involvement with the church. I was able to witness this through observing the congregation’s participation in Mass and the respect they showed for their priest.
According the Vatican (n.d.) it is important that in the church and within the community the priest is available to support and guide people in the faith and love of Christ. It is the priest’s responsibility to guide individual’s whether they are apart of his church or not. The priest also has the responsibility “of teaching, governing and providing the sacraments in a given congregation" (Brom, 2004, p. 3). From what I witnessed during this experience, it is clear that the priest is revered in his community. It was obvious when observing communion how much the congregation respected the priest and viewed receiving the blessing or taking the sacraments as a very important, holy event.
In my reflection prior to my experience, I mentioned that I thought the pope was a very high elder that the Catholic church honours. The pope is regarded as “the spiritual head of the Roman Catholic church” (Rostow, 1968, p. 3). It is the Pope’s responsibility to be a teacher to the public, and “mediate essential ideas which inform his Church” (Rostow, 1968, p. 13). The pope is the highest elder in the Roman Catholic church and is revered around the world (Rostow, 1968).

In any type of health care setting, it is important that the individual feels comfortable to possess artifacts of their faith. In the long term care setting, and on chronic care floors in the hospitals, I have seen individual’s display the crucifix in their room. After research I learned that this artifact reminds the individual of the sacrifice Jesus made for them. Attending a non-denominational church we start out with worship and being free to sing and dance and let our spirits take over. This may come out as someone running around the pews, or on their knees, but while in the Catholic Church the environment was much different. It was a lot more structured and formal in a sense than that of the non-denominational church where I practice my faith. Another difference was the offering, or as the Catholic Church calls it, the Gift. As I walked into the first gallery, I saw a wood sculpture that stood in the center of the room. This carving depicted “the crucified Christ, flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist with Angels holding instruments of the Passion”. It was painted oak and very appealing to the eye. It stood approximately 15 feet in the air. The origin of this sculpture is unknown, but it was found in a Belgium church. This kind of sculpture usually stood at the entrance or at the center of the alter in the church facing the congregation. This image of the suffering Christ relates to the Christian ideas of suffering and Christ’s salvation of all mankind.

Growing up in a heavy Hispanic family, I was raised with Catholic morals and practices. Every week, my family dressed in our best Sunday clothes and attended mass at “Our Lady of Perpetual Help”, where our family priest, Father Juan Nicholau, discoursed his sermons. Both my parents came from a heavy Hispanic-Catholic background where they prayed the rosary every evening with their families. As far as their participation in the church, my dad was really involved in the church as an usher, Eucharistic minister, and lecturer. On the other hand, my mom was a catechist during the school year for seven year olds.

In healthcare organizations, medical staff must conform to their hospital and their country’s code of conduct. Not only do they have to meet set standards, they must also take their patient into consideration. When making a decision upon a patient, medical staff must recognize religious backgrounds and spiritual beliefs. By understanding a patients’ beliefs and their belief system, a medical worker can give the patient their deserved medical assistance without overstepping boundaries or coming off as offensive. The practices and beliefs of four religions will be articulated throughout this essay to fully understand how religion can either help or hinder the healing process.
Though Pastor Jose’s church wasn’t large and didn’t have an overwhelming number of people, what made it special was how faith was expressed joyfully during the worship. Together, each member sang and prayed to God. This worshiping is all part of Christianity as seen in many Christian denominations. Furthermore, “Baptist view Christianity as way of life, indeed as a life, of worship and obedience in faith and fellowship” (Hays & Steely, 1963, p. 35); in such an intimate setting, members of the church worship as a whole. As any other church, a worship consist of different elements that represent the faith.
In the beginning of my junior year of high school, one of my close friends told me she was getting confirmed at church next Sunday, completely clueless I only nodded in agreement and said that was great! When we arrived home I asked my mom what confirmation was, and she explained to me that it was the next step, or Sacrament, in a Catholic’s life where you confirm the relationship you have and want with God.
When one looks at their life, at any stage in which they live, it is pivotal to see clearly how they are finding meaning, purpose and direction within their daily decisions. As I’ve learned to value the role of community and covenant relationships in my life, it has been a challenge to continually commit myself to overcoming my flesh and correctly align myself with God’s intentions for my life. As part of this transformative process in centering my worldview on Christ’s love, I’ve concluded that all of life’s ultimate questions are found to have been correctly answered in the Bible; repeatedly in Scripture, and specifically in one verse, I have found that it sources everything in life to the glory of God. Romans 11:36 centers our attention on Christ, from whom we derive all answers to origins, meaning, morality, destiny and identity for our lives: “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. (ESV).” Not only does the most credible book ever written support this thesis, but in “Making Sense of your World,” it is strongly communicated that “God alone is the ultimate reality and everything else is derived from him (Phillips, Brown, Stonestreet, 2008, p. 44).”
My views on whether people are born good, evil, or neutral have not changed. I still believe that there is continuum that ranges from good to evil with neutral in the center. I think most people fall somewhere in the middle of this continuum though there may be some genetic traits that predispose them one way or the other slightly. For most people what causes us to fall into either the good or evil ranges are specific moments in time and the actions or behaviors we choose. Most people are neither fully good nor fully evil, but in a given situation can be either. However, I believe that good or evil actions can be reinforced for individuals, making the person more likely to act or behave in a similar manner again even if it is against the individual’s core beliefs about himself or herself.
Our observations took place at Newman’s Catholic Church. In particular, we observed the interactions of a priest for an hour and thirty minutes. We began by observing how he interacted with members of the church for the first fifteen minutes before service began. Then we focused on his interactions with the assembly during service and finally, we witnessed how he interacted with others after mass. During this time a few noticeable differences occurred.
Only through the words of consecration, “This is my Body… and this is my Blood”, can we truly experience the fruits of the Eucharist. This is only possible through God’s accordance with the Scriptures, Sacraments(the Eucharist in this case), minister(priest or bishop), and the people of the Church(The Body of Christ). Just like Jesus and his disciples during the Last Supper, all of the members of the Mass join in intercession in order to properly bestow power upon the Sacrament of the Eucharist. As the priest serves as a representation of Jesus, we serve as his disciples.
