IOM Report Impact on the Nursing Profession "In 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) began a two year study initiative to respond to the need to assess and transform the nursing profession (Institute of Medicine, 2010). An interdisciplinary committee was put together to report the nation 's issues impacting health care. Recommendations were set forth by the IOM in a way to improve and restructure the nursing profession to fit the future of the medical field (Institute of Medicine, 2010). The recommendations from the committee start with an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing and identify matters of medical care, research and education. (Hassmiller, 2010). The ANA is incorporating the concepts taken from the IOM’s report, with the focus on leadership, education, and the practices of nursing (American Nurses Association, n.d.). It is vital to the nursing profession to produce leaders in the nursing profession throughout the healthcare system, starting at the bedside to the boardroom (Institute of Medicine, 2010). The IOM advocates for nurses while supporting them to step up into a leadership roles. In the past, the nursing role was thought of as assisting the physician and only carry out the direction of their orders. According to the IOM report (2010), the nursing leadership should be “full partners in redesign efforts, accountable for their contributions to delivering high- quality care, and work collaboratively with leaders from other health professions” (p. 3). The IOM report had four key messages needed for advancing the future of nursing. “Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training; achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression; be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, …and; effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure” (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The report also included eight recommendations needed to facilitate the necessary changes to in the nursing profession so meet to demands of the healthcare reform.

This paper focuses on providing a summary of the efforts of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative on the Future of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine research which influenced the IOM report, “Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.” The importance of the IOM “Future of Nursing” report related to the nursing practice, nursing education and nursing workforce development will be stated. The role of state-based action coalitions and how they advance goals of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action will be described. A summary on will be provided of two (2) initiatives that are spearheaded by Florida state’s Action Coalition with an explanation of ways in which the initiatives advance the nursing profession. Existing barriers to advancement currently in Florida and ways in which nursing advocates may overcome these barriers will be discussed.

The 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report- The Future of Nursing described the role that nurses have in the current and future US health care environment (IOM, 2011). This report was completed at a time when the Affordable Care Act had been passed and a new emphasis was being put on interdisciplinary healthcare teams, care coordination, value-based payment systems, and preventative care (IOM, 2011). Nursing is the largest profession in health care and with an aging baby boomer populace, the expanded role of nurses will be critical in meeting the growing healthcare burdens (Sisko et al., 2014).
About 32 million people will represent the newly insured, affecting the health care system and nurses are the fundamental in health system. Health care reform is positive for nurses. The health care bill provides money for advance practice and general nurse education. The law also creates a grant program for innovative safety net programs, such as nurse-managed health clinics. Due to the shortage of family Physicians, nurse practitioner programs are going strong. The health care reform is a good opportunity for nurses; the law will permit different approaches to deliver primary care and with the decreasing number of physicians going in to primary care, Nurses represent the best way to provide primary care to the millions of new insured people. Hospital administrators will charge nurse leaders with ensuring that patient positive outcomes prevail while also controlling overhead. Nurse leaders are specially trained just for this task. Clinical Nurse Leaders are the experts that America’s patients will rely on to keep them safe and healthy in hospital settings.
The American Nurses Association (ANA) developed a foundation for which all nurses are expected to perform their basic duties in order to meet the needs of the society we serve. The ANA “has long been instrumental in the development of three foundational documents for professional nursing; its code of ethics, its scope and standards of practice, ands statement of social policy.” (ANA, 2010, p. 87) The ANA defined nursing as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” and used to create the scope and standards of nursing practice. (ANA, 2010, p. 1) These “outline the steps that nurses must take to meet client healthcare needs.” () The nursing process, for example, is one of the things I use daily. Unlike business minded individuals whose primary outcome concern is monetary, a nurses’ primary concern is organic: a living, breathing, tangible being. In a leadership role, a nurse might consider an organization as if it were a grouping of patients, or perhaps an individual patient, each limb with its own characteristics and distinct concerns. They can effectively categorize and prioritize important personal and professional matters and are therefore ideally positioned to lead change efforts. Perhaps most importantly, effective nurse leaders can provide clarity to the common goal and empower others to see their self-interests served by a better common good (Yancer, 2012).
In nursing practice, the NLN’s mission aligns with extending nursing education by fostering excellence to progress a diverse team in evolving health on both national and global levels (NLN, 2016). The NLN seeks to be a leader in nursing education by setting goals and objectives. This organization plays a prominent role in nursing education by spearheading the nursing workforce with nursing certifications and examinations and serving as the main source for legislation reform. The NLN inspires students to apply professional clinical expertise to practice in an ethical manner with the utmost respect and value caring (Bavier, 2015). In nursing research, the NLN endorses evidence-based nursing education by promoting resources to foster research and evolve research initiatives to transform education in nursing (NLN, 2016). As stated in the mission, nursing excellence is an integral force for the basis of the NLN. In the NLN’s goals and objectives, the drive to be the official source of information for legislation, the emphasis to rally attention to the political, academic, and professional areas, the advocacy in setting standards of caring all around the globe, all reflect the aspirations
Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Several years ago in 2008 the RWJF and the IOM collaborated for two years to discern the future needs of the nursing profession. Most importantly, the objective was to outline the critical actions needed to ensure nursing was ready to seamlessly move towards the future. This was no easy task as nurses work in such diverse settings such as outpatient areas, acute care settings, the community, and long term settings to name a few. Couple this with the fact that nurses have a variety of educational avenues such as the associates, diploma, or bachelor’s degree open to them to achieve the status of registered nurse (Institute of Medicine, 2010). All of this considered, the committee did design four key messages regarding the future of nursing as key in the transformation of health care as evidenced in their "Future of Nursing" report.
