The United States of America, as stated by their founding fathers and modern inhabitants, is said to be a country based on freedom and safety. Every man, woman, and child who lives within shall be allowed by their God given rights to live a prosperous life with equal opportunities. If this is true, the choice to own and use a gun shall be given to them as well. Many responsible civilians operate, carry, use, and manufacture weaponry every day in a manor that does not conflict with other people in a negative way. It would be an almost perfect society people would live in if this were true for every person who came upon a weapon to act in such a manor. This law, especially concerning the possession of a firearm in a school zone or other public area, is very controversial within the United States and used to be questioned. Many pro-gun supporters and extremist say that this law infringes on the second amendment and the right that every person who is legally able to carry and use gun would not use one in such an environment unless needed. Many of the supporters used the Supreme Case Parker v. The District of Colombia to help persuade America that the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, and that the safety and self-protection of the people reside within the ability and choice to own a weapon (Acosta). Once the Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and other school shootings occurred, the eyes and views of a majority of the nation decided that the freedom to carry a weapon in such an area is not worth risking the safety of human life. A human’s right to something can sometimes be judged based on the type of civilization they live in. It is important that the right to do something does not interfere with those who were given the same rights. One must understand that living together as a race is more efficient and enjoyable, but freedoms and rights must be restricted from the society as a whole to protect them from extreme cases of danger. …show more content…

It seems that the expansion of weaponry has created many more possibilities of destruction and death to those who choose to misuse firearms and explosives. The evolution of weaponry has created many types of weapons that are unnecessary for self-protection and hunting. Some would even say that these inventions and add ons were specifically created to kill with intent to inflict pain and kill mass amounts of people. Our current federal law states that any person who knowingly possesses or manufactures a firearm of one of these types may be punishable of up to 5 years: fully automatic, silencer, sawed off shotgun/rifle, destructive device, semi automatic assault rifle manufactured after October 1, 1993, or any firearm that lacks a serial number or identification (“QUICK REFERENCE...”). All of these weapons have been proved to be more harmful than useful or unnecessary in a self defense or a hunting situation. Many pro-gun supporters have stated that it is their right to use these weapons and that the second amendment states so (Acosta).
