Rhys Southan’s essay “Is Art a Waste of Time?” is about art and if it can really help people who are suffering or is it just better to hand over your money. In Yo-Yo Ma’s essay “necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” he focuses more on art being used as educational purposes to essentially create more innovative/empathetic people. Instead of focusing so much on STEM, the author states that we should incorporate art too. Although some people might say art does not play a role in making the world a better place. I believe it can by bringing awareness to different social issues. Also, if we incorporate art at a young age it can teach kids to be open minded and happier people. In “Art is a Waste of Time” it is said that “art’s impact grows by reaching larger audiences” (Southan,439). So for example, the more people who see that picture of a police officer beating a black man then the more impact it makes and the more people will empathize and want to do something to make a change therefore bringing awareness to the issue. Through art is how we find out about many issues going on in the world and without that we would just be a chaotic world full of unaware people. Art can also bring awareness for different cultures because often times people are ignorant or disrespectful to people of different cultures because they don’t know anything about it. If people are exposed to different cultures either through settings like school or the workplace people will be more aware. So everyone will be respectful of each other when it comes to their cultures, their beliefs, and values. In “Is Art a Waste of Time?” Rhys Southan examines Effective Altruists’ (EA’s), an organization that advocates people to pursue a career that provides money for generous donations (Southan). Southan also explains how EA’s believe that it is an ethical choice in giving up one’s hobbies to increase their income for those living in extremities (Southan). Despite the EA’s view of ethical standards, there are many variations of what people consider to be right and wrong behavior. Jobs such as being a teacher, a doctor or an artist, all have related ethical principles in which could define how moral a person is in their occupation. An ethical career is one that allows a person to have integrity, compassion and passion when helping others.
In the United States, fine art education in public schools have been a controversial topic for years. Due to fundings, imagine your child had to choose between art or math. Well of course a parent would choose a math course because they would not survive society in their future without counting. Although, fine art gives an opportunity for a student to express themselves with their thoughts and feelings through the participation of the fine arts. As in today’s society everything is consider “art”. That everything could be in fashion styles to the structures of building such as the Space Needle in Seattle.
Art is a language of its own and with out he proper understanding, people are like expression goes “left on the outside looking in”. In other words, people without the proper understanding of art, technique and form as well as other elements can’t appreciate a work of art as much as when you understand why an artist painted in the way they did and what they are trying to get across to his audience. Despite artists attempts to try and make their works as viewer friendly as possible, without the understanding and knowledge gained from an art class as this one people will never fully understand the a work of art as it is meant to be.
Not that art can’t do this, it can, but it can also be beautiful. Some people will only see it as beautiful, but that doesn’t make it stop being art. Some people will think it is ugly, but that’s just their opinion and if they want to claim it is not art, that doesn’t mean it’s not art for the rest of us. Why does all art need to be understood by everyone? Can we not just let artists paint their visions?
Roger Ebert was a famous movie critic from the later twentieth century and early twenty-first century. According to www.thefamouspeople.com, Ebert started his career with Chicago Sun-Times Newspaper and worked there until death. In his time he was a writer, Ebert wrote the article, “Video Games Can Never Be Art,” in which he gives us the basic response to questions asked to him early on that video games are childish and simply cannot be considered art. While many may agree with Ebert, his argument is invalid. Video games, to me, should be considered art because they introduced me to the art of graphics at a young age, they are an artform in the eyes of the law, and have been displayed in an actual art museum in the United States.
But, through art education these students have a greater chance to accomplish what they thought they couldn’t in past. It’s proven that art in schools “has a tremendous impact on the developmental growth of every child and has proven to help level the "learning field" across socio-economic boundaries” (Americans for the Arts). For students who participate in art competitions, they are able to travel and experience meeting new people and being in new places. Students are always encouraged to gather opinions from other students and work together, expanding their team-building skills and teaching them to respect contrasting viewpoints. Since the arts is universal, students learn about arts in other cultures and the history of it.
Not only can art help improve a kids education over all, having it taught as a regular part of the curriculum helps children learn to express themselves in a way that is safe and promotes problem solving. There is no right answer in art so it allows the student to explore all options before finding the one
Art Education is not always valued in school settings. Although some may see it as an unnecessary use of school funding, there are many who believe it is beneficial to students in more ways than one. There are many different studies that have been conducted to test the effects that art education has on school-aged children. Some studies have proven that art education can help students to improve in other academic areas. In a journal article from Ohio State University’s “Theory in Practice,” Karen A Hamblen states, “There are linkages between art learning and learning in other subjects areas and that art study can promote creative behaviors, critical thinking skills, and academic achievement.” It has also been found that the arts can teach children better self-regulatory strategies, and even foster more confidence and self-efficacy in school which relates to confidence in academics. Overall, art education in schools has been very beneficial and has proven to ignite creativity, confidence, critical thinking skills, and academic achievement in students.
In today’s society anything can be considered “Art”. From the great sounds of a symphony, to the architecture of a modern structure, or even an elephant painting with its trunk, art is what the viewer perceives it to be. Individuals will always agree or disagree with the message behind a certain piece of art, as pieces can be offensive to some, but beautiful to others. Some argue that funding the arts in school is a waste of money, time, or a combination of both, but the benefits outweigh the negatives by far, due to a variety of reasons.

Art education is often underestimated by many who believe that school was created to teach only analytical concepts such as mathematics and literature. However, research has shown that art courses are important, even necessary for students in elementary, middle, and high schools. These art classes may include not only visual arts but performing arts such as dance, theatre and choir. Barbara Streisand said, “Art does not exist only to entertain, but also to challenge one to think, to provoke, even to disturb, in a constant search for the truth,” (Quotations). Streisand points out that there are multiple benefits to art whether it be painted by a brush or sung from the heart. Art has the ability to allow people to see situations from different points of view not merely to look beautiful as decoration. Those who believe that art education is unimportant are simply ignorant to the benefits that involvement in the arts holds for not just the individual but for society in general. While some in society may not recognize the immediate results. Art education is beneficial to students in primary and secondary schools.

Art integration has shown that it helps with creating ideas, thinking with a new mind set, and process new challenges that they will face as they grow and see things that they have not seen yet. Many people believe that art integrated with the other subjects would not help students I disagree with that, art can help with many subjects and help students understand them.
Throughout the ages art has played a crucial role in life. Art is universal and because art is everywhere, we experience it on a daily basis. From the houses we live in (architecture) to the movies we see (theatre) to the books that we read (literature). Even in ancient culture art has played a crucial role. In prehistoric times cave dwellers drew on the wall of caves to record history. In biblical times paintings recorded the life and death of Christ. Throughout time art has recorded history. Most art is created for a specific reason or purpose, it has a way of expressing ideas and beliefs, and it can record the experiences of all people.

It can help them use their knowledge and come up with extraordinary ideas to make big changes in the world, and it can also keep students away from bad things and be better human beings by doing what they are interested in.
Art has a more powerful impact in the pursuit of social justice because it conveys emotions that no book, article, or study could ever convey. Using art in social work formulates a deeper understanding of the issue at hand, provides a stronger method of communication amongst those involved, and creates a longer-lasting, more powerful impact.
