Imagine a woman you love dearly, be it your wife, sister, daughter, cousin, colleague, maybe even your own mother, facing an unintended pregnancy. She is stuck between a rock and a hard place and all she knows is that she cannot carry this pregnancy to term. Maybe it’s the wrong time, maybe she’s too young to handle this responsibility, maybe it was a complete accident, the condom broke, she forgot to take her birth control pill, whatever the reason, she just knows she can’t handle the weight of bearing a child. This is where it gets messy. Imagine abortion is completely illegal. What does she do? Does she carry the child to term and give it up to be stuck in the system until it turns 18? Mainstream abortion fights are often faced by middle class white women and don’t recognize the problems that disadvantaged minorities have to face when getting an abortion. “In the United States, the abortion rate for black women is almost five times that for white women.”(GPR) The abortion rates for minority groups are much higher than that of whites because minority groups face a much higher rate of unintended pregnancies, this is in part due to the lack of sex education in schools. Bell Hooks explains some of the problems minority women face that helps to lead to these unintended pregnancies include “basic sex education, prenatal care, preventive health care that would help females understand how their bodies worked”. Minority women have to face an even bigger stigma when receiving an abortion because of racism and the fact that they receive more abortions than whites.
