Human trafficking is an issue that has permeated every society. It has ensnared the lives of millions of men, women and children around the world. In September of 2012, President Barack Obama spoke about human trafficking, calling it modern day slavery and a “debasement of our common humanity.” He said that human trafficking should concern every community, business and nation because it “tears at our social fabric, distorts markets, endangers public health, and fuels violence and organized crime (Remarks by the President).” Human trafficking comes in many forms: sex, labor, domestic servitude, organ, and child soldiers. This paper will focus on the growing issue of sex trafficking. It will briefly look at sex trafficking at a global and national level, then it will focus on sex trafficking in California, and lastly the paper will focus on a specific organization working with survivors of sex trafficking.

This form of exploitation was found to be the greatest in Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, Europe, and Central Asia. In East Asia, South Asia and Pacific, forced labor was the greater form of explo...

...on offenses are not limited to adults and minors can be seen as prostitutes instead of victims of human trafficking. This can lead to different responses in protocols and placements for victims (California Report Card 2014). This is why some victims end up being seen as criminals instead of victims who need help. If a case goes to trial, CSEC victim-witnesses are not protected from the trauma of cross-examination trials. They are only able to have two supporters present during the trial to comfort them (California Report Card 2014). The Shared Hope International report card shows that there is still much to do with helping victims of sex trafficking in California. Thankfully, there are organizations in California that strive to bring holistic healing to survivors of sex trafficking. FACESS is one of a handful of organizations in California working with survivors.
