We have come a long way from where we are now and when we started. During the beginning of time, we did not have cars, stoves, or even cellphones. Now thanks to several different inventions and discoveries we hold the opportunity to use many things that can help us with our daily tasks. Electricity is one of the major inventions that helps with operating all the electrical base appliances we use on a daily basis. Almost half of the electricity used by industry is for lighting. Most of the light is produced by incandescent light bulbs. What is an incandescent light bulb? How does it work? Who was it discovered by?
An incandescent light bulb is an electrical light made in a variety of sizes, watts, and voltages. The way it works is by electric current passing through the tungsten filament that is located in the glass enclosure, heating it to a temperature that produces light. Most of the time incandescent light bulbs contain a stem or glass mount attached to the bulb 's base which allows the electrical contacts to run through the envelope without gas/air leaks. Also it has tiny wires embedded in the stem support the filament and/or its lead wires. Another characteristic of the incandescent light bulb is that it contains either a vacuum or an inert gas to help preserve and protect the filament from evaporating in the enclosing glass enclosure. This type of electric lighting has been used for over a hundred years. Incandescent light bulbs is commonly used for control devices, indoor/outdoor use, decorative lighting, advertising lighting and portable lighting.

The first successful light bulb was created in 1879 by a man named Thomas Edison. Although he was the first person to achieve this goal successfully he was not the only one ...

...y Independence and Security Act of 2007 kicked off a huge shift in how light bulbs are manufactured, focusing in great part on making incandescent bulbs more efficient. Now when shopping for new incandescent bulbs, the most important thing to look at is the number of lumens, instead of the wattage. To help with preventing an electrical fire it is important for people to make sure that you do not buy a bulb that uses more wattage than the fixture will accept. Most lighting fixtures have a limit of 100 or 150 watts. When it comes down to Incandescent light bulbs or any kind of light bulb in general, the only thing that has changed over the years is the efficiency of the bulb. Thanks to the change of energy efficiency in the incandescent light bulbs no matter what light bulbs people decide to use they are still capable of saving money on energy either which way they go.

Electricity is Used in Motors, Not Just in Light Bulbs Essay

- Electricity is not only used to turn on lights, or make things work, it's also being used in automobiles and other motor-run things. Electric motors also conserve energy and isn't as harmful as a diesel engine or motor engine. Electric motors date back all the way in the 1800's when Thomas Davenport built the first real working electric motor. He used a spinning wheel technique and levers that move back and forth repeatedly. His work ended up being used to move trolleys, but not till 50 years after his death....   [tags: AC and DC motors, electric power]

Essay on Comparing Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs And Incandescent Bulbs

- Completed Work Task 1: Compare compact fluorescent light bulbs to incandescent light bulbs. In order to begin our research, we first had to prove that our current light bulbs are not the cheapest and not the most efficient choice to light up our buildings. Otherwise, it would have been useless for us to continue. We began our research using government documents, electronic books, and websites that compare incandescent light bulbs to other types of light bulbs. Ballast describes incandescent lamps as sealed bulbs which contain a filament and Argon gas....   [tags: Incandescent light bulb, Fluorescent lamp]

Light Bulbs : Illuminating The Difficulties Of Attempts At Environmental Protection

- Light Bulbs: Illuminating the Difficulties of Attempts at Environmental Protection Modern conveniences have come a long way in the last few centuries; mankind has invented everything from steam locomotives to computers and the internet, but no creation has been quite so monumental as the light bulb. As recently as the mid-1800s, people still relied on inconveniences like candles and oil lamps for light, and as technology advanced, scientists and engineers recognized that it was time for a change; after his great success with the phonograph, Thomas Edison was eager to rise to this new challenge, beating out his competition to patent the first incandescent bulb in 1879....   [tags: Incandescent light bulb, Fluorescent lamp]

Essay on Physics of Incandescent Light bulbs

- The incandescent light bulb, since its fairly recent invention, has quickly become a basic essential of modern technological life as we know it. It took many years to create an practical bulb despite the simplicity of its structure. I believe a majority of us take them completely for granted as a normal part of life. Early man knew the sun as his lightsource and when the sun set, he knew the moon and the stars. As his intelligence increased and he learned about the world in which he lived he became associated with fire....   [tags: physics light bulb]

History of Electricity Essay

- The oldest civilization known to understand electricity was the ancient Greeks because of the electric fish in the Nile River. In the 1600’s William Gilbert an English Physician studied electricity and magnetism; studies were continued by other researchers such as Robert Boyle and Benjamin Franklin. Then by the 1800’s scientist Allesandro Volta had identified a way to harness electricity in a battery format and he had also discovered the chemical reactions that electricity could produce. Volta also invented the first device with a steady current known as the electric battery, and he also created the first transmission of electricity by linking positively-charged and negatively-charged connec...   [tags: electricity, science]

The Three Different Types of Household Light Bulbs Essay

- ... The disadvantages of using incandescent globes for lighting are: that they generate too much heat, they are expensive to use, they have to be replaced frequently, and they aren’t energy efficient. The filament in an incandescent light bulb can reach up to 2500 degrees, and the bulb itself can get to 500 degrees. Incandescent bulbs use a lot of electricity and are expensive to run; 50,000 hours of use (including bulbs) costs $352.50 compared to $89.75 (CFL) and $85.75 (LED). Incandescent lights have to be changed regularly as they run for only 1,200 hours compared to the CFL (10,000) and LED (50,000)....   [tags: LED, CFL, energy efficient, durable]

- The government should phase out incandescent lighting due to the advantages of the new alternatives. At this time, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are the central focus of this change and will be used as the example. First, CFLs on the market have better lighting quality than in previous years compared to incandescent bulbs. While quality is not the primary focus of the change, it signals a higher development and readiness for application to the greater public. Popular Mechanics, back in May 2007, designed a study comparing an incandescent light to seven different CFLs....   [tags: environment, alternative energy, lighting]
