Frankenstein was written by Mary Shelley and is a gothic horror. It is an important book because it tells us about when scientists and doctors started to experiment with bringing back the dead. I will look at arguments for both sides of the question. This is an important question because there is a strong argument for both sides and in a lot of modern films about him he is portrayed as a villain who like nothing more than killing and lightening.
Mary Shelley wrote ‘Frankenstein’ also known as ‘The Modern Prometheus’ in 1818, when she was seventeen. Shelley was born in 1797 and married Percy Bysshe in 1816. Shelley’s husband died in 1822 aged twenty-nine, Shelley died in 1851 aged fifty-four. Shelly was raised by her father, her mother died when she was just ten days old. Her mother was a famous feminist writer and philosopher, her father was an anarchist philosopher, atheist and journalist. Shelley had an excellent education when she was eleven.
Frankenstein describes all the bad things that he doesn’t like about his creation when it first comes to life, ‘yellow skin scarcely covered the work of his muscles’, ‘watery eyes’ and ‘straight black lips’. These things all explain things that most people would consider ugly and unpleasant in a person or creature. Frankenstein also thinks of his creation as a monster and wonders what, he feels is, a terrible thing he has done, ‘rain pattered dismally’ refers to the awful way Frankenstein felt when the creature came to life, Frankenstein felt as though he had done a terrible thing and that what he had created should be destroyed, ‘the wretch, the miserable monster whom I had created’ also refers to the way Frankenstein felt about his creation and what he sees it as. Frankenstein’s Monsters first experiences of life are confusing to him as his vision is blurry and his senses are not very good, almost like an infant, ‘dark, opaque bodies’, ‘oppressive light’, and ‘tormented by hunger and thirst’ all describe what the creature was going through and tells us that he is like a young child, who can’t get food for themselves and is adverse from bright direct light.

I believe Frankenstein is a villain in this book. I believe he promotes the idea of evil which is symbolised through creating the creature. He is described as “a creature causing havoc”. The creature is an unwanted person. He has no belonging in this world. He was created, and because of this, he is an outcast because of Victor Frankenstein. The creature is the victim. He is lonely and rejected. Frankenstein is the cause of this. I believe it is wrong to play god. No man should try and create human beings. He has created a being that is driven to the extremes of loneliness in life. This is destroying innocent lives.

Shelley traveled frequently, once to Italy in 1818, where she composed Italian Lives, which appeared in Lardner’s Cabinet Cyclopedia (Walling 10). Shelley’s marriage persisted for eight years (Spark ix), which ended on July 8, 1822 when Percy Shelley drown (Walling 10), and left her a single mother of a child, and a son on the way (Spark ix). Second, Mary Shelley achieved her highest acknowledgments for her writings and gothic novels. Shelley began her first novel Frankenstein (Thompson 2), at nineteen years of age in the summer of 1816 and publicized it on March 11, 1818 (Walling 9).
