Growing up, we dream to be astronaut’s, or doctors and lawyers. As time goes by we change what we want to do so many times. Getting stuck at times on making a choice. By the time we are juniors and seniors in high school getting ready for college we have a lot of pressure on us to make a decision. It took me slightly longer then others to fully commit on what I wanted to do as my career but I ultimately decided to become a dentist. Many schools have only 70-150 slots available for each school year and usually have thousands of applicants apply. Keeping a GPA of at least a 3.5 is very important, even a 3.3 is cutting it close. Attending a community college is an easy way out. Many schools want the candidate to go to a university because they are viewed as proper preparation for dental school. Get good professional references and job shadow someone in the field to get a taste of it before starting school. I interviewed Dr. David Franks. He works at White-Brown Smiles and has been there for 9 months. He’s been an orthodontist for 2 years. When I asked what the best part of the job was, Dr. Franks said, “The Patients! I also enjoy getting to see my work progress each month.” Dr. Franks chose dentistry because his father was a dentist and he likes teeth. The Electoral College has been the favored method by the United States to elect the president for many years. When the College was first created in 1787 it was seen as an efficient and reliable way to vote the president into office. It has been more than 2 centuries since this method of electing was chosen and many things have changed in U.S. society. The Electoral College is failing to keep up with these advancements in society and a new method must be chosen soon.

The Electoral College can be considered one of the more misunderstood parts of our government. People have many misconceptions on how it works, at least I did until I took this class. When the Framers were developing how their new government was going to work, they ran into many problems. One of those problems was they has different ideas on how the president and vice president were to be elected. Some wanted to elect them like they do in Great Brittan with the parliament electing the prime minister. Others disagreed. The compromise was the creation of what we now call the Electoral College.
The Electoral College was a compromise between those at the Constitutional Convention who wanted the US president elected by popular vote and those who wanted congress to select the president. They believed that having it where each state would get a certain number of votes based on population would keep a manipulative and charming person out of office. They thought it would prevent bribery and corruption along with secret dealings. I don’t think that this is the case and it one of the reason I feel that the Electoral College should be abolished.
Every four years that a Presidential election comes to pass the Electoral College is responsible for the formal election of both the President and Vice President of the United States. As an example of an indirect election, where people in each state at large vote in order to decide which individuals will be delegated the responsibility of casting votes for President and Vice President in accordance with the popular vote of the state which has entrusted them to provide such representation, the Electoral College works to ensure that smaller states are not denied the right to have the equal power of influence in our national election for President (Neale, 2004). The Electoral College itself has been in existence since it was introduced within the framework of various proposals introduced at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 (Neale, 2004). The Mcgovern-Fraser Commission in 1969, which was known formally as the Commission on Party Structure and Delegate Selection, played a crucial role in amending the practices of political parties in their work within the Electoral framework, in particular changing the way in which states were allowed to select delegates to national conventions (Stricherz, 2003). This would result in candidates having to develop broader campaigns that would need to appeal to voters across any state in which they desired that states delegation officially support their candidacy.

The Electoral College is the name for the electors who nominally choose the president and vice president of the United States. Each of the states receives a certain number of electors, which is determined by the total number of senators and representatives it sends to the U.S. Congress. Therefore, each state has at least 3 electors. The Electoral College was devised by the Framers of the Constitution as a procedure to elect the president by the people, at least indirectly. The framers came up with this procedure for many reasons. Such reasons included the lack of information to make a good choice by the people and it was also a way to control the power of the people. Although the Electoral College is still used today, it has undergone several changes and still contains certain weaknesses.
This has has always been a big thing for the United States, has it’s people are bringing in a new person who would eventually lead their country into a good path. When it comes to actually doing the rough work like voting for a new President, that would be an entirely different story. In a chart from Document G, there are 4 past elections listed that compares the popular votes to the electoral votes. In the 2000 election, George W. Bush won by 271 electoral votes, while Gore won by 266 electoral votes. This may seem reasonable for Bush to be the president, but when it comes to the popular vote, although, Gore had highest amount of popular votes than Bush did. So why did Bush win instead? Happening on multiple occasions, the Electoral College has elected a President that did not win the popular vote. Called a “faithless electors”, this happens when an elector doesn’t follow the guidelines provided by the general election (Williams 2). The election of a “minority” President has created controversy whether the Electoral College should be abolished or not. People in favor of the Electoral College state that it requires popular support throughout the states to be elected President, and it protects the smaller states’ interests for the candidates. Those in favor also say that the Electoral College supports and stabilizes a two-party system and maintains the United States’ system of representation (Williams 3). While some people are in favor of the Electoral College, there are people that protest against it. These people say that the Electoral College can lessen the voter turnout, put votes with “faithless electors”, and the Electoral College might not show what the citizens want based on popular vote. Carolyn Jefferson-Jenkins, from League of Women Voters, is a protester of the Electoral College and said, “The Electoral College, a curious vestige of the eighteenth century, violates the principle of one person, one vote. All the various factors that lead me to dentistry amounted to just a part of my decision to become a dentist, the other half of my decision came from the simple question, “(w)ill this be a satisfying career for me?” A satisfying career, to me, is defined by whether or not I can use my career as a means to assist others and experience a sense of accomplishment and self-gratification in helping others. The notion of a satisfying career was one that came through personal experiences. Being a former Medicaid recipient, I was thankful to those that worked in the public health sector to help those in need, including myself and my family. Through my past experiences, I felt obligated to reciprocate the resources and assistance that I had received. At the end of my career, I hope to reflect back on my career and experience a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment for having helped others throughout my career; this is what will amount to successful career, from my point of view.
I can remember coming to school and hearing all my classmates talk about how much they hated going to the dentist. Going to the dentist was one thing that I have always loved to do. The sound of the tools and just the smell of the clinic was never a bad atmosphere to me, I actually enjoy the dentist. Laura was my first dental hygienist from as far back as I can remember, and she had the whitest teeth I have ever seen! I have honestly came to the conclusion that I am obsessed with teeth. With this being said, I have always felt and known that I wanted to be a dental hygienist. I am currently in my first year here at Community College getting my preq for dental hygiene. I always get the question, “Why would you want to look in somebody’s mouth all day?” After I hear this question and then I start thinking to myself. I want to be a dental hygienist because first of all someone has got to do it and secondly, I think smiles light up rooms and if I can help get more smiles in this world then that is what I am going to do. With seeking my career in dental hygiene I have great hopes of being able to help people understand and find compassion in caring for their teeth and inspiring them as Laura inspired me.
The structure and the foundation of the Electoral College originates from the Constitution. Choosing a particular profession is one of the most important decisions that we take in our life. .In my opinion, I would like to focus on a career that is enjoyable, productive, creative and simultaneously allows you to work for the betterment of humanity. According to me, one of the most productive and fulfilling career that provides you various opportunities to help and promote humanity is that of a dentist. Dentistry gains magnificent attention in last some decades and so a huge percentage of people around the world and from US are devoting their life to this noble profession. Becoming a dentist requires a lot of hard work dedication but the factor that motivates you to face these difficulties is the actual pleasure gained when you are able to change someone’s life by creating a beautiful and healthy smile for them and the joy of which could not be expressed.
As Indian culture perceived doctors or engineers as the most successful professionals, that’s what peer pressure introduced me to and instilled in me to be a doctor. Seeing my elder brother become a doctor, I wanted to follow a different path so I channeled my energies towards becoming a dentist. With my hard work and motivation, I was able to score high in the state entrance exams and secured a position in one of the most reputed dental institution of my state. But my interest and fate had different plans.
