There are movies, TV shows and songs in popular culture that portray the world of prostitution as blissful sex, money, drugs, alcohol and endless partying. Not only are prostitutes mocked and ridiculed for their job by society, but they are also dehumanized and neglected. Prior to working on the streets, most prostitutes have been taken advantage of, brainwashed and groomed for the occupation. Many believe that prostitution is a choice. Contrary to the popular belief, we find the cruel reality where nearly all prostituted women lack the luxury of choosing to engage in the business, but rather have been forced or coerced against their will.
The average age of entry into prostitution, in the United States, is between 12 and 14 years old. Most of the prostituted individuals represent cases of human trafficking. Pimps and traffickers are notorious for their use of deceptive behaviors and promises to lure children and young people into the industry. Despite of the force and coercion, prostitutes are the ones facing the consequences of the reckless actions and desires of others. It is evident that the prosecution disproportionately affects those it should protect.

These startling statistics depict the vulnerability and abuse these individuals are experiencing. Their pimps have conditioned them to despise and fear law enforcement. This study examines the research that initially began on October 28, 2000 and spanned through to October 31, 2009. If a human trafficking case occurred in the US, with the victim being under the age of 18, and at least one arrested, indicted or convicted felon, their case would be filed in the data analysis report. This research resulted in the finding of 115 separate incidents of human trafficking, involving at least 153 victims and 215 felons or perpetrators, 117 (53.4%) of them being convicted of their heinous actions. In this modern age there are several classes of prostitutes with several methods of finding work, but they still face violence in their business. Though prostitutes are frowned upon by society and treated as criminals, under the law they should not be scrutinized by the morals of the people. Prostitutes frequently feel they have no options due to their illegal work, should they be assaulted they cannot turn to the police since many officers refuse to aid them as criminals. Prostitution should be regulated to fight human trafficking, increase quality of life for the women working in the industry, and generate taxes for the government while reducing the cost of dealing with prostitution.
According to Rijken (2009) any activity that involves the recruitment, transportation, or receipt of a person using coercive or deceptive means with the intent of exploitation is defined as Human Trafficking. There are 12.3 million victims of human trafficking worldwide at any given moment (Hepburn & Simon, 2010; Nack, 2009). Statistics show that 43% are forced into the sex trade, 32% are used in forced labor, and the remaining 25% are trafficked for mixed or undetermined reasons (Hepburn & Simon, 2010). In the United States alone, 15-18,000 women, children, and men are trafficked annually. People of all genders, races, and ages are at risk of becoming victims of human trafficking. We can’t simply prosecute our way to social justice. Of course people who exploit people should be punished. But definitions of trafficking often cast a wide net, encompassing all sex workers. While law enforcement has the biggest role to play, the quest to end modern slavery must have other champions. Forced labor and sex trafficking is the second most profitable criminal enterprise, and the fastest growing. Yet the level of awareness within the United States is not commensurate. To truly confront this most egregious of crimes, civil society must be a lead proponent. Human Trafficking is a universal issue that is still currently happening today. It is a major crime that essentially lets someone take illegal custody of another human’s rights and freedoms. The impacts of human trafficking are crucial and nerve-racking. Victims of such crimes most likely suffer from injuries physically and mentally, abusive behavior, rape, death threats, and life taking.
