Investing in Human Capital
When you think of investments you may think of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, savings accounts, CD's, and etc. There is some other way that you can invest. You can invest in your life through various things whether it is volunteer or paid. That is called human capital and that is "the stock of knowledge and skill, embodied in an individual as a result of education, training, and experience that makes them more productive" (1). I have invested in my life in a variety of ways and I will talk about this in the next few paragraphs.
The first thing that I went through was something that started when I was six. That is when I started kindergarten at Kirbyville School. I went to Kirbyville until grade six and then transferred to Branson and went there until I graduated as a senior of the class of 2002. Here is where I learned valuable skills that I can use in college. We all know that we learn the basics like counting and our ABC's all the way up to trigonometry and College Prep English. The most important thing about high school though is that you learn perseverance to get through rigorous studying and long homework assignments. These things prepare you for college. So schooling before college is a very big investment because that is the first building block of getting a job later in life that provide you with a lot of capital.
The next step that I took was going to College of the Ozarks. If this is not preparing me for better money in the future I don't know what is. I am an accounting major and I am taking classes that are giving me a very big potential for a wide variety of jobs in the future. I have taken beginning and intermediate accounting and am taking advanced accounting right now. I have taken cost accounting, government/not-for-profit accounting, tax accounting, and am taking a class to make me better on the computer for accounting. I have also taken business classes to help me understand the managing and marketing aspect of a business. The main teachers in my field of study have been Mr. Mahlman, Mr. Bearden, DR. PETTY, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Moody and Mr. Reily.
I am also going to a college that is a work/study college and that means that you work for your education on campus.
Robert Leamnson’s essay “Learning (Your First Job)” effectively proposes the importance of learning by suggesting ways of making notes, studying, and doing assignments. Leamnson cannot stress it enough, how learning will not be accomplished unless you want to do it. If you do not have the want of learning then there is no point in doing it. High school education is so much different than your post-secondary education. The material that is being learned in the college classes is materials that will be useful for your later career. I plan to work while I attend college. I believe this is so important because I can help with my living expenses and contribute toward my education. For years, I have been under my parents’ wings, and I would love to help them by financially giving back to them. Working in college will improve my education as well as my family’s finances, and I think that it is crucial. By being connected to the right people in the right positions who would be willing to serve as your mentor, you are likely to get more exposure in your field of study, and this can setup you up to move right into a position that you would like to work. Early college will continue to challenge yourself instead of staying in high school just wasting time and hindering your growth when you know that you are ready for a challenge. Being able to go to college early will bring about better job opportunities and show the higher level of maturity of your child. Let’s face it, some people learn in high school and others, well, have to learn to learn. Some of us need to experience the beast of real life before we truly understand the importance of education. Liz Addison wasn’t a scholar by a country mile in her youth. She touches on this in her article “Two Years Are Better Than Four” as she states, “On a score of one, I left school hurriedly at sixteen.” It wasn’t until later in life that she understood the importance of academics. Jayson Boyers stated that "having a college education can make big differences in some people 's lives" (The Huffington Post Newspaper, 2012). People who do college education often get high level and high paying jobs. The main reason for why students feel hesitant to attend college after they graduate from high school is because they worry about the price of schooling and they prefer to have a job instead to make fast money. Although, people who graduated from high school often are only able to receive jobs at fast food restaurants, clothing stores, etc. When people are able to earn more than enough money to have a stable life they are able to be less stress-free and enjoy their lives more. People who often work in retail jobs face the risk of not making enough money to buy food and also pay their rent. The money that people earn in retail jobs takes a very long time to save up in order to go to college. Alternatively, the world is very competitive and people, truthfully, do have trouble succeeding and even surviving day to day. The most recommended thing to do is to go to college after high school and take out a student loan if needed and pay it off when a career job is obtained. Working very hard now equals to a better life, job opportunities afterward, and positive friendships
But many low-income students not only have a full-time course schedule, they also have jobs where they work more than 30 hours per week. Approximately one-quarter of college students’ work while attending school and have both a full course-load and a full-time job (Carnevale, Smith, & Melton, 2015). Working helps students with the living costs as well as tuition and can help students learn skill sets that many employers prefer. However, there are problems with having full-time work while going to college.
So after graduation I decided to explore my options at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh. Wow, was this a mistake? Not only was the college to big for my own well being, but the big university provided too many distractions. This is why I feel I have finally taken the right and first step. in securing my future.
School is a process that takes time and a lot of dedication. When we finish high school we have to choose to go to college or not. Most people go to college without knowing what they want to do. The only thing we know is that we want a degree of some sort. Getting a college degree should be essential to everybody because without one you won’t be successful in life.
High school is where I had gained an awareness about how what I 'm learning in school is going to benefit me in the real world. I learned an retain a variety of information because the things that I did learn I felt like you would need to know to survive in the real world. A perfect example of this is driver 's ed where I learned to drive something that I do everyday frequently. Another reason why I learned and retain so much I because when I got into high school is around the same time I got my first job. This definitely opened the door in showing me how what I 'm learning in school applies to everyday work activities such as knowing and counting money this is where math comes in. A child does not typically think about their life ahead. Although, they may not think about college, it is still there. Life ahead means getting a job to make money for everything else and if one wants a well paying job in the future, then college is the best option. College education is worth it because it makes a person better and more educated, college is not as expensive as some think, and the college pays for itself once there is a job to pay for it.
I’m a student at Tompkins Cortland Community College this is my first semester as a college student. I plan to go to college for four years and only be at TC3 for this one semester, then transfer to a four year school. College has grown around the world more than ever and more people are attending college more than ever. I have chosen to go to college because of the rewards after graduation. Yes it is another four years of school but by getting more education and an extended degree gives me more opportunities for better jobs and more money. The career I have chosen to study is business administration. I am hoping that it takes me to a great job managing a company or possibly being an accountant.
Speaking from personal experience, for the most my part high school did a poor job in preparing me to be successful in college. The habits of a good student are developed at an early stage, which is why it is critically important for kids to receive proper education as early as possible. Obtaining a college degree is something that most parents wish for their children but it can sometimes be an obstacle for someone that did not receive a proper education from a young age. I grew up in South Central and I must admit that for the most part my education was exceptional from first to seventh grade due to me attending magnets schools. My High School life has helped shape the way for my college experiences that I will face. My senior year in high school is not the same as many other high school students. I am taking many advanced classes to help me prepare for college. These classes help me better understand exactly how much harder I must work to succeed.
Both high school and college make a certain commitment to each student. They are committed to provide the students with remarkable opportunities to pursue and enhance their education. For example, scholarships, loans, and financial aid can provide the student with an opportunity to pursue his or her education, no matter what their financial status is.
Elementary school is where most people learn how to interact with peers outside of their families. It is also where you learn how to follow leaders and the directions they provide to you. Without the basics of reading, math, and problem solving, you would not be successful in higher grades. The struggle of catching up may discourage you from trying. This can cause you to drop out or not even attempt to continue on to college. The result may limit your job options and money making capacity, which leads into the second function, economic outcomes. The more education you have, the greater chance you will find the job of your dreams. Not only with higher pay, but with less physical requirements, increased probability of a leadership position, and improved overall working conditions that can lead to enhanced health with a longer life expectancy (New York University Department of Sociology, 2013). I was lucky to have teachers in my elementary school who were devoted to teach. They explained what going to college would mean and encouraged us by having college prep classes in 5th grade.
