A professional cook and award-winning cookbook author, Mark Bittman, in his article, “Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?”, which was published by the New York Times, he discusses and persuades his readers to cook a meal is indeed cheaper than buying fast food. Bittman purpose of this article is to explain the advantages of cooking at home and “the truth behind fast food”, such as it is not healthier and it is more expensive. The author does that by using logos, pathos, and ethos to help create an aggressive tone and support his claims that fast food is not good for you.
One of the first arguments that are made in the article by the author is that we, as a society feel that fast food is cheaper vs going to a local supermarket and making a home cooked meal. The author states that many Americans are overweight because we choose fast food over a home cooked meal (Bittman, 2011, p. 660). He goes on to state that many individuals who are overweight are a direct correlation with their income (Bittman, 2011, p. 660). The title of the article is part of his argument, “Is Junk Food Really Cheaper”, which he goes on to talk about if a family of four was to eat at McDonald’s and the price for the family to eat. The text reads, “…two Big Macs, a cheeseburger, six chicken McNuggets, two medium and two small fries, and two medium and two small sodas…” totals out to be $27.89. (Bittman, 2011, p. 660; 662). Then he compares going to a supermarket and buying “…roasted chicken with vegetables…simple salad, and milk…will feed four or even six people” and its total comes out to be 13.78 (Bittman, 2011, p. 660;662).

Mark Bittman in his article, “Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?” effectively persuaded the readers, his audience, that fast food isn’t healthy or cheaper than cooking a home cooked meal and if you choose to eat fast food it shouldn’t be a regular habit. He compared how children feel about tobacco and how they’ve been taught that tobacco will kill you and it’s bad for you is how parents should teach their child about junk food. That junk food is bad for you, it’s not healthy, and it could lead to problems that could be deadly such as obesity. (Bittman, 2011, p. 663).
