Is depression a mental illness? Before we get into the discussion we need to know what depression is. Depression is typically defined as a mood state that goes well beyond temporarily feeling sad or blue. It is a serious medical illness that affects one’s thoughts, feelings, behavior, mood and physical health. How is it determined to be a mental illness? The American Psychiatric Association 's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) is the current reference used by health care professionals to diagnose mental illnesses such as depression. Depression symptoms are listed as follows: Depressed mood (such as feelings of sadness or emptiness; Reduced interest in activities that used to be enjoyed; Change in appetite or weight increase/decrease; Sleep disturbances (either not being able to sleep well or sleeping too much); Feeling agitated or slowed down; Fatigue or loss of energy; Feeling worthless or excessive guilt; Difficulty thinking, concentrating or troubles making decisions; Suicidal thoughts or intentions. Symptoms that last longer than two weeks is classified as Major Depression.
Depression is referred to by many names: major depression, clinical depression; major depressive illness; major affective disorder, and unipolar mood disorder. Untreated depression will lead to the impairment of tasks and function, feelings of uselessness and thoughts of suicide. As stated by the National Alliance of Mental Illness,” Researchers believe that more than one-half of people who die by suicide are experiencing depression”. ...mind for a lot longer than you would imagine. With an accumulation of these thoughts, it creates a time bomb in our subconscious. There 's an old saying of "Rule your mind, or it will rule you". That coincides with the old metaphor of the gardener and his garden. A gardener builds his garden from scratch, and reaps what he sows. A gardener will also experience the growth of weeds. A wise gardener will eliminate the weeds as they grow, because he 's aware of the consequences of allowing too many weeds to overtake his garden. If he allows the weeds to overtake his garden, he may find himself in a tangled web of a mess. He now had himself with an overgrowth of weeds. His garden is now "imbalanced". Much like depression that appears to be caused by a chemical imbalance, in where it is more likely caused by a negative thought about a situation that we feel powerless over.
