ETHICS/TIMEFRAME/RESOURCES
Prose fiction writers have escaped the strict scrutiny of ethics in almost all ethics debates because the characters/subjects are not real, Gay Lynch asks in her article, “what can a writer of fiction steal: a voice, a landscape, some history , a name or a story?” (2005). The Oxford Dictionary defines ethics as the: “standards of right behaviour; moral principles”(2011), therefore according to the literature, the issue of ethics in writing fiction is a responsibility of the writer who has to understand his/her own personal ethical standards. A writer writes what they know and in writing fiction a distance is created between the author and the creative piece, I want to explore the Nigerian female’s existence and my goal in writing fiction is to create empathy and understanding in my reader’s mind through storytelling. American novelist, Jon Hansen in his lecture titled,The Ethics of Fiction Writing at the Santa Clara University said that “the first principle of the medical doctor’s Hippocratic oath is: ‘above all, do no harm’”(2007) which also applies to writers of fiction especially when a fiction piece is being created from a real memory.
Writing is a skill that requires patience and practice, Fairfax and Moat suggested that “the desire to write” (1998: 4) is the first thing a writer needs at their finger tips, the need to tell a story which means that writing starts with the writer from their “imagination, personality and interests” (Hamand 2009: 9). I don’t require financial resources to complete this project, my basic tools are: lots of pens and paper, notepad, laptop/computer, internet for research, writing magazines for guide and support and finally the dictionary and thesaurus because, Fairfax an...

“54% (272) had experienced some form of workplace sexual harassment.” (“Statistics”) More than 200 of those victims that experienced the sexual harassment were women. Women are often found with a more strict dress code in society compared to men. In “The Undress Code” by Bonnie Tsui, she addresses the issue of how men look at women depending on what they wear in different environments. This awkward anecdote reveals how a female in the situation of where her previous co-worker has been hitting on her and she doesn’t know the reason why exactly. While Bonnie Tsui’s “ The Undress Code” acknowledges that clothing choices have an effect on relationships between opposite sexes, females should not be forced to keep the “balance” within society. As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
Writing doesn’t come easily to me, which must make me a glutton for punishment. It has taken me years of training, learning to structure an essay and unlearning to begin again. Only since attending HSU am I realizing how exceptional my writing has become. Over the course of two semesters, I have seen my writing expand and grow. While I still adhere to the training I received in high school, I am excited to now take these tools and develop my own unique style in the years to come.
Writing can be a very difficult process for those who do not know how to go about constructing
The ability to write well is not a naturally acquired skill; it is usually learned or culturally transmitted as a set of practices in formal instructional settings or other environments. Writing skills must be practiced and learned through experience. Writing also involves composing, which implies the ability either to tell or retell pieces of information in the form of narratives or description, or to transform information into new texts, as in expository or argumentative writing. Perhaps it is best viewed as a continuum of activities that range from the more mechanical or formal aspects of “writing down” on the one end, to the more complex act of composing on the other end (Omaggio Hadley, 1993). It is undoubtedly the act of
In the twelve years I was in school, I learn three forms of writing, essay, letters, and stories. My favorite form of writing is creative writing. My least favorite is writing a letter. The reason I prefer creative writing over the other, form is because I have the freedom to make up anything. The reason I dislike writing letter is because many letters have different formats. For example, I can’t uses the friendly letter format on a business letter; I would have to use block format. Even though I prefer creative writing, my most commonly used skill is to write essays. Though, I may find essay writing a chore, I still prefer it over letter writing. Among these books I still read The Odyssey and Macbeth, for inspiration.
Have you ever read a novel that was so appealing that it left you with the interest of writing something similar? Writing a novel is a time-consuming process that requires patience, knowledge and a certain language. However, not all writers known today were born with natural talents. In fact, many had to work on their skills in order to succeed. Although it could be difficult to come up with an idea and express it in words, writing can be easier if you followed certain steps, such as writing a plot, building the characters and making it plausible to anyone who reads it.
