice in the movement is rather small and not heard very often. However the organization GATE - Global Action for Trans* Equality has an aim to change this and make the transgendered people known and heard in hopes to unite the many groups that want the same. They hope to one day make the world safe for those who are transgendered. This paper is going to cover what being transgendered really is, the history of this group and the groups who oppose it and where this group seems to be heading.
Children are taught there are two genders boy and girl; later on we learn these genders are tired into our genitalia also known as our sex. However, very few children are taught about ‘the boy who was born in the wrong body’ or ‘the girl who feels like a boy’ these cases deal with individuals that are call transgendered. Transgender can be defined as an individual who’s mental gender does not match the assigned sex they are given at birth. It can also be explained as one who “does not conform unambiguously to conventional notions of male or female gender.”. (Oxford Dictionary)People who deal with this can suffer from Body dimorphic disorder, or BDD. In which the individual worries about how the world perceives them as they do not fit the media stander of boy or girl. This disor...

...ondoms the killing and abuse that Trans individuals face, and actually encourages such things with signs that read “pray for dead soldiers” and “thank god for dead soldiers” referring to the new policy allowing LGTBA individuals into the army.
Organization such as GATE, LGTBA, and The Center are needed because of organization such as GodHateFags. Organizations like GATE are helping improve the life of any trans individuals making the world a safer more accepting place for them. As the years pass they hope that Identifying as transgendered or non-specific will become more normal and result in less hate and abuse. That one day they can live in an accepting world free of the fear that comes with identifying as such. Because of groups like this, groups like GodHatesFags will have less of a voice in the community. Hopefully one day groups like that will cease to exist.
The medicalization of transgender tendencies, under what was Gender Identity Disorder, was demoralizing to all transgender people. This resulted in a form of structured and institutionalized inequality that made an entire group of people internalize their problems, making them question not only their own identity, but also their sanity. Therefore, the removal of this disorder from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in 2013 and the newest editions was important in that it shows society’s recognition and acceptance of the transgender
For instance, sociologists would argue that characteristics of the male gender in a given society include independence, and dominance whereas females express more passive behavior. Gender identity, on the other hand is an individual’s sense of their gender or in other words, their sense as to whether they are feminine or masculine. Therefore, transgender is a term related to “people whose gender identity is different from the gender commonly socially assigned to them on the basis of their biological sex” (Morrow & Messinger, 2006, p. 7).“Biological theories assume that gender should be consistent with biological sex and there are only two genders and two sexes” which does not correspond to transgender people. Furthermore, transgender is also used as a general term to include people such as transsexuals and cross-dressers
Transgendered people in America have made many great strides since the 1990s. They have encountered violence, lack of health care, and the loss of homes, jobs, family and friends. There have been many phases of the struggle of being transgendered in America over the years. The current phase we must be in now is equal rights. There are many variations of discrimination against the transgendered community. In our society we simply do not like what we do not understand. It is easier to discriminate than to try and understand. We are all created different and we should appreciate our differences. The change must come by addressing the views of the public. There is much justification in the unequal rights of transgendered peoples. The Human Rights Campaign has been started to achieve equal rights for all Americans including the LGBQ community. A serious injustice is in the world of sports. Professional sports are one of societies major traditions totally based on rules and regulations that are meant to preserve the integrality of the games, but may not be inclusive to all its players.
Even though we live in a place in time where LGBT people can freely love who they want without facing consequences, there are still incidents of people being targeted just because of their sexuality or for being a support for those who are attracted to the same sex. Even at West many of the members of Spectrum have been demonized by bigots. As this still remains to be a huge issue, those in the club come together to find many ways to stand up against their bullies in a peaceful
Transgender is an umbrella term, meaning an individual’s gender-identity does not align with their assigned sex at birth. Although transgender is a protected class in eighteen states, these individuals still face discrimination within the country and around the world (“Non-Discrimination Laws”). Transgender is not a lifestyle, no one chooses to live their life constantly being discriminated against. Transgender issues should be more educated on and their lives should be more protected. The most common issue transgender individuals face every day is bathroom use.
“When trannies were growing up and coming of age-there was no place for us. We were kinda put on the fringes of society...the real safe space for us was out there on the streets” (Trans Views). OR “Gender is a universe and we are all stars” (Lacey Roop). Transgenderism can be best described as moving away from the gender assigned at birth. This can mean wearing the clothes, taking on the roles, and assuming the pronouns of a gender designated at birth, or rejecting gender entirely . Gender variance and transgenderism, although seen commonly throughout human history, are seen as unnatural and an insult to the sex that God “gave”. Many believe that sex and gender is the same thing, and therefore assume that one that is biologically female is a woman, and one that is biologically male is a man. There is a common misunderstanding that transgenderism is an expression of homosexuality, assuming that the trans person is straight. Sometimes, transgender is seen as a gender of its own, excluding transmen and transwomen from their own gender.
Transsexuals, defined simply is a person who from the very core of there being feels like they are in the wrong orientation and transgenderism is that state of being when one's gender doesn't match those feelings. In the case of transgender children they usually feel like god made a mistake and in some case scenarios boys particularly try to alleviate the situation themsel...
There is even a phrase for the assault – whether that is physical, verbal or sexual – against trans and non-binaries. This phrase is ‘trans bashing’. Trans bashing occurs when someone is beaten or assaulted for their gender identity – similar to ‘gay bashing’ when someone is assaulted for their sexuality.2 The fact that this is such a common occurrence that it even has its own term, and is relatively well known, is, quite honestly, sickening. Sadly, this is becoming more and more
A deeper look into this specific social issue shows the two sides of the story: those who want and those who oppose gender identity equality. Ultimately, it cannot be denied that laws towards transgender equality is a step forward for the LGBT community. However, lack of structure could raise serious questions with all the different solutions
Imagine going through life believing that you were born into the wrong body. This is how a transgender feels as they go through life. A transgender is a person who whose self-identity does not conform unambiguously to male or female sex. This topic is very controversial due to many arguments about the differences between the male and female physique. The natural biological differences between males and a females play a huge role in this controversy.
For most people, the idea of Transgenders is new and complicated. Because the idea is so fresh, many adults struggle with how to address this topic to the children because they lack knowledge
While the ruling of the case brings awareness of the existence of transgendered people, it is stigmatized by a dominant culture whose basis of the legal system protects proscribed gender identities rather than the protection of freedom of choosing multiple identities. Additionally, the court deemed that Pat Doe has a medical condition that requires her to wear women’s garments. The medical condition called Gender Identity Disorder speaks volumes about how society treats unrecognized differences when it comes to diagnosing a gender expression. The information of the court case allows you to get em...
Men have penis’s and women have vagina’s but it’s not that simply to those who believe they are truly a different gender than what they were born as. In Namaste’s work Transsexual, transgender, and queer we see the discrimination that transgender people face which I would have to face as well. “..Civil Status clearly stated that a male-to-female transsexual must undergo a vaginoplasty, the construction of a vagina, in order to change her name and sex.” (141) We see how it’s virtually difficult for transgender people to change their gender identities on certificates so even though they identify as male, female, or whatever the case may be, they still have to be seen as something they aren’t. Even the law is unaccepting of what human beings have the given right to do; be themselves. “State coverage paid for testicular implants in the case of a male who has lost his testicles, but did not allow for breast implants in the case of a woman who loses her breast.” (145) . In this quote, we see how transgendered women are seen as second-class citizens alongside women in general aspects. We also see how the LGBTQ community takes a stand for who they are which also shows how it would partially resolve the troubles that I would face. The LGBTQ community would be understanding of my transition from female-to-male and would offer support to me when going
Within the recent years, the transgender movement has become more apparent than ever. With television shows like “RuPaul’s Drag Race”, “Keeping It Up With Cait” and “I Am Jazz”, the voices of transgender people are more public than ever. Celebrities like Caitlyn Jenner and Laverene Cox are changing the face of the movement by showing people that it is never too late to be their true selves. American laws are acknowledging the rights of transgender people, but not in a positive way. These are just people trying to be their best selves. Transgender people deserve to have all the rights that a non transgender person has.
No one wants to feel like they do not belong or like they are not cared for. Transgender people are just like everyone else and deserve to be treated equally to cisgendered people. According to Sam Killerman, being transgendered means living "as a member of a gender other than that expected based on sex assigned at birth." This definition is extremely important because a transgender person is still a person.
