Andrew Hacker and Claudia Dreifus report in their essay “Are Colleges Worth the Price of Admission?” what is expected from universities in exchange of their high costs. Currently, the price of education has duplicated its cost in comparison to the last generation (Hacker and Dreifus 179). Making a huge investment and getting poor results are the reasons what make parents and students hesitate before choosing a college. Hacker and Dreifus emphasize that colleges that are doing well their job share factors that make worth paying high tuition fees. Many colleges have failed in achieving the perfect education by the excessive use of technology. Hacker and Dreifus support the use of technology in many cases, such as having interactive question where the software can give the chance to review your work or giving hints to find the right answer (182). Nevertheless, they are completely aware that the use of technology needs to be supported by a good instruction inside the classrooms (183). The University of the Ozarks’ technological resources out of class are a great advantage to improve the learning process in students’ free time. Online discussions, submitting assignments, and taking online tests are the most common online activities for students in this university, this activities challenge the knowledge acquired in class. Moreover, using technology outside the classroom provides the opportunity to use all the class time to go on new topics, to discus, and to answer questions. Nevertheless, the University of the Ozarks is not using all its technological resources appropriately. Most of the classrooms are provided with interactive boards, speakers, and projectors that are hardly ever used. The University of the Ozarks is well known for having plenty of financial aid programs for students. The first part of it consists in the opportunity to get full or part scholarships because of academic or sport achievements. 90% of students at the University of the Ozarks have economic support, this support is given in different amounts and primarily by the University, the Federal Government, or the state of Arkansas. The second part involves part time jobs on campus, around 30% of students have jabs on campus. The objective of this economic support is to make education affordable for more students, and to help students to avoid hard-to-pay loans.
The University of the Ozarks considers students as something more than a number. Even though the college has done several changes to improve the students’ experience and learning, there are still areas that can be improved. However, by using Hacker and Dreifus’ factors as a guide, the University of the Ozarks is doing a great job giving a good level of education. Ultimately, the support given through professors, new learning tools, and economic aid make worth the price of attending this
