The invention of the Internet is one of the most influential inventions in world history. Few would have guessed the substantial changes to everyday life it would produce. The Internet’s influence is far reaching. It has come to influence interactions with friends, family, co-workers and others alike. A relatively new aspect of the Internet has been social networking sites. The popularity of these sites is nothing to scoff at. One of the most successful social networking sites is Facebook. Today Americans spend more time on Facebook than any other site, and nearly 4 in 5 active internet users visit social networks and blogs (Nielsen, 2011). Today in 2014, Facebook is a perfect mixture of information, social interactions and pictures, which produces a great forum for social comparisons. There are two motivations that lead to Facebook use. First is the need to belong, and the second is the need for self-presentation. Being a member of Facebook means that an individual can create their own profile. Having a Facebook profile means that one can list their accomplishments such as: where they went to school, how many degrees they have, their job title, etc... Also, all sorts of other personal information is made available on Facebook: relationship status, marriage proposals, photos of trips, photos of families, even status updates bragging about oneself are fair game on Facebook. This allows one to create a false sense of ones true identity and to lie about who they are or who they wish they were. Making time in the real world more miserable and lonely. So, in order to feel more, and to feel more like ourselves, we connect. This momentary feeling of being connected doesn’t give real life experiences, yet gives us a false sense of belongingness, and in reality removes us from true belonging. “In a world consumed by even more novel modes of socializing, we have less and less actual society (Marche, 2012)”. The reality is that the more one becomes connected through social networking and media, the lonelier they are. We live in a society were the norm is to now sit in a room full of people and entertain ourselves on our phones or lab tops. It is more important to respond to an email that to pick up the phone and make a call. We have become very less personable with one another and lack communication as a hole. Your children need to know what its like to look at their parents’ faces without seeing them on their phone watching videos on Facebook, because that feeling doesn’t give the child a sense of love and care, it gives the child a feeling of being unwanted and undesirable. It then creates children who go out and repeat the same cycle of being unconnected physically and only connected
