Persuasive Essay On Global Warming

The topic I selected was that of global warming. So far, I seem to want to change my thesis everyday; but this is how it stands for the moment. Americans need to work together as well as with other nations to take immediate action to reduce our environmental footprint in efforts to lesson our contribution to global warming. I feel this thesis clearly states my position, as well as the point of the paper. I still want to play around with the wording, especially at the end of it. I feel that global warming is a serious issue that should be addressed directly by, not only the U.S. but by other nations as well. While there are several groups and movements dedicated to this cause not nearly enough has been done. This is why there continues to be …show more content…

A switch to more pure energy sources should be made. Generating energy from clean sources such as wind, solar and geothermal power are all viable options. This may seem extreme, but the damage that has already been done to our environment is also extreme. We should be taking considerable measures to lessen the damage we are doing to the environment we depend on for life. If we have the technology and ability why not use it? Making the switch would initially seem like a hassle, but in the long run it will pay off immensely. A study done by the UCS in 2009 found that if an standard was put in place to be using 25 percent renewable electricity by 2025, the CO2 emissions from power plants would go down 277 million metric tons per year. An even larger difference could be made if the percentage is pushed up every time a goal is met. The secondary benefits from moving in the direction of clean energy are tremendous. Enhancing air quality will also improve the health of all of those breathing it in. The health damages from pollution related to greenhouse gases are numerous; cancer, heart attacks, breathing problems and neurological damage, those are just some we are aware of. Water sources would also be much better off without coal mining and natural gas drilling polluting …show more content…

This is a reasonable viewpoint. Especially considering the National Weather service did not begin to even begin to read and relay weather reports until 1849. In the grand scheme of how long we believe the earth to have existed this is not a huge amount of time to know the weather patterns. Despite that fact within the amount of time we have recorded the weather, the drastic changes in correlation with many human-related activities are undeniable. While the sea level has been rising over the last century, the rate at which it has been rising has doubled in the last decade according to NASA. We know this is due to two factors, melting of glaciers and the expansion of seawater as it gets warmer. Temperature has also been on an abnormal rise, getting more significant in the last 12; seeing a pattern yet? Some people brought up the point that this increase in the temperature could be caused by the sun. This theory has been thoroughly researched and disproven. As stated before, the warmest temperatures have occurred in the last 12 years. During these last twelve years solar output has declined, being at its lowest level of output between 2007 and 2009. During this low output period, surface temperatures on the earth still increased. An interesting fact is that just the top few meters of the ocean
