“Eat your vegetables, they 're good for you”, The words a kid never wants to hear. People scan food packages for whole grains and fibers, avoid sugar, and don’t even think about buying something with trans fats. Just when people thought they knew how to eat healthy, there 's another problem: Genetically Modified Organisms. Some opponents would have you believe these ingredients are the dietary curse of the decade. How concerned should people really be though? This is one of the most debated questions around the world. Many environmental organizations protest against genetic engineering, but numerous companies continue to use it in food production. The issue of Genetically Modified foods has been investigated by many different scientists for many years, but we still do not have a clear cut answer about the influences of such food on human health. Vegetables and fruits have reduced time of maturity in nearly half, crops grow faster and are more resistant to insects and diseases. As to the disadvantages of using Genetically modified foods, the researchers say that there can be many potential impacts on human health causing new diseases with a higher antibiotic resistance. Also it is a high probability of creation of new allergens and an initiation an allergy in humans. Genetically modified foods have become such an embedded part of our food system these days, but it is not difficult to think back to a time when food was simpler and healthier.

When these genes are spliced together the side effects become unpredictable. The US Food and Drug Administration does not mandate labeling of genetically modified organisms, allows companies to put their genetically modified foods onto the market without even notifying the agency, and does not even require a single safety study. The FDA justified the claim by saying that they had no information showing that genetically modified foods were substantially different. However, secret agency memos that were made public by a lawsuit show that the overwhelming consensus between the FDA’s own scientists was that genetically modified foods could create unpredictable, hard-to-detect side effects (Smith).
