The introduction of the internet in the 1990s, comprising near-instant messaging solutions (email), instant messaging solutions (IM) and the World Wide Web, changed the nature of both commercial and social interactions. The invention of Web 2.0 (McAfee 2006) technology, which allows for two way method of communi-cation, interoperability and user generated contents (UGC), has enabled enterprises to create virtual communities and a collaborative environment to host web-based communities as a foundation for value creation. Social networking sites (SNS), like Facebook, Google+ and Twitter, are just few examples; such sites provide space both for better collaboration and for a large amount of user generated content (Kaplan & Haenlein 2010), which empower the user to become the real owner of data and information. ‘Social networks in the workplace provide employees with new ways of interacting with their co-employees and offer a platform for infor-mation sharing’ (Leftheriotis & Giannakos 2014, p. ). Email has become a major tool for all business communication; and based on re-search, a significant amount of employee time is spent on organising and managing emails. Due to an increasing level of using email within the workplace, a substantial amount of company knowledge is stored inside individual email accounts and in-boxes that are not easily shareable with and accessible to other employees. This is an expected outcome, as employees get paid to produce rather than to browse the information (McAfee 2006), hence they use channels and mediums that allow them to generate new information – such as email. We are using current technology acceptance models, e.g. (TAM) (Davis 1989), and factors that impact the continuous technology usage, e.g. technology continuance theory (TCT) (Liao, Palvia et al. 2009), as well as other relevant theories to evaluate and identify a construct that can be used by enterprises to accelerate initial adoption, acceptance and continuous usage of such technology
Social networking is a concept that has been around for a long time than the Internet. People have always been able to work together in a team. Social networking has come to users using the internet to communicate in various different ways. This focuses on creating a ground for social networking and collaboration. Social networking is about everyone in the society where it has become self-sustaining and created further growth leading to human social interaction. A social networking site has allowed users to post their profiles and create personal details for exchanging information with other users (Weaver and Morrison, 2008) [1]. In early stages, social networks have become the most frequently used tools. “Facebook is currently the largest online social network. Its business model is based on the analysis of user data to display customized advertisements. However, the data collection induces possible privacy concerns which oppose perceived benefits. Numerous eminent technologies are developed by firms and industries to gain competitive advantage in the market. The mode of lifestyle of individuals was also affected by technologies, either in social or occupational. Social media are one of the technologies which were invented and became contemporary prevalent. The origin of social media came from the “Usernet” inaugurated by Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis of the Duke University in 1979. It was “a worldwide discussion system that allowed internet users to post public messages” (Kaplan and Haenlein, 2010: 60). There are slow adoption rates for internal corporate social networks for many reasons. Although management and organization plays a role, the technology factor is the main reasons why employees are refusing to use these internal networks. With the rate at which technology is becoming more and more advanced, social networking systems are constantly updating their software and user interface (Laudon & Laudon, 2013). This mean that employees who are used to traditional forms of networking such as email, have to take the time to learn new systems and keep up with more social networking than they would like. In the eyes of the employee, using traditional forms of networking is simply more efficient. In order to make these internal social networking programs work, companies need to make more user friendly and easily manageable sites (Altman, 2015). Management also plays a part in the slow adoption rates. Managers need to provide more incentive for employees to use these networks aside from basic social interaction. For example, instead of sending memo’s via email, or other traditional forms of communication, slowly veer employees to seek memos on the company’s social networking site. Making strides like this will give employees more incentive to at least use the sites more often and participate in discussions and posts related to the business. One business guideline employees should adhere to limits the number of non-work related e-mail sent and received while at work. Today, many employees receive an overwhelming number of e-mails which can cause e-mail overload. Ingham (2003) explained that “E-mail overload occurs when the number of e-mails being sent and received becomes too difficult to manage, overwhelming the user” (p.166). Due to the speed and low overhead of e-mail communications, e-mailing has become the preferred method of communication for most businesses. Most work-related e-mails are short business-related notes, memos, and reminders to and from coworkers which are easily managed. However, when employees start e-mailing coworkers personal notes they can distract from their coworkers work at hand. Personal employee e-mails are time-consuming to respond to and read. Many employees also share humorous and chain e-mails with coworkers. Humorous and chain e-mails only add to the number of e-mails in an employees’ inbox. Beyond business-related e-mails, employees receive e-mails from friends and family. These personal matters also distract an employee from work related matters. Employees who use their work e-mail addresses for personal matters also often receive unsolicited spam mail. To avoid e-mail overload, employees should strive to minimize the number of personal e-mails they compose and accept at their work address. By limiting themselves to work related matters employees can avoid e-mail overload and be more productive with their work time.
A misconception that many have, though, is that the Internet is the World Wide Web. These are different things. The web is what most people think of as the internet – social media, video sharing, and forums. The internet is the combined network of networks of networks in the World. The web is home to all websites, whereas the internet is home to all networks. Regardless of people’s misunderstanding of what the internet is, the World Wide Web would not have been possible without it.
