10. Islam is a religion mandated primarily by the teachings of the Qur’an. Muslims considered Muhammad the final messenger sent by God to humanity. When Muhammad received the revelations of the Qur’an, his life became an example for many people to follow. In the Qur’an are the essential teachings of Islam that are related to muslim worship practice. The five pillars of basic practice are 1.Shahadah (the declaration of faith), 2.Salat ( the daily prayer), 3.Zakat (almsgiving), 4.Sawm (fasting during the month of Ramadan) 5.Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) (Brodd, 480) All five pillars were equally important and were done by individuals of the Islamic religion.
The first pillar, Shahadah, is the basic believe of Islam. It simply states that, “There is no God but God and Muhammad is his prophet.” It is the goal for individuals to commit themselves to achieve the objectives of Islam through Muhammad and the Qur’an. It is the declaration of faith that should be said with respect and sincerity that allows muslims to convert to Islam.

They did not have to attend a mosque (place designated for prayer) to pray. In fact prayer could be done anywhere. It is the salat (daily prayer), that should be recited five times a day.
The third pillar, Zakat, is the means of purifying their property. “Muslims believe that they are meant to share their wealth with those less fortunate in their community of believers.” (Lewis) Islam exemplified the belief of distribution among the poor and the importance of the Muslim community through this act.

...t point to note about the five pillars, is that they aim to put their faith into action and practice. Islam regards it to be pointless if you preach faith but not demonstrate it. They put their faith first that allows them to work together as a collective strategy of religious practice. However these pillars should be used to build personality and a strong faithful society. If an individual practices empty ritual without the Empty rituals mean nothing and I believe it is on the individual to build upon their personality and contribute to their society while practicing rituals and worship. Therefore the five pillars of Islam work as long as the individual is devoted to excel in their personal dealings and wait of life. If they are able to strengthen their personal conduct are they able to build a society characterized with human equality, sharing, respect and justice.

- In June 2016, an LGBT night club in Orlando, Florida was brutally attacked by armed gunman. On that night, forty nine club-goers were devastatingly shot and murdered. According to CNN, authorities claimed it was the nation’s worst terror attack since 9/11. Not only was this a deeply devastating act of hate, but also possibly an act of religious conflict. It has been reported that the shooter was of Islamic faith, and has formerly pledged his allegiance to ISIS. In his religion, being gay is a punishable sin....   [tags: Islam, Religion, God, LGBT]

Islam Is An Interesting Religion Essay

- Islam is an interesting religion, one that has been targeted with constant negative thinking due to its “over-religiosity” more than any other major religion. Bayat has a great analysis that brushes over important aspects of the Muslim and the outside world. He starts off by questioning the “Muslim societies” label and goes on by stating that calling these societies Muslim is implying that religion is the “defining characteristic of these structures.” Even the words “Islamic world/society” imply that Islam is the “central factor that shapes the dynamics of these societies.” Those words become a generality not created by them, and “tells how others imagine what Muslims are and even how they s...   [tags: Islam, Religion, Muhammad, Christianity]

Christianity and Islam are two out of the 4,200 religions that give people a sense of beliefs and what it means to be human. They are also two of the most popular religions. Islam : Religion Of Violence Essay

- Islam: Religion of Violence. After the events of September 11, 2001 which were attributed to Islamic extremists, many Americans reacted in anger and fear, suspicious that Muslims had started a holy war and were planning to destroy the country. Ignorance about the Islamic religion, often sensationalized in the media, intensified this idea. Small excerpts taken from the Qur’an were repeated over and over in the news media. Considering that the word “Islam” is translated from Arabic to mean peace, a more comprehensive knowledge of the religion would prove to alleviate the sense of fear concerning Muslims and the Islamic religion....   [tags: Islam, Muhammad, Qur'an, Muslim]

Essay on The Islam Religion

- In this day and age, the Islam religion expands over the majority of Northern Africa, and the Middle East. It has a strong influence in these areas, and a number of different Islam groups and denominations are in these areas. In this essay, it will be evaluated whether or not the use of the term ‘Islamism’ can be used for all of these movements/groups. Furthermore the essay will distinguish between violent and non-violent Islamist groups in a structured way. Roger explains these groups must either make Islam more modern to work alongside the West in democracy, or they must defend culture in their religion by creating a ‘protective umbrella’ (Roger, 2004, p158)....   [tags: Middle East, Northern Africa, religon]
