Is Virtual work beneficial or a hindrance in today’s society? A virtual worker is one who connects and interacts digitally, rather than having a physical office. To help determine the effectiveness of virtual teams, Elliott Enyedy, the Regional Controller of Eurest Dining Services, is interviewed to shed light on the pros and cons of being part of a virtual team. Elliott is the perfect example of a typical virtual worker, he work mostly from home except for when he needs to go to an account to meets with clients or other co-workers. Although many people have mixed opinions about virtual work; nevertheless, if one has a good understanding of the team process, virtual work can be very effective, but only with the use of good communication and
Elliott shares good communication amongst his team, which allows for great success. He shares good communication by being virtual. He does not always have co-workers coming into his office asking questions, which can be nice when he is trying to get work done; However it is also bad because most of his communication is done through the phone so there can be a lot of phone tag. As a result, this can make the communication more asynchronous rather than synchronous because someone is waiting on a response and the response or answer is not always given right away. Another point he mentions, is that not being in the office does not allow him to see his workers, so he has to trust that even though he does not see them they are actually doing their work. As the leader, he shares that he always keeps open lines of communication with his district managers in order to answer any questions to make sure they are on task. Although a lot of their work is done virtually, they do meet up once in awhile to have face-to-face meetings, which allows everyone to establish their goals and to communicate how everything is going, as well as what everybody’s roles are going to be in tackling their goals. Virtually working means using technology to help aid in the communicating process and making the team
Virtualization is a technology that creates an abstract version of a complete operating environment including a processor, memory, storage, network links, and a display entirely in software. Because the resulting runtime environment is completely software based, the software produces what’s called a virtual computer or a virtual machine (M.O., 2012). To simplify, virtualization is the process of running multiple virtual machines on a single physical machine. The virtual machines share the resources of one physical computer, and each virtual machine is its own environment.
According to the authors, a virtual team worker is more likely than the collocated worker to suffer from feelings of isolation if the set-up is not right, and they need to be more self-managing and focus their efforts in a particular way.
The confidence came from Keller’s presence. His long history with the company his respect for coworkers and his reputation as a successful problem solver almost certainly reassured employees that a turnaround could happen. Second, team members must appreciate one another’s perspectives and refrain from blaming one another for problems they may encounter. Before Jimenez’s team-based productivity project, the engineers and the operations workers at the Wichita site neither understood nor appreciated the other side’s contributions. Jimenez and Keller set up the monthly meetings to discuss problems and resolve them.

Actors should take benefits of emerging electronic and telematics technologies which can be used in addition to face-to-face dialogue. Thus, technology is a support mechanism and not a substitute for personal contact. Dialogue is fundamental to build relationships and organisational learning, involves process of inner-reflection, through the sharing of experiences, and enabling one to understand one’s practice. Actors who reflect on their experience can develop their competences and an ability to deal with challenges or new
The methods of communicating for a virtual team consist of different tools than used by a traditional team because “…awareness of others’ activities is more difficult and requires some degree of technological intervention” (Fussell et.al., 1998, p. 276). A virtual team needs to use alternative tools because it has members working from different geographical areas and possibly at different times. A traditional team meets face to face, whereas a virtual team needs the use of technology to operate and interact efficiently. Teleconferencing, video conferencing, faxing, e-mail, and instant messaging are some of the tools available to a virtual team.
Fred Luthans writes, “The behaviors that occur in an organization are vital to the communication process.” (Luthans, 2011, pg. 249) She will need to be able to communicate effectively with her employees. She will need to follow-up with her employees to make sure they understand what she said. She will want to have an open communication channel with her employees. Additionally, Jill can create an open door relationship with her employees where her employees can come to her with their problems and she will do her best to help them solve their problems. Jill will want to give feedback to her employees and ask for feedback from her employees. When I first started in management, I informed my employees I was always there to talk to them. If they came to with a question that I did not know the answer, I would make a point to find the answer and get back with them in a reasonable amount of time. Jill would benefit from having an interactive communication with her employees. Interactive communication will give the employees the chance to have a say and can help build a stronger relationship between Jill and her employees. The interactive communication would generate varying ideas that Jill might not have thought of to use. Interactive communication can be used to “task coordinate, problem solve, information sharing, and conflict resolution”. (Luthans, 2011, pg. 258) This type of communication is an active process that causes the people in the group to be active in the on-going conversation with each other and discuss things with one
The good and bad of telecommuting Telecommuting may be the movement of the future, which will allow more people to work away from the office. Many people see telecommuting as a way to be close to home or allow them to be connected to their organization while working abroad. While telecommuting might work for some people, telecommuting is not for everyone. There are many disadvantages as well advantages to telecommuting which most people do not take into account. When considering telecommuting, the advantages fall for both employer and employee.
The workplace today goes beyond just the walls and ceilings that surround an office environment or office building. According to the International Telework Association and Council, 44.4 million Americans worked from home at least part of the time in 2004, up 7.5% from just on year earlier (Earthweb, 2005). Though it may be very convenient to work from home, the choice can bring its own set of problems. There are financial reasons, efficiencies, and even managing time are just a few to name that bring about many challenges and issues that any remote employee would face in that type of work environment.
Virtual corporations have some major characteristics (Judith, 2002, quoted in Byrne. n.d.) as following state: technology, excellence, opportunism, trust and no borders. Technology makes distance no longer a problem while entrepreneurs or companies far away from, due to the computer networks link people all over the world. Excellence was showed by each partner bringing its core competencies to the corporation, which can exert all advantages. Companies make alliances for specific market opportunity and this is a more efficiency work way than any others. Members in a virtual organization must trust their partners due to they meet the need by cooperating. The new communication ways were brought by computer networks, which blur the traditional hierarchies and boundaries.
Teamwork and social skills are the cornerstone of functioning effectively in a business driven environment because businesses require networking and interpersonal communication skills with another individual. At times, meeting face to face is not applicable so online means of communication must be used. However, we, as human beings, are susceptible to misinterpreting information if all the details are not clearly explained. Misinterpreting information can lead to a decrease in overall productivity. As Chuck Martin declares in his article “The Importance of Face-to-Face Communication at Work”, “A global survey shows that 67 percent of senior executives and managers say their organization would be more productive if their superiors communicated more often by personal discussion. While they desire more personal discussion from their superiors, however, the top personal method of communicating for these same business leaders is e-mail, based on the survey by NFI Research.” The survey shows that even senior executives value personal communication as it can shed light on confusing scenarios and difficult obstacles. Delving deeper into the second part of the quotation, we can see a power play that is placed on the senior executives by their superiors using technology and online communication. The only way to
Virtual teams consist of individuals who are separated by distances and connected through computer technology to allow people to communicate online to achieve a common goal and are helpful when employees need to connect with each other and are located in different places.
Virtual teams are growing in high demand because of these positive aspects: cost savings: this creates affordability for the virtual teams. The organizations are able to reduce the cost of property expenses, office space rentals and travel. Many organizations outsource their operations to lower production cost also decreases with the reduced raw material cost, operational costs and lower wages of the employees in these geographic locations. Another being, new opportunities: as many opportunities arise from these growing virtual efforts. These opportunities are created for people who are less mobile and are not able to relocate due to several reason whether it be family requirements or physical challenges. It also, gives many others who cannot physically be present in person but can still support the organization
With the rise of mobile working whereby companies employ from different regions without necessarily having employees enclosed in one building, they end up employing more skilled and qualified workers regardless of their location. This has been made possible by companies embracing virtual meetings and video conferencing where managers and
Reach to Customer : Office work environment limits an employee to the office only. In today's world there are lot of jobs specially consulting or outsourcing jobs requires deep understanding of customer processes , which one cannot get just by reading document or talking to delegated people. It is always better for a consultant to actually reach out and get to know actual situation, there won't be a third opinion involved since any type of narration whether written oral has to subjective. Thus for those job this virtual environment model suits very well.
