In early adolescence, many children fantasize about being princes and princesses fighting malicious villains in faraway, majestic lands where the charming young, noble always saves the day, and he and the beautiful princess live happily-ever-after. As time maturates, however, those fictional professions develop into dreams of future career choices such as firefighters, doctors, police officers, and more. All of which possess a distinct characteristic, these job choices allow those once native and innocence children to help and save lives in the real world. Although law enforcement is a heroic and well-respected profession, professional that dedicate their livelihoods to the study and biological use of medicine deserve more notability and recognition because of the longitudinal timeframe it takes to earn a medical …show more content…
In order to be a successful and licensed doctor, there are three main components a medical student must accomplish and excel at. These educational components are achieving a four to five year bachelor’s degree that meets the medical school admission requirements, four years of med school itself, and then three to seven years of residency (“Time for Medical School”). According to the Peterson staff’s online article, “The road to becoming a doctor takes 11 to 16 years, and you’ll be at least thirty before you’re ready to start your own practice.” Conversely, the average length of time taken to complete academy training to become a police officer is nineteen weeks, conferred by the Bureau of Justice Statistics; although one of the most perplex police departments, the Memphis Police Department, requires a minimum of fifty-four hours of college credits (Parker). Evidently, the educational process and interval of time to become a law enforcement officer is mediocre compared to the process of becoming a
Every little kid has high expectations for what they want to be when they grow up. Some dream of becoming president of the United States of America, or becoming an Astronaut, a lot of little kid ’s say that they want to be a Doctor. What kids do not understand is that there are many types of doctors, like an orthopedic surgeon, who works with feet, or an oral surgeon, who works with the mouth. Another similarity to a doctor is a nurse practitioner.
The road to gaining admission to medical school and becoming a physician is long, difficult, and intensely competitive. Once admitted, however, medical students spend the first two years primarily in laboratories and classrooms learning basic medical sciences. They also learn how to take medical histories, perform complete physical examinations, and recognize symptoms of diseases. During their third and fourth years, the medical students work under supervision at teaching hospitals and clinics. Following medical school, new physicians must complete a year of internship that emphasizes either general medical practice or one specific specialty and provides clinical experience in various hospital services. Physicians then continue in residency training, which lasts an additional three to six years, depending on the specialty. Immediately after residency, they are eligible to take an examination to earn board certification in their chosen specialty. Most traditional specialties include the following: anesthesiologist, cardiologist, dermatologist, family practitioner, gastroenterologist, internist, neurologist, oncologist, pathologist, psychiatrist, pulmonologist, and urologist
I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. He explained that a career in the medical field was about responsibility, the responsibility to work with all members of the healthcare team for the well-being of the patient as well as their family

7th grade brought opportunity to discover more about medicine. Mrs. Barrett asked us to research an interesting careers. I picked pediatrics. I chose to tap into a first-hand experience by sitting down with Dr. Wayne. Every patient to him was like solving a Scooby Doo mystery. Sick kids were so young that, they could not always tell what was going on and parents were also at a loss for words. However, often times there were hints as to the illness. Arriving at a
As a student that is currently seeking a career in the medical professions, I have had to routinely contemplate my reasons for pursuing such an extensive education program in a field that is constantly demanding excessive time and effort. I know of students—many friends and acquaintances of mine included—that have the most sure-fire, inspirational stories that align with their desire to become doctors, surgeons, physician assistants, etc. They always seemed to have a story that emphasized their desire to “give back” what they have received from the medical community. Because of that, ever since the beginning of high school, I have been trying to find an extraordinary reason, a purpose for my medical pursuits. Perhaps I could justify my passion for
At thirteen I left my home in sunny Miami, Florida to attend a boarding school in snowy Milwaukee, Wisconsin. During those four years I learned to be independent, and to work effectively with my peers. One year, a group of students and I began to visit patients every
A documentary Doctors ' Diaries produced real-life stories of seven first-year medical students from Harvard University. The film shows emotions and mental stress that goes through medical students while becoming a doctor and how it affects them. Medical students choose medicine or pre-med as a career to help save people, but the challenges interns interfere with are their personal life and education. At first, the interns were excited about their future and then over time they became tired and damage in certain ways; Tom Tarter was one of the interns that had to go through their medical education, internship, and family life at 21 years old.
The biggest problem with being a first generation child is living with idea that your parents sacrifice isn’t wasted on your unwillingness to see their dreams come true. Becoming a doctor, lawyer, or an engineer isn’t your dream or goal, it’s theirs’s. As a child growing up, I was pushed towards a medical route by my father, as he had high hopes of me becoming a big name doctor. With the idea of medicine in mind, I really had no idea in what direction I wanted to go. The possibilities of what I wanted to do in life in regards to medicine were endless. So I started to turn towards TV and one of the most influential shows that got me into what I wanted to do is the show Dexter. Dexter’s field of work was not exactly what I had in mind, but it led me to focus on Forensic Science. With a little extra research I found a job that I had my eyes set on, and that was becoming a Medical Examiner.
Many people in this world want to make a difference in life. However, most people do not want to put in all the effort that it takes to do so. The job of a pediatrician is life-changing to many. Unfortunately, it takes drive and effort that many people do not have, to become a pediatrician. A pediatrician’s job is a highly-skilled and interesting job because he or she has the privilege to deal with and help as many children as possible.
Most kids always dream that one day, they will become a doctor. As they grow older, however, they realize exactly how much hard work is put into the job. The life of a surgeon is not easy, as it requires patience and dedication every single day. From standing on their feet for twelve or more hours at a time to the inconsistent sleep schedule, being a surgeon can be taxing in every aspect of life. However, surgeons gain the opportunity to help people from all over the country and make an impact in the medical world. The surgical field is definitely not for everyone, but for those who are willing to put in the hard work, perseverance, and dedication it takes to get through college, medical school, and other various exams, it will soon become a very rewarding job, getting the opportunity to make a permanent difference in peoples’ lives.
My career choice is to become a pediatrician. The question is: what makes this job so interesting or fantastic enough to be chosen? This job requires many sacrifices, skills, and strengths to endeavor the obstacles on the way to the goal. This particular job is also a very honorable and noble job in the sense of helping children with their illnesses and ailments. Personally, I love children and I’m always fascinated by their actions and interesting techniques of expressing themselves. Since I am intrigued by the children’s personality I love spending time with them (and that’s why their child-like ways rub off on me). Thus, I believe that my own childish personality and my love of children will motivate me in the near future to help them out with their medical needs. Also, being a pediatrician and helping out children has its own rewards. Not only will I be doing something I enjoy, but I will be getting paid a generous price as well. A pediatrician’s salary is not the highest one compared to surgeons or cardiologists, but it’s enough to have a life that is something more than simply satisfying. Another good aspect of this job is that they only focus on the health of children rather than all of the age groups. An adult and a child are so different they are nearly two different species. If a child is brought to a doctor who specializes in all age groups, the child would not be getting the same kind of attention that he or she would be getting, compared to that from a doctor who specializes only in children. Doctors that specialize in all age groups are used to make quick, rough, and fundamental actions need for the healing of the patient. One does not simply treat a child the same way an adult would be treated. The child would becom...
Primum non nocere. First, do no harm. One of the most important duties of a physician is to abide by this maxim. This has been and will continue to be the statement I hold most dear to me. Unfortunately, not all doctors respect and obey this critical rule. My perspective changed rather quickly during my sophomore year in high school.
Doctors are generally known to diagnose, treat, and advise patients with illnesses, diseases, or injuries. Ever since the young age of three, I have always wanted to be a doctor. My mom told me I walked up to people and told them to call me Doctor Miracle because I was going to have a shiny white coat and a stethoscope, and treat every sick person I saw. I enjoyed watching health related programs and would ask my parents to buy me medical-related books and toys. As I progressed in school and maturity, my love for medicine further blossomed. I would like to be a doctor and specialize in cardiac surgery in future. A cardiac surgeon is a doctor who specializes in treating illnesses, diseases and injuries related to the heart through operations (Physicians and Surgeons).
The one question you hear all the time as a little kid is “what do you want to be when you grow up.” Most children give the same three answers: doctor, lawyer, or astronaut. In today’s world only the elite will ever have a chance of receiving such an astounding career opportunity.
