The concept of representation and of how information is produced and submitted appealingly to an audience is essential to any written, visual or verbal text. Iconic, symbolic and indexical forms of representation when combined with preconceived ideas of particular subject matter assist in the forming of either negative or positive reactions with regards to a text. This paper examines the attached text and provides a critical reading of the strategies used to promote the ideas raised in the text and why such ideas are relevant. Issues raised include the premise of autonomous thought and the influence of technology as a form of human conditioning. The way in which the text uses both visual and verbal signs coupled with stereotypes commonly associated with the area of philosophy to promote these issues will also be analysed.
Any one text can provide its reader with a multitude of signs that need to be interpreted in order for the text's meaning to be fully understood. Quite often texts hold several meanings and each individual reading will take away with it a totally independent reading, unless there has been collaboration with others during interpretation. It is this point that makes the relationship between images and words so powerful. A group of people faced with the exact same formation of both words and images will invariably come away from a reading with slightly conflicting opinions on what was being presented. The central concept conveyed by the text remains fixed but due to different levels of intellect, social conditioning and ideological positions, altered interpretations will be apparent. Numerous intellectuals have debated on the effects that typography has on the mind. An example of two such intellectuals are Walter Ong and Neil Postman. People all around agree that technology is changing how we think, but is it changing us for the better? Clive Thompson definitely thinks so and this book is his collection of why that is. As an avid fiction reader I wasn’t sure this book would captivate me, but the 352 pages seemingly flew past me. The book is a whirlwind of interesting ideas, captivating people, and fascinating thoughts on how technology is changing how we work and think.
How is this theory that art imitates life, and life imitates art, applicable? Having this theory in mind while reading a text creates awareness that the art is imitating a larger cultural belief. In today's world, technology is constantly changing from a new paperclip to an improvement in hospital machinery. Technology lets people improve the way they live so that they can preserve their own personal energy and focus on the really important factors in life. Some people focus their energy on making new innovations to improve transportation and the health of people that may save lives and some people focus on making new designs of packaging CDS. Technology is significant in everyone's life because it rapidly changes what is in the market. But, some new innovations of technology are ridiculous because they serve no purpose in helping mankind.
Even though, the arguments put forth by the author are relevant to the central theme, they lack clarity. He tends to go off on tangents and loses the flow of the article. It seems that the author has a slight bias against our generation’s obsession with technology, but that can be attributed to him being a quinquagenarian. I feel that the author has not covered the topic thoroughly enough. He has not quite explained the topic in depth or covered it from various perspectives.

You may be wondering how visual art is used to influence the public and prevent the spread of misinformation among a population. In this paper, I will first address the modes of access in order to better understand how to use the same methods in art-making to counter the heighten fear grown from artificial sources and to see if progress is possible. Mirroring methods used in advertising, the media spread information as if it is packaged, a commodity. An extreme, open-ended headline invites doubt into your head. A typical headline reads, “Are you and your family at risk?”, “The Top Ten Things Women Must Know to Keep Safe”, or “Ammo on Airplanes”. The headline is accompanied by a strong visual image; emphasis and contrast as principles of design are employed. The image and the headline stay with you, especially in the current multitask-oriented culture where viewer attention is hard to obtain and keep. Combine this with the juiciest partial details and placement; the image has the power to pull the viewer into an article or a news story. We, the viewers, remember what we see more than what is said or cited. The more graphic and extreme the image, the more likely the image becomes part of our memory. We store the imagery and then can use it later on- pulling up the image as proof in our minds. This exemplifies the availability heuristic, a cognitive bias in which a person relies upon what can easily be remembered rather than complete data.

In the essay “Ways of Seeing” written by John Berger, Mr. Berger makes his attempt to inform an audience with an academic background that there is a subjective way that we see things all around us every day and based on our previous experiences, knowledge, and other things that occur in our lives, no two people may see or interpret something in the same way. In the essay Mr. Berger uses art as his platform to discuss that we should be careful about how people look at things. Mr. Berger uses rhetorical strategies such as ethos, pathos, and logos. These rhetorical strategies can really help an author of any novel, essay, or any literature to truly get the information they desire across to the audience in a clear and concise manner.
How many of us in our busy lives stop and really examine the countless advertisements placed in front of us? Being something available to all students for viewing, the communication employed by the advertisement is cunning and deceptive. The appeal to ethics in the Ben and Jerry's "brownies that do good" advertisement is simple tactic to distract the viewer. David Wall in "It Is and It Isn't" refers to this as a social assumption which builds off of cultural expectations. There are countless concealed messages and symbols within the Ben and Jerry's advertisement that contain these social assumptions and require closer examination of content.
The battle for superiority and dominance between words and images is long and on-going. Both can be found everywhere, mostly in books, magazines, television, paintings, and movies. However, in more recent years, the dominance of images over words can be seen. In a world where better, faster, and easier communication is necessary, images are a far better option than words. Mitchell Stephens in “By Means of the Visible: A Picture’s Worth,” Ward Churchill in “Crimes Against Humanity,” and the director of Within These Walls, Mike Robe, concur that images such as gestures, symbols, and pictures have a widespread and profound influence. In truth, “painting is much more eloquent than speech, and often penetrates more deeply into one’s heart” (Stephens 473). Thus, images are more powerful than words because they communicate more clearly and concisely, cater for a wider and more diverse audience, and connect with people on a deeper level.
Theories of Communications, is a course that allowed me to further gain a far better perspective and has also broadened my understanding and knowledge of some of the major theories. I appreciate the fact, that during the course of the semester, this class really did an admirable job introducing me to a variety of well known and widely studied theories in the communication feild. One of the biggest things I took out of this class, was how the class impled me to learn how to apply some of the theories to my life in a practical way through some of the class activities, readings, group work, presentations, and assignments. In the following paper, there will be three main things I will be covering. I will start off by introducing all members of my family, and describing a little bit about them individually. I will then be talking about the five theories I selected that I can applyto myself and my family. I will then describe each of the five theories, give an example of my own families experiance that aplies to the theories, and give an analysis of the experiance using the theory. And lastly, I will share with you my conclucion, which will conclude basically all of the things that I learned through writing this paper.
