The purpose of this paper is to address the issue of nursing staffing ratios in the healthcare industry. This has always been a primary issue, and it continues to grow as the population rate increases throughout the years. According to Shakelle (2013), in an early study of 232,432 surgical discharges from several Pennsylvania hospitals, 4,535 patients (2%) died within 30 days of hospitalization. Shakelle (2014) also noted that during the study, there was a difference between 4:1 and 8:1 patient to nurse ratios which translates to approximately 1000 deaths for a group of that size. This issue can be significantly affected in a positive manner by increasing the nurse to patient ratio, which would result in more nurses to spread the work load of the nurses more evenly to provide better coverage and in turn result in better care of patients and a decrease in the mortality rates. The specific clinical question regarding the search for a quantitative question is as follows: Will a higher nurse to patient ratio decrease the mortality rate of discharged patients? The intervention of such a method would definitely allow nurses to balance out more time to ensure each patient is properly treated and assist to prevent work overload that leads to slight but very risky errors that lead to death. This would also allow nurses to do more observation and help to educate patients to preform proper movement to assist in recovery and prevent injury while in their care (for example, proper bending, avoid movement that could be harmful post surgery). The population is the patient amount. The direct outcome is a decreased mortality rate. A higher nurse to patient ratio would be the dependent variable. Conclusion Nurse to patient ratios are extremely paramount in assisting with overall patient mortality and wellness of our nurses. It is an issues which unfortunately affected by legislation of our government (which is affect specifically on a monetary basis). My research via Academic Search Complete allowed me to identify topics that assist my PICOT question, and enables me to further analyze and research to find out what issues directly affect is matter. Proper nurse to patient ratio, operational costs, government regulation, nurse work life and health, patient wellness, and nursing procedures and duration of those procedures are all affected by this topic and we must ensure that all are properly balanced.
