We have come a long way from where we are now and when we started. During the beginning of time, we did not have cars, stoves, or even cellphones. Now thanks to several different inventions and discoveries we hold the opportunity to use many things that can help us with our daily tasks. Electricity is one of the major inventions that helps with operating all the electrical base appliances we use on a daily basis. Almost half of the electricity used by industry is for lighting. To help with preventing an electrical fire it is important for people to make sure that you do not buy a bulb that uses more wattage than the fixture will accept. Electricity is an interesting subject. There is so much you can learn from it, like how our lights turn on or how we make cell phones. This is all a mystery until we finally get a little bit of information in our brains. I've just read two articles, "Energy Story" and "Conducting solutions". I also watched a video called Hands-on Science with Squishy circuits. I learned so much valuable information from these resources.

Thomas Edison is an inventor of major technology. Threw his years he had studied many books by his parents and been reading many books on chemistry and electricity. The more he grew up he started to pursue his education on chemistry and electronics for many years. The more he tried to invent things he had help making of the light bulb with a group of scientists. Thomas edison started working on his igea of a light bulb in 1878. He envisioned it as a oil and gas based light that would be longlasting that could be used indoors instead of having to use the outdoor light. He based his ideas on other people's inventions such as Henry Woodward and Mathew Evans. He found that there were many flaws with where light sources and planned on creating a whole different approach to building his light build that would fix all on the problems. The light bulb is the way we see in the dark, the way we find our way, the way we know when to go at a stoplight. How did Thomas Edison achieve this invention? Knowledge. Knowledge of electricity and the needs of those around him. In The Great Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan claims that she wants her daughter to be “a beautiful little fool.” In other words Daisy is saying that ignorance is bliss. Some others believe that knowledge is power. The advancement from candles to light bulbs changed the culture entirely. People could easily do the work they needed to after sunset, and it even led to more inventions. We need knowledge to advance, and for this reason powerful knowledge is more valid than blissful ignorance.

Thomas Alva Edison was declared the most important man of the century according to Time magazine. He graced the world with his incandescent bulb, powered by a rapidly growing electrical movement of which he was a major leader. What most people do not understand is the fact that if the “Wizard” had his way, there would be a power plant every several miles, scattered about the land like sprinkles on a cupcake. At the time, direct current was the only choice, inhibiting as it was. Then, thanks to a man names Nikola Tesla, an alternating current motor was invented, allowing much more efficient electricity travel. This is just one example of the impact Telsa has had on the modern world. The forgotten father of science, Tesla, is responsible for numerous complex inventions that have changed and will continue to change the modern world.

In New York City during the late 1880’s, a fierce battle was raging between two great innovators of the age. The combatants, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla, were fighting over the prize to power cities in the ever more industrial world. Thomas Edison championed his direct-current (DC) system whereas Nikola Tesla was proposing his system using alternating-current (AC). This “War of the Currents” ushered in the electrical age, from which our modern society arose. Just as the AC and DC electrical generating systems where diametrically opposed to each other; so were Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison.
Edison is most famous for the development of the first electric light bulb. Like I said Edison was born into a time where America wasn’t very developed. He was born, and electricity had not been developed. But thanks to Edison when he had passed away on October 18, 1931 whole cities were lit up in electricity. The history of engineering goes back into the 19th century when Alexander Volta (1745-1827) made a remarkable discover regarding the nature of electricity (Cosgrove 749). He discovered that electrical current could be controlled and could flow from one point to another. By the time the mid-19th century came about the rules for electricity were being established. During this time electromagnetic induction was discovered by Michael Faraday who lived from 1791 to 1867 (749). Also during this time Samuel Morris invented the telegraph in 1837 which relies on the principles of electromagnetic induction (749). Alexander Graham Bell, who lived from 1847 to 1922, created the telephone which also uses electricity in order to operate (749). Through the success of the telephone, Bell Telephone Company was established. In 1878, the light bulb was finally invented by Thomas Edison who lived from 1847 to 1931 (749). Off the principles of Faraday’s electric motor from 1821, Nicholas Tesla invented a more efficient and powerful electric motor in 1888 (749). To make these inventions be more significant, effort was expended to make better motors and transformers and to enhance the power needed to make them function. Through these inventions during the middle 19th century, it led to the capability of lighting homes and cities through the use of electricity, and it also led to the creation of the telephone communication system (750).
Humans these days take electricity for granted. We don’t truly understand what life was like without it. Most young adults will tell you their life does not depend on electricity, but they aren’t fooling anyone. They all know that their life depends on electricity; whether it’s television, their phone, Google, or the lights in their house. We need to stop taking those things for granted and give credit where credit is due. That is why I chose to write about the scientists who contributed to the discovery of electricity, which then helped modern scientists fuel the electricity phenomenons we now have today.

The effects of electricity control much of our daily lives. Many of our gadgets and everyday tasks are run by this wonderful source of power. For example without electricity we would not be able to make a cup of coffee in the mourning, or even make a long distance call to family or friends. There have been several technological breakthroughs by many brilliant people throughout history regarding electricity. It has come from being discovered as a small current to being transformed into useful power to run such things as computers. Ben Franklin, Guglielmo Marconi, Thomas Edison, Paul Nipkow, and Charles Babbage have all contributed to the advancement of electricity, and all of their advancements have supplied society in many ways.
