1. How has the IOC successfully maximized its revenue? What are the IOC’s main revenue sources, and what is done with the money?
IOC has successfully maximized its revenue by not letting a dollar go to waste. The IOC’s main revenue sources come from broadcasting (47%) and sponsorship (45%). While a small percentage of revenue come from ticketing (5%) and licensing (3%). “ IOC distributes over 90% of the Olympic marketing revenue to the organizations throughout the Olympic movement to stage games and to promote the worldwide development of the sport”. Why is security at mega-events like the Olympics critical? Please provide three different examples of security issues at the Olympic games.
Over the years, it has become more and more important for large mega-events to have the most high tech forms of surveillance out on the market. At the recent Rio Olympics, Rio deployed yearly 100,000 security officers and used more than 3,000 vehicles. In Rio they even used blimps, which gave overhead views of the city. Security is important at these events because these events bring lots and lots of people together in one place. When the mega-event is a sport, that also brings in an element of competition, which results in different and opposing viewpoints, with all of this comes conflict.

At the Munich Olympics in 1972, on September 5th a Palestinian terrorist group by the name of Black September murdered eleven Israeli athletes, coaches and a West German police officer. Five of the Palestinian terrorists were also killed. The scale of this massacre was heightened because this was the first Olympic game to be filmed on tv, so everyone around the globe was updated on this horrific tragedy pretty quickly.
